5.0 out of 5 starsGood as I remember but a lot more annoying as an adult
Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2019
Read these books a few years ago when I was a teenager and loved them. Rereading them now because I remember how much I liked them and just felt like reading them again. Although I still like the plot and most of the characters and the storyline; this time I have a more than slight twinge of annoyance when I read the dialogue and the over explanation thought process the characters go through. The dialogue is cheesy, super corny and too simplified. It’s like okay i get it I’m not an idiot. And anything that has to do with sex is seen as a nasty or slutty thing to do which is only shaming any teens reading this. The writer acts as if the reader isn’t mature enough or smart enough to follow her storyline. So that’s annoying.

I have loved the House of Night series. I’m sure that obvious since I keep moving on to the next book. What I struggle with though is the retelling at the beginning of the book. These books aren’t stand alones so I’m not sure why I waist the first couple chapters on having to catch up on something I’ve already read. It makes for a super slow start that struggles to keep my interest.

However, after that, love it!!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Best Part was the Angst

Spoilers

Zoey Redbird is the supreme Mary Sue in a land of Mary Sues. And this book has a lot of Mary Sues. She has a Mary Sue grandma, a Mary Sue potential boyfriend, a Mary Sue best friend, and a Mary Sue cat.

Untamed is so far the best book in the HON series, and no, that's not necessarily a compliment, considering the other three are god-awful, especially Chosen. It's only the best because something happens for a change, other than Zoey making out with boys (but don't worry, that does happen).

Untamed also introduces boyfriend number 4, Stark, who is, if my teenage memory serves me correctly, best boy. He's introduced at the beginning of the novel as a transfer from a different house of night, who had been specifically recruited. That, obviously, means he gonna die. Which he does, in a gloriously bloody, tragic, and angsty way. Of course, I loved watching him die, because reading about main character kissing him as he coughs up blood is just the level of depraved angst that fuels me. So, I did enjoy that bit. What I didn't enjoy about Stark's introduction, is that it literally happens mere hours before he chokes and dies on his own blood. Like, he hasn't even been at the House of Night a single day. In YA land, that is enough, though, for Zoey to hear his tragic backstory about his special Mary Sue archery ability that killed his mentor on accident, and instantly fall in love with him because he's so cool and broody.

The angst doesn't stop there, though, and perhaps Zoey's promiscuous or in her own words "hoish" nature does provide me with entertainment because I find reading about her many boyfriend's suffering to be pretty delicious. Even if it did lead to a very awkward and inappropriate scene with boyfriend number 1, Erik, and Zoey performing an impromptu Shakespeare reading in the drama class that he is now teaching (because drama, of course). The reading of Othello goes off the rails, leading to Professor Erik making with his student in front of his entire class, while choking her out, and them both getting off from it. It's honestly gross even if the angst was tasty. Also the class applauded as if they didn't just watch a fireable offense (if the house of night cared to protect their students). Meanwhile, Erik is still pretty pissed about that whole Zoey cheating on him with the poetry professor (now deceased), leading me to think that Zoey has an authority kink as well as a choking kink.

But we have to check in on boyfriend number 2, Heath, before getting on with the plot (just like the novel itself). Heath is also still mad at the whole Zoey for the cheating on him with the poetry professor thing because it caused him an immense amount of physical pain when she broke their imprint by feeding on Prof Predator. He lets her know that she hurt him which prompts Aphrodite (who is still the best character) to threaten to kill him, despite the fact that Zoey is the one in the wrong (which is par for the course with her. Someone is always bound to defend and enable Zoey's wrongdoing even when she (and in turn the novel) recognize them as bad, there always has to be a detraction from the fact that she could ever commit a wrong). Heath not forgiving her (in this book, because you know he will down the road) is the only consequence Zoey even faces from her poor decision making.

Finally, getting onto the big plot, Untamed had the first REAL climax of the series (and I'm not talking about Zoey and Erik during their Othello scene). Leading up to one of Aprodite's prophecies becoming true and Vampire Satan being raised from his earthly prison by Neferet and the now once again alive Stark and his amazing Mary Sue skills. Also Vampire Satan is really hot. It's important that you know that, I think, because Zoey literally pauses in their escape to tell us that. So now bird-men are slaughtering people but that doesn't matter because Zoey is a very special Mary Sue and this is all apart of her Mary Sue journey.

Wow! Just - wow! In this segment of the storyline we find Zoey becoming even more powerful and thankfully smarter than she has been in the past. It’s clearer to her that her circle of friends is part of her power and keeping them in the loop, instead of out, is not only important to her success - it’s a vital part of what makes them so strong!! I’m also happy to see she’s finally starting to makes amends with the still living men in her life that she hurt. I can’t wait to see where this storyline goes from here. Now that the worst has happened and true evil has been released, what will our little band of friends do to battle it and take back their school and save their town? This series is magnificent and I highly recommend reading it!!

I usually hate audio books, but because I have to drive a lot I thought I'd give it a try. I have already read this series twice, and still love it. I dont like that the audio voice changed though, this voice is too young sounding and a little annoying. She just doesn't do it as well as the last one. I couldn't even finish listening to this book and to top it off you have to pay extra for the audio. Money wasted this go round! Very disappointed

I love the series so far. I think the authors are talented storyteller’s but things start getting a bit redundant. I just finished book 4 and the meaning of “Uh-we-tsi-a-ge-ya” is still repeated almost every time it is mentioned. It’s the small details that seem to stand out the most. I wish there were more more words to be used for painting the scene and less words that simply describe other words. If I need definitions I can get a dictionary or google it. Also there is a huge misprint in book 4. It seems there is an entire page missing and a duplicate page in its place. Hope nothing important happens there.

This series up to this point has only improved. The evolution of the characters is really great and the "nerd herd" are really coming into their own and filling the big shoes that Nyx has gifted each if the characters with. I have stated in a previous book review that the repetitiveness of events was a bit exhausting and annoying but this book really cut down on all that and I'm appreciative of that. This book ended on a big cliff hanger and I can't wait to find out what happens next. Zoey and the gang WILL PREVAIL!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good entry but still isn't great....

I'm still waiting for one of these books to just blow me away. All of the books so far (with the exception of book 3) have been quite good. I'm waiting for one of them to be great.

This book takes off right after Chosen left off. All of Zoey's friends are mad at her and she has no boyfriend. A few days ago she had 3. I really like that the authors didn't make this a cake walk for Zoey. She kept secrets from her friends, she's paying the price. She fooled around with all of her boyfriends and again, she's paying the price. I really feel that Zoey's character has grown leaps and bounds in this book. She's realizing how much power she really has and she's starting to grow up. She's also starting to have confidence in the decisions she makes knowing that they affect the people closest to her.

One thing I'm really suprised about is how much I'm loving Aphrodite's character. I think she's my favorite in the series right now. She's hanging on to the sarcasim but she's letting people into her life and really starting to be a friend and a rock for Zoey. Kind of a reality check when Zoey needs it. LOVE IT!

I still think this is a really good series, but I'd love for there to be a standout book and there hasn't been yet. I still think the series is worth reading but only if you read it in order. If you don't you could get lost.

I must say that this book was definitely much more enjoyable then the last one! It was really exciting and I am looking forward to starting the next one. I enjoyed it so much that I stayed up until 4:30 in the am to finish reading it. It was nothing like the last one and really dove into what the series is about. Z and her faithful friends are going to once again take on evil and hopefully save the world. I am hoping the rest of the series focuses on the important aspects that were brought up during this book, like family, friends, faith and of course some love. (not dating 3 guys at once but true love) Overall this book was excellent (minus a few typos and spelling errors which were easily overlooked). I gave it 4 stars because there were quite a few spelling errors but no one is perfect. =) Definitely give it a try, especially if you were disappointed by the 3rd book but loved the other two, this one is much better and will make you fall in love with series again.

Addicted to the series. Always a good read. I love me some supernatural. I do like the author's style of writing, which feels natural and compatible to the way we talk and think. Good character development. Love the fact that the author references modern icons, movies and events. Story lines are interesting and filled with drama and edge of your seat excitement and anticipation. I do love to hate the villain and this one is evil. Only negatives are ones that waste good story space and time, such as, the repetitive descriptions of past events and characteristics of people and then the romantic events or inner insecurity issues can definitely use some editing as it can, in places, be blah blah blah....tedious and over descriptive for what is needed. I usually just skip over these sections and get back to what's really happening with the story. There are also some typos here and there that bug me on rare occasion because I wish I could just fix them myself! Oh, and though the length of these books are typical, I would love if some authors would just make books that are seriously think again, like 500 pages or more! Other than that. I highly recommend this series. You won't regret it.
