It's my favorite book. I love this book because at the time when I first read this to my kids their grandmother/my mother had just died. It also reminded me of my grandmother. I love the author Tomie de Paola. He is my favorite children's book writer. I was invited to my godson's baby shower and we were asked to bring a book so I bought this one.
This was one of my favorite stories growing up, and I just couldn't resist buying it for my son, who does have his own version of Nana Upstairs/Nana Downstairs. It was awesome to see the book redone in full-color (when I was growing up the author only had a black and white and a muted three-color illustration). I can't wait to sit and read this to him over and over again!
I sent as a gift to my niece who became a mother. I read to my children and could related to the grandmother/grandchild relationship and how to deal with their passing from this life. My niece loved the reference to my mother and her grandmother.
This is a really good book. Its not super entertaining though, but the topic is a difficult one, so that is expected. I'd like to read this more now and then or if the issue of dying or death, especially of a family member, comes up with the daughter. She's now 4 so its not something we talk about a lot.
I have many of Tomie dePaola's books and they have been part of a great childhood for my kids. This one was special and different from the Strega books. It was touching and wonderful in its own unique way. Great if a child has someone passing away. Great perspective on fond memories.
