Upstairs Downstairs is such a great show. I love to watch this series over and over and over. The writing is superb, the costumes are done so well. Highly recommend.

Not formatted for US

In the seller's defense, they do a lot to try to warn buyers that this set won't play on most US players. Unfortunately for me, I didn't realize until I opened the box and saw the giant sticker on the DVDs as their final warning. The return was simple, but posting this review in the hopes others won't make the same needless mistake!

Does not work on all DVD players, no refund

Warning.. if you live in the United States, this will not work on your DVD player. My grandmother purchased this and she did not realize.. it's not clearly stated in the description to be careful of this. After doing some research we learned "media type PAL" cannot be played on our DVD players.

British Bummer

So bummed to find out this will only play on players set up for British movies. Return of it required immediacy and that the shrink wrap be intact. I would have loved to exchange it for an American one. Foiled again! Rats!

Classic series; will never lose its wonderful power to captivate.

The absolute best classic series with Jean Marsh, Pauline Collins,Gordon Jackson and all the star players. Nothing will ever compare to this upstairs / downstairs story of the interaction between the social classes in Edwardian England. Many contenders, but this one is always the five-star winner. It covered many controversial topics in style and kept me right on the edge of my seat for the next installment. The British TV series
masterpiece of all time!

A delightful redux

We just viewed all 5 seasons after first watching almost 40 years ago. Back then, we had so little exposure to authentic British everyday life and culture that it was very enlightening. But even more important, you can see dozens of examples where Julian Fellows lifted concepts, story lines, plot twists, and characters straight from this series to shape Downton Abbey. I can't fault him for that at all! Like the man said, "Only steal from the best!"

Upstairs/Downstairs - Complete First Season
Verified purchase
This British series is in a "class" by itself. It's characters are unforgettable, the acting inspired and the backdrop evocative - Edwardian England from 1904 into the 1930s. The story evolves around the aristocractic Bellamy family "Upstairs" and their servants "Downstairs," but it is not a soap opera. It is as genuine, real and honest as any period production, or for that matter, any production, that I have ever seen. The characters grapple with the same struggles that we continue to confront in mordern-day America: love, loss, coming of age, morality, prejudice, death, economics, social responsibility, freedom and the search for life's ultimate meaning - concluding with the horrendous effects of a World War and its devastating aftermath. This unflinching look at history as well as a truly timeless, engaging saga is not to be missed. I genuinely rejoice that such a remarkable treasure is finally available on DVD. Originally broadcast on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre.

as mentioned to you prior, the lack of Sub Title(SDH) did not grant an excellent rating for these CDs.
