Quality: Outstanding finish on all parts, paint, trim, fit, design. All metal parts have superb paint finish. All plastic parts and trim are without defect or residual molding splash. The drawer is fitted to ball bearing slider rails, which slides smoothly so there should never be any issues with the drawer seating or misalignments over time. All Fasteners and parts all go together with precision and are well manufactured.
Ease of Assembly: Excellent. The kit is extremely well packaged and organized. All the fasteners are well labeled. Instructions are clear, with excellent diagrams. The only fault I found was that the actual components are called out by label in the instructions but all the metal pieces lack labels to correspond, so you end up reviewing the instructions closely for parts where there two, but they are left/right (such as the slider rails for the drawer. But since the instructions and diagrams are very clear, this is really a very small issue. Took about 30 minutes to assemble and test/adjust for fit for my daughter.
Comfort and integrity of design: Outstanding. The chair is an extremely comfortable sculpted design that my daughter says is very comfortable. The ergonomics of the design is excellent. All the parts are extremely rugged and will last for years of the kind of day to day abuse that children can and will inflict on a product. Seriously, you will likely never see any age/wear related defects with this product... unless you manage to back over it with your car.
Adjustment range: Excellent. Both the chair and desk have clear and easy to read and understand adjustment indicators on each leg. While the desk is designed for ages 3-10 (per the manufacturer), in reality it is better in my view to describe it in terms of physical height of the child. I say this because this desk will work very well for body height ranges of 45" to 68". This is an excellent range of adjustment and insures that this well made desk will serve useful life in terms of several years.
Really.. this is almost the perfect product in terms of a children's desk. The only real design flaw in my view is that you adjust the height by pulling up on either the chair or desk and there are fixed click points for each setting. To reset it, you pull the height all the way past the top setting and then it will slide down and reset to the lowest setting. While this is an excellent way to do it, it does mean that if you child is lifting the chair to move it around, it may cause the height adjustment to move up to higher set points. This is a small oversight in the design, and is easily addressed by simply applying some clear packing tape on the inside wall of the chair legs once you have it set to the desired height, as this is sufficient to prevent any accidental changes to height setting on the chair. Since you won't change it more then once or twice a year as the child grows, it's a simple fix to manage.
The biggest issue I think buyers will have with this desk is that it will often be out of stock on Amazon. But maybe as it's popularity rises, there will be larger inventory. There were only 4 left in stock when I ordered, and they are now out of stock with no restock date. So I am extremely glad I ordered when it was in stock. That said, there are several similar versions and color choices being sold via Amazon, and the parts clearly look in the photos like they all originate from the same manufacturer, so given the quality and popularity, I'm sure there will be lots of choices in the future.
Pros:
1. Height adjustable (which ended up the main con) so our son could use the chair and desk at different heights. However, since we started at the shortest height (as would be expected) we didn't learn of the problems with the height adjustment until after we had the desk for a bit of time.
2. The drawer was a lot like his school drawer so he could keep stuff at his desk.
3. Easy to keep the top clean; chair also was easy to keep clean.
Cons:
1. The height adjustable mechanism is extremely fragile and will break. There is a plastic piece in the locking mechanism which fails, causing the chair/desk (they both use the same kind of mechanism) to either sit lopsided (if one side is still working) or sit at the lowest level (if they both fail, which they will). For someone NOT looking for height adjustability, this is a great chair and table. However, we were sold on it *because* of the height adjustability, and that was the part that failed almost as soon as we tried to use it.
2. The drawer is a bit flimsy.
3. The edges of the desk top do not stick out that far. We bought a lamp that was "often purchased together", and although the lamp is absolutely wonderful (we still use it all the time), it barely grabbed onto the edge of the desk. An extra inch or 2 cm would have made it much easier to clamp on accessories like lamps.
4. Threads are not high quality in the fittings. The screws are great, the fittings not so much, so it's hard to get the screw started and doesn't feel smooth as you tighten. As a mechanic I appreciate good quality threads, and the threaded female parts (inside the legs/frame) are poor quality. I could see people stripping threads as they assembled the desk/chair, preventing service in the future.
We never tried to warranty or otherwise get the desk (failed first) or chair (failed second) replaced. Technically we were out of warranty only a couple weeks after we ordered the set, and we didn't use the height adjutability feature until the next year. By then it was too late to warranty it. But, even if they warrantied it, it seemed like a tremendous waste because the internals are the issue, not the welded steel frame, and it would fail the same way again. I'd much rather be able to repair it and keep using it.
Probably better to get a more durable, non-adjustable desk and chair.
The first of two pictures is from August 2020. That was the first time we tried to adjust the height, in prepartion for the 2020 school year, and it failed. That's the brighter picture with all the tools and such. I repaired the broken piece - there is a soft plastic pin that anchors a spring, and the pin breaks becasuse it's soft plastic, not metal. When that happens the locking mechanism for the height adjustment stops working. All those reviews of the chair not holding the desired height? It's probably the pin breaking, letting the spring go, and disabling the locking mechanism. I replaced the pin with a section of stainless steel rod (I cut up a high end bike spoke - it was the same diameter, about 2mm), so now the pin was anchored to a strong metal piece. That would be a better design, to have a stainless rod stuck through the plastic piece, and the repair is a permanent fix (at least for the pin). It does not address other parts/issues.
The second picture is from May 2022. The chair finally failed beyond repair - both sides broke, one side first, then the other. When I started to disassemble the chair (and heard the rattling of broken pieces inside of it), I expected something similar, a pin let go. Instead it was a basic bushing that let go, breaking into multiple pieces. I decided to stop trying to save the chair at this point.
I included a picture with my son at the desk, to give you an idea of his size/shape. My son started using this desk when he was between 45 and 50 lbs - just below 50th percentile in terms of his weight for his height. He is now 72 lbs, 50th percentile. Skinny as a rail.
Overall it's a great chair/table at the lowest height. DO NOT expect it to work once you need to raise it up.
