About the Author

Laura Resnick was born in Chicago, and when she was a teenager her family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Growing up in a family of writers, daughter of SF writer Mike Resnick, she never thought she would end up in a writing career, herself. A cum laude graduate of Georgetown University, where she studied languages and linguistics. Laura can speak French and Italian. After college, she moved overseas for a few years, where she studed acting at London Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. The only thing that disappoints me about this book is that now I have only one more Esther novel to read that's been published to date. Woe!

This was an excellent book. It has a lot more of Esther's acting experiences in it, and I thought it was fun to get a glimpse of that part of her life. The basic plotting was well-paced; I called a couple of the plot twists but not all of them (which makes me happy both ways), and some of the scenes were literally laugh-out-loud funny- like the depiction of a really FAILED performance, and a real vamp going on a rant in a wanna-be vamp club and getting told to be more tolerant because "everyone can be a vamp in their own way".

The vamps were... not tedious, and I generally find vamps tedious almost by definition at this point. The author has an interesting and coherent take on them that works well and is less stupid than most.

Well-drawn characters, too! Her co-workers in the play were nicely written and seemed very real (even when absurd). I am finding the mostly-off romance to be getting a bit tedious; I think Lopez needs a good kick. I LOVED learning about Max's "thing" about Lithuanians.

This is probably not the best book to start with, although I think it stands alone OK. However, if you start here, you'll miss a lot that the previous books brought to the series and the characters. Start with "Disappearing Nightly" or "Doppelgansters".

I also have to give a good thumbs-up to the cover artists- these are GREAT covers.

Another fun Esther Diamond

Laura Resnick definitely has her stride now in the urban fantasy genre. This time around, not only do we get the real scoop on what a vampire is, but it is non-stop action mixed with a whole lot of craziness and Lopez trying to get back in Esther's good graces, not knowing how afraid Esther is that she's going to get Lopez killed. This particular story is filled with as much excellent research as in Resnick's other books and really gives a good look at where and when things vampire got started. When Esther finds herself in a good part high profile, if kitschy play opposite a cult favorite D-list star playing to full houses, she doesn't expect to be attacked by the star's fans. When one turns up dead the morning after giving Esther a black eye, having been escorted from the scene by the show's star, things go down hill. Lopez shows up to warn Esther when "exsanguinated" bodies start turning up with the show's star as the prime suspect, but nothing goes right except Esther finds she still cares for Lopez. The unexpected ending was a real treat. I'm looking forward to the next Esther Diamond book!

Its my go to series during hard times, and between others. This particular book made it harder than ever to put down. It answers so many questions, and has a refreshing take on some old tropes. And as always the characters we have come to love, continue their quirky ways bringing laughter to the story.

This was good. The mystery was an intriguing one, the new characters/suspects were immensely entertaining, the laughs were great, and the world-building was clever.
My sole point of contention was Max's absence for most of the first half.
Anyone who likes Laura Resnick, or Urban fantasy in general should check this book out.

Esther Diamond is at it again, accidentally confronting Evil while trying to balance her acting career and trying NOT to think of her non-existant love life. She has a main female role of a gothic play THE VAMPYRE, but dealing with an obnoxous female dressing roomie, a manic-depressive stage manager, tabloid reporters, and the lead actor claiming to be a vamipre can drive anyone crazy. Not to mention that he agent has not even come to watch her perform. But when a female fan of Daemon (who attacks her thinking she can get to the actor) ends up dead, he is the head of the suspect list and her ex-almost boyfriend Detective Lopez thinks that she may be on the killers list. Consulting with her friend Max (350 years old), she learns a lot of the vampire race and the reason why he asks if people are from Lithuania (a great story in itself). Can she locate the actual vampire and stop him (since vampires can only be male) before she herself ends up the blue plate special?

This book has everything you expect from Esther and company. The author really brings Max, Lopez and Esther to life. I enjoyed the backstory of Max's life, and also enjoyed seeing Esther's agent Thack for the first time as a major character (to which I will not spoil several surprises he brings, to which he compares some of his life to Esther's). This book will keep you glued until you are finished with it and can not wait for the next one, Polterheist.

PS. I do hope she brings Lucky and Puma back, they are such interesting characters. Later.

I really enjoyed this book. We read it for our book club and I wasn't sure what to expect but I found myself reading late into the night because I couldn't put it down. The main character is refreshingly real, strong with an interesting career as a stage actress. Some of her co-workers are crazy, something we can all identify with. Her hot ex-almost-boyfriend kinda smolders off the page. Yum. And best of all, I laughed-out-loud quite a few times. I'll definitely go back and read Laura Resnick's other books in the series.

If you liked the other books in the series you'll probably like this one as well. For me, the action took a little long to get started: Max and Nelli don't even make an appearance until Chapter 11 and Lopez isn't much of a presence in the book. At least the author has a refreshing take on Vampires and we finally get to know about makes and Lithuanians. A fun read once but I don't see myself picking up again (although I will be looking for the sequels to see what happens from here.

Laura Resnick is back with her fourth Esther Diamond mystery. The urban fantasy plot is strong and original, and has at its heart Esther's new off-Broadway gig in 'The Vampyre'. One of this series' strengths is its sense of place. Here 'The Big Apple' is back with some new locations mixed in with familar ones. The characters are likewise well-blended: with all the old favourites and some vibrant new ones. 'Vamparazzi' is a page-turner, pacy and interesting despite the somewhat predictable plot points. The story is dialogue-driven, with quick and witty repartee. Unlike 'Unsympathetic Magic', this is more Com than Rom, with a stagnant relationship between Esther and Lopez. If you're a fan of the series, or an urban fantasy fan who loves to laugh-out-loud, then buy this book.
