1.0 out of 5 starsNONSENSE. PURELY FANTASTICAL CRAP.
A MODERN STORY CENTERED AROUND A CHARACTER WITH A COMPLETELY 21ST CENTURY ATTITUDE, MANNER AND TONGUE; UNDERMINES THE VERY CONCEPT OF THE PREMISE IN THE FIRST PLACE. DRESSED UP IN 19TH CENTURY COSTUME AND RIDING AROUND IN A CARRIAGE WITH SOME POSH ACCENT DOES LITTLE TO SUFFICIENTLY DISTRACT FROM THE GLARING INSULT TO ONE'S INTELLIGENCE THAT IS UNFOLDING ON THE SCREEN IN FRONT OF YOU. WHOEVER DIRECTED THE PROJECT SHOULD BE FIRED AND NEVER PERMITTED NEAR THIS PERIOD AGAIN. TRULY, THE ENTIRE PROJECT LEADERSHIP MUST BE AWASH IN IGNORANCE PERHAPS SECRETLY HOPING THE AUDIENCE WAS AS PRECISELY DETACHED FROM REALITY AND DELUSIONAL AS THEY APPARENTLY ARE. THIS INEPT FORAY INTO ADAPTATION OF VANITY FAIR'S RENDITION OF ONE YOUNG WOMAN'S ASPIRATIONS TO LIFE WITHIN THE RANKS OF 19TH CENTURY ARISTOCRACY, AND IN PARTICULAR THE ACTOR'S PORTRAYAL OF THE HEROINE, SERVES AS A "PRIME" EXAMPLE OF WHY SUCH ENDEAVORS SHOULD REMAIN IN EXPERIENCED HANDS; EQUALED ONLY IN FAILURE BY THE MORONS WHO WASTED PERFECTLY GOOD FUNDING GREEN-LIGHTING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS STORY FAILS IN BOTH SCREENWRITING AND CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT, IN FACT, ONE MIGHT WONDER IF THIS WAS MERELY AN EXERCISE IN [AMAZON'S] CORPORATE GOODWILL, THAT IS, A WAY TO MOVE MONEY OFF THE BOOKS.

5.0 out of 5 starsVanity Fair
I think that this is a great reimagining of this story, when watching the satire is very well balanced with the drama of the series. Olivia Cooke did a fantastic job as Becky Sharpe. All of the characters best fit their perspective roles and felt the social commentary about the time this historical piece is placed in was well placed in both the historical and satire aspects of the show. The small looks that Olivia Cook makes to the camera really add a new and creative touch to the piece and I really love that choice that was made. I feel that from the beginning it was very different to its previous adaptions, but in the best way possible. I think that this is the best version of Vanity Fair out there would recommend to anyone who wants a great show with a great pay off in the end.

5.0 out of 5 starsHighly accessible and packed with Britain's best talent.
This adaptation is highly accessible to a modern audience (if period dramas give you pause) and is packed with some of Britain's absolute best, rising and veteran talent - Olivia Cooke, Claudia Jessie, Johnny Flynn, Martin Clunes, Frances de la Tour, Felicity Montagu, Sally Phillips, Mathew Baynton - any of whom I'd watch for their performance alone (Ms. Cooke and Ms. Jessie I expect will have long and highly accomplished careers). And the multi-talented Johnny Flynn, forget about it. He's so great in this (don't miss him singing the theme song of "The Detectorists" in series 1 episode 3). These are the best of the best presenting what in my opinion is the best adaptation to date of a brilliant satirical novel.

2.0 out of 5 starsDreadful
Someone decided to make this palatable to those who wouldn't ordinarily watch this kind of thing and absolutely ruined it in the process.

The music's nice but it doesn't add anything to this story, it detracts.

Read the book or the audiobook. This is not Vanity Fair. You won't begin to understand the story watching this modern day woman glommed onto a past she wouldn't have ever existed in.

Beyond that it has a really cheap look about it. Even settings that have appeared in other films and that looked sumptuous here look like they must have been lit by an amateur and shot on substandard high definition video.

Everyone here, including its star, deserved better than the producers or powers that be allowed.

Just translate the story to film and have it evocative of its era, not this mess with music and actions that simply aren't believable.

Only a simpleton could come away from this raving about it.

1.0 out of 5 starsliterary insult
Again, pulp made for the young who know longer read. Any period film that starts with pop music, in this case, "All Along the Watchtower," is a recipe for ludicrousness.
Boo to the writers and producers and boo to Amazon for not giving us authentic renditions.

1.0 out of 5 starsTrite, boring, lead actor over played, obvious and grating.
From the very first moment the acting is trite and heavy handed, stupid and shrill. Obviously meant to be funny or shocking it does neither. Casting is awful. Music is awful. Costumes are the only redeeming value. Such a big production with so much potential for societal statements which would transfer perfectly to current history. Everything is so overplayed and obvious and just boring and awful. Perhaps made for tweens and considers the audience stupid.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat series
Rebecca Sharp's character is so intriguing and keeps the viewer hanging from episode to episode to see how she weaves her way into the lives of others while gaining personal benefit. There is a little bit of Rebecca in all of us. The music, costumes, setting, etc. were fantastic. Loved it! A great British series to enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 starsWhat a tale, and so very well done here!
What a tale, and so well told here! Just when one finds oneself despising the protagonist for her latest action, she turns a most heartfelt kind deed. And everyone else in this cast of characters is almost as equally human: none are utterly one-sidedly wicked nor saintly.

Rather unlike those of Dickens or Austen, these characters are as complex and compelling as any portrayed in today's novels.

And this amazing production does them such justice: Lush, sublime cinematography, superb script, casting, acting, and beautiful period costume/sets...not to mention an abundance of gorgeous & majestic Freisian horses.

One of the best of many splendid Amazon Originals. I may even watch it again.
