Gorgeous, Dramatic, Suspenseful

The cover of Verity is just as gorgeous as the cover of Keturah was. If I knew nothing of the story, this factor would draw me in on its own. I really enjoyed Verity's story. Traveling back and forth between Nevis and America, spying, the dangers on Nevis, and Verity's romantic life all made for dramatic and suspenseful moments that were a contrast to the drama of the first book. Verity's story while filled with ups and downs, sorrows and joys, still remains upbeat through it all. Verity was a great character. While driven to find her own way, she didn't do so without regard for her sisters and the well being of those on the island as well as those she knew in America. I loved how smart, assertive, and astute she was in multiple situations but especially as a horsewoman, saleswoman, and a spy. Without giving too much away, I loved how Duncan's whereabouts where presented. It's kind of like a slap in the face when you read it, in a good way. Shocking but pulling you deeper into the story. After that, I loved how her feelings developed, grew, and deepened. The parts with Selah at the end of the book stood out to me as not as seamlessly woven into the story as the other bits. While they matched with what was going on, Selah's parts read as "well, I haven't talked about Selah a lot yet in this book but because the next book is about her I better establish some of her perspective so you have something to go on before starting the next book." Like I said, I didn't mind the parts, and they fit well into the story. They just stood out to me because at the end of the book we were hearing from Selah's perspective when we hadn't really at all in the rest of the book. It doesn't really seem like the plantation grew or became stable throughout this book. They are all still working hard to get to a place where they are more comfortable. This along with a few other plot points and the ending of this book made for a minor cliffhanger, if only because you want to see the sisters reunited and the plantation running smoothly. So while I really enjoyed this book, I won't feel like the story is fully completed until I read the next book.

I don't know what happened, but the author repeatedly used the word "clearly" so much, so that it showed up on nearly every page. Sometimes twice on the same page. It became annoying. I guess it wasn't edited. Other than that, a page turner, as Verity becomes entangled in the coming Revolution. I noticed years ago that with historical fiction/love stories, the heroine is always given a modern, aggressive, personality--in this case, 21st century. They never have the disposition of a woman in whatever century the story is based in. Do the author's assume they'll be boring? I don't know. But it gets tiresome. It's not believeable. Even their men allow these women to do whatever they want, since they are also 21st century men. Stlll, the book is entertaining. At the end, Selah seems to be falling for a dirt-poor preacher. Sigh. Seems to be a Banning curse for the girls to love near-penniless men. I also didn't like it that nothing was done (again) about Shubert. This is the 18th century; Gray should've stepped up in the first book and taken that guy out. Even in my grandpa's generation, if someone messed with a guys woman, they'd get killed over it. Justifyibly. But Gray is acting like a pacifist. Go figure. I suppose Shubert will get his come-uppance in the book named after Selah. Except for the part where the English officer plunges his hand down Verity's cleavage, the story is clean-cut, faith-based, and the charactors are Christians, who pray and encourage one another as they go through trying times. The background research is evident, but it wasn't till almost the very end that I figured out what "stays" are. The subject of slaves was well done, but since the main charactors reacted with 21st century sensibilities, it made me wonder how English ladies of the period would've treated them. Well, it's "clearly" a good book, and I look forward to reading how Selah will fare.

I took Verity on a trip to Israel with me to read on the plane, but as with all of Lisa's books, it was really hard to put it down once I got started! Verity has such a fun and independent spirit, as does McKintrick, which makes for a riveting and energetic storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I loved the opportunity to take a peek into the hearts of the early revolutionaries of America and their struggle to decide where their loyalties would lie. When one thinks about the American Revolution, it is not often considered how difficult and heartbreaking cutting ties with England would have been for many who had grown up under the crown. Yet, in this story, not only are those feelings explored, but they are also followed through with the reasonings why those who struggled chose to leap into action and bring about change. Looking forward to see where Selah will take us next!
