About the Author

Born in the United States, Eric Carle was taken as a six-year-old child by his parents back to their native country, Germany. Later, he studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Applied Arts) in Stuttgart, and returned to New York in his early twenties as a graphic designer and artist. His many picture books are now known and loved by children around the world.

In 2002, Eric and his late wife, Barbara, opened The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, in Amherst, Massachusetts, where the works of distinguished picture book artists, nationally and internationally acclaimed, are exhibited in three spacious galleries.

Eric Carle passed away in 2021, at the age of 91.

Amazon.com Review

A cricket is born who cannot talk! A bigger cricket welcomes him to the world, then a locust, a cicada, and many other insects, but each time the tiny cricket rubs his wings together in vain: no sound emerges. In the end, however, he meets another quiet cricket, and manages to find his "voice." Children will love the repetitive text as they meet a steady parade of new creatures (including a "spittlebug, slurping in a sea of froth"); and of course they'll delight in the happy ending. This is one of a series of large (11.5 by 8.5 inches) format Eric Carle books with a mechanical twist: in this case, the quiet cricket bursts into (surprisingly authentic) electronic song as you turn the last page. (The battery is replaceable.) An amusement for the ears, but most of all--as ever, with Carle--a feast for the eyes. The colorful cut-paper illustrations are simply gorgeous, drawing you in even on the hundredth reading. (And there will be a hundredth reading, followed by many more.) (Baby to preschool) --Richard Farr --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Eric Carle is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for very young children. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has eaten its way into the hearts of literally millions of children all over the world and has been translated into more than 62 languages and sold over 41 million copies. Since the Caterpillar was published in 1969, Eric Carle has illustrated more than 70 books, many best sellers, most of which he also wrote.

Carle says: "With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? There are new people, a teacher, classmates - will they be friendly? I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown. The unknown often brings fear with it. In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun."

Eric Carle has two grown-up children, a son and a daughter. He divides his time between the Florida Keys and the hills of North Carolina.

2.0 out of 5 stars Corroded batteries
By Rachel C on February 25, 2021
My son loves this book. We got a hand-me-down version that was missing the cover and the beginning... so I decided to surprise him only to discover that as many other reviewers reported, the batteries are dead. Thankfully I had recently replaced the batteries in his old tattered copy so I pulled those and cleaned the contacts in the new book the best I could and now it works. Happy it works, sad that I paid so much for a book that didn't work upon delivery. It is cheaper than the cover price, but if you order, be prepared to replace the batteries.

Editing to note that after the book was opened a couple of times, the little tab that makes the book make sound, broke and now that doesn't even work. Returning and hoping for a better copy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hazard! Button Battery
By Sheepsrkool on September 2, 2021
I was shocked to see that this board book contains a button battery! These are extremely dangerous for small children, and can kill if swallowed in just a few hours. These should not be in children’s toys or books. Do not buy!

By Carla on September 12, 2020
My daughter loves this book. The pages are a little thick. She loves the story. Sounds like a cricket at the end of the book.
