Note: This book is split ~66% Talker and ~34% bonus story about events leading to The Ruin. Both are well written, although they fly by due to their relative shortness compared to the earlier entries in the series. I chuckled at Tanner’s feedback on Talker’s journal. The epilogue contains the most brutal scenes of Talker’s journal thus far, and it was a well executed twist (of both the plot and the knife planted in my gut when I caught the hint in the final chapter). The bonus story was honestly chilling in both the specific experiences described (especially the 787 scenes) and when one considers the possibilities of what could have been. I am sure the bonus story has plenty of reread Easter eggs that will only be made evident as more of both stories are told. I look forward to future books continuing both storylines. Unsolicited advice: I also personally recommend finding something to lift your spirits (like cold brew coffee with magic sugar) after reading as I am writing this review ~8 hours after finishing and I’m still feeling that stab wound

Precision applications of violence and firepower against magic and hand weapons abound throughout as our favorite Rangers get into the nitty gritty of cleansing their part of the Ruin of monsters. These masters of mayhem continue this saga of survival in The Ruin. As I said in my review of the first book, "The best way I can describe it is a base of Tolkein, a sprig of Dragonlance, a strong essence of DnD, finished with a perfect topping of Clancy or Kratman." The Ruined Earth looks a lot like the latter half of the First Age of Middle Earth when Melkor had all but triumphed, and the situations of Elves and Men were, to put it mildly, dire.
But this is the Ruined Earth and the Maiar are not coming.
Instead they got Rangers from the unRuined world ten thousand years ago, and their magic forge that keeps them stocked with weapons, ammo, and other toys.

I don't think there are any spoilers, but, just in case: Spoiler Alert.

Sruf the Cruel is a huge ancient green dragon from the stars, He's possibly older than the human race. He's toppled the most powerful civilization on the Ruined Earth, the Dragon Elves, and sat for centuries, gloating, on the enormous hoard stolen from their ancient city of Tarragon. He's surrounded by thousands of slaves and minions ready to fight and die for him. The lands around Sruf bear him tribute to turn away his wrath.
Sruf was always on the Ranger's 'To-Do List' but he just PO'd them. So now the Rangers have bumped him to the top, and so this is the story of the Doom that came for Sruf the Cruel.
As a bonus there are vignettes from the fall of the pre-Ruin World.

The 3rd book in the series best described as Blackhawk Down meets Dungeons and Dragons. Our story focuses on the language specialist in a Ranger regiment. Finding themselves far in the future in a ruined earth taken over by forces and monsters of darkness with true humans an endangered species almost lost to evil. This book centers around the battle with a green dragon and it’s minions in the ruins of a once great city of elves. The main story of how the plan and battle came and went take up 2/3rds of the book with a prequel store covering the early transition of modern society falling to an engineered plague that lead to the fall of the world. Told through several first person accounts to give the reader a little idea of what the fall and transition might have been like. I can’t wait for the next book. Lots of places to go, lots of unanswered questions. Rich characters and fun military tactics and technical aspects applied to Tolkien’s world. Gripping fun.

I do enjoy a good story, especially if told in a different way. There was action everywhere they went; & real coffee from Portugon.

Talker was growing in psionics as he battled the Evil along with his "brothers", (& he thought they'd never accept him) Captain Knife Hand, Chief Rapp & the Sargeant Major; Last of Autumn, & the Lost Boys along for the killing. A complicated story laid out with humor & decisive action, this was an exciting read.

An then came the Epilogue.

I’m really enjoying this series. The mix of fantasy and military fiction is done very well. In the first book, I felt it jumped around a bit too much, making things hard to follow. I had to chuckle in this one when the main character admits he jumps around too much.
I also liked the parts after the main story, where the beginning of the Ruin is depicted. I couldn’t help but to wonder… wouldn’t it be cool if this somehow tied into the Galaxy’s Edge series? The start of the Ruin was similar to when “early days” part of GE. I’m not sure how a story would work there, but I’d have fun reading it!

More of what I've come to expect, the Rangers are becoming better established and adapted to the new world compared to previous books, and thats not even considering the changes happening to some of them.

Subtracted 1 star because of length, and because I suspect the punch in the gut at the end was an attempt to write a character out of the story (who had very little time in this book despite having their whole arc hinting to this confrontation), but we'll see in book 4.
