There's the H & h w/an usual connection & contrary to other reviewers, there is some MINOR heat which can easily be skipped over if offensive but does add the right amount of spice to the story. The ending was absolutely perfect w/a curve ball I never saw coming.
If you're looking for a light mystery w/lots of humor & a h who always seems to be in the center of trouble w/just a dash of heat.... you'll truly enjoy this story.
The author has a real knack for taking what are actually quite horrible events (there are several murders) and turning them into a fairly light, entertaining, and kind of quirky book. The story mores along quite briskly. The plot is unique. The romance is fun. Just a warning... There are a couple of explicit romantic scenes, so it's not for kids.
My small quibble is that it is obviously a rerelease of a book written a few years ago and needs some updating. There are gay side characters and that part of the story is handled quite clumsily by today's standards. At one point our hero refers to one of the men who is hiding his sexuality as "a real flamer". What the heck??? A little updating is definitely in order.
All in all, I enjoyed the story. Stephanie Bond is one of my go-to authors when I need a little light reading inbetween more serious books. Her publisher dropped the series after this book, but she says she will continue it now that she's self-publishing. I hope so. It's a fun series.
While I enjoyed the main story line, I'm not one to read explicitly sexual scenes, so had to skim past these twice - If I had known they were there, I wouldn't have started the book. But the story was captivating enough that I wanted to see how it would end, sans sex.
"Voodoo or Die" is the second book of the Mojo (Voodoo) series. The first book is "In Deep Voodoo". I do recommend reading the series in order if you are a picky person, like myself. I enjoy knowing all the dirt from the past. :) However, this book is fine as a stand alone book.
Language and Sex:
There were no swear words or sex scenes for those who prefer to avoid it.
Gloria Dalton is an attorney and has just moved to Mojo. She took over Deke Black's law practice. On her first day at the law office, a beautifully wrapped gift box is left outside the door. Inside is a voodoo doll. Her paralegal, Steve Chasen drives his car right into her glass plated office door. Now the murder mystery begins. Next in line is the person from Gloria's past. And this is her first day in town.
Many of the great characters from the first book return for "Voodoo or Die". I really enjoyed Gloria and Zane's relationship but don't want to spoil the plot by giving details. There is a really nice surprise at the end of the books for a special person that was such a bonus for me. I love to see all of the threads of a plot tied up neatly by the end of the book. There is a great deal of humor and fun in the characters and are typical of what you see in a small town.
I had no issues with any editing mistakes. This is a fast and fun read, relaxing and perfect for taking a break from stress. I ordered more books by this author after reading this series.
Much like Penny, Gloria did some pretty foolish things that made me wonder if she was trying to get herself killed. She had all these years of witness protection training that seemed to melt away when she saw Zane again and she couldn't seem to make rational decisions for the sake of her own safety. This was a great follow up though with more mystery, humor, romance and a cool black cat. In the end, I just wish more had been explained about the voodoo dolls and the mystery that was Mona Black. I didn't feel I got good closure on either of those things. Maybe it is just me. As I said in my review of the first book, wish there was a third! These were my favorites from Stephanie Bond so far and I will read more of her books.

I preferred this one to the first in the series. Gloria's tale was a really interesting one. Plus I "know" all the townspeople now.
Again, there were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and lines in among the murder and mayhem, a style I really enjoy.
There were a few errors-like affects used instead of effects and born instead of borne but that was all so that was an improvement for me too. I do hope she'll reconsider and return to Mojo and its people !!
So I really wanted to like this story, the premise seemed to be fun, but no matter how hard i tried i just could not enjoy this book. The plot and characters are so contrived and stupid that it takes away the enjoyment of the book.
I am aware when reading this type of lit you need to suspend a certain amount of reality, but in this case you would need to hang it and then bury it in the back garden for eternity.
I'll definitely be reading other books by this author.
