About W. Michael Gear
Greetings, All:
I started out as a physical anthropologist, boiling human bodies and identifying pathological bone in the Colorado State University Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology. Life as a starving graduate student changed when Western Wyoming College offered me a field archaeologist position. With my M.A. in hand and a BMW motorcycle as my only transportation, I tied on a tent, then my little Sheltie dog Ted hopped onto the tank, and we were off to Rock Springs, Wyoming. Neither Ted, nor I, ever looked back.
When winter interfered with "have trowel will travel" field work, I lived in the family cabin, built in 1859, high on Berthoud Pass in the Colorado Rockies. There, I read beside the wood stove, played stick with Ted, and enjoyed great classical music, up until the day I read a western novel that made me crazy. What set me off was the ending, where a herd of steers (neutered male cattle) were having spring calves. I threw the book across the room, vowing I could do better. I started my first book the next morning, and within two weeks had finished a 500 page Western novel. (Don't look so impressed, it was real crap.) But the bug had bitten. I LOVED writing.
A couple of years, and eight unsold novels, later, I met Kathleen O'Neal (now Kathleen O'Neal Gear) at an archaeological meeting in Laramie. She was working as the Wyoming State Historian at the time. She stepped on my hat. I was raised old-school where you didn't wear a hat in a restaurant, so I'd thrown it on the floor. A couple of weeks later, we discussed writing over our first date, discovering yet another shared dream.
Since then it's been one hell of a ride. I've published twenty novels under my own name in the fields of SF, Thriller, Historical, and Western, and another forty-some Prehistory, Techno-Thriller, YA novels and non-fiction articles co-authored with Kathleen. Together we have close to 18 million copies of our books in print and translated into 29 languages. We've seen our titles on the New York Times, the USA Today, Toronto Star, Het Parole, and host of other international bestseller lists around the world. My novel UNRECONCILED was placed 1st in the International Book Awards for the science fiction category. Several of our novels have been finalists for the Western Writers "Spur" award, and our co-authored PEOPLE OF THE RAVEN was a spur winner.
These days we spend our lives writing novels and wrangling a wily shetland sheep dog named Jake. In January of 2021, Kathleen and I received the Owen Wister Award for lifetime contributions to Western literature. We are deeply honored and humbled by the award. We will be installed in the Western Writers Hall of Fame this summer. No sooner than that had happened than I was infomed that I will also be inducted into the Colorado Authors' Hall of Fame on September 18, 2021.

Blog postHi All,
It’s always a sober day in the Gear household when scenarios we predicted in our books show up on the morning news, as has been the case over the past few days with the Russian cyberattacks that shut down Ukrainian banks.
When we were writing DISSOLUTION and FOURTH QUADRANT, we knew it was inevitable, but that doesn’t make it any easier to watch the lines of people crowding in front of Ukrainian ATMSs, desperate to take out money before their accounts read zero3 months ago Read more -

Blog postHi All,
It’s a beautiful morning in northern Wyoming. Sunlight has just hit the rim of Red Canyon, turning the sandstone from deep red to bright red. The ledges are all frosted with snow, so the color contrast is stunning. We have a flock of pinyon jays sailing around the house, waiting for us to fill the bird feeders–which is our next task. Then we are off to work on PEOPLE OF THE CANYONS and UNRECONCILED (the 4th book in the Donovan series).
Hope you are all healthy and happ3 years ago Read more

Meanwhile, in the distant east, a desperate three-way race is underway. Walking Smoke—the Lightning Shell witch—hastens to make his way back to Cahokia, understanding that the cure for his impotence lies atop Morning Star’s Mound.
Night Shadow Star means to stop him before he can get to Morning Star. Following in her wake, Fire Cat is merciless. He will stop at nothing to ensure that it is he, not Night Shadow Star, who pays the ultimate price.

A sweeping epic of prehistory, People of the Wolf is another compelling novel in the majestic North America's Forgotten Past series from New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear
In the dawn of history, a valiant people forged a pathway from an old world into a new one. Led by a dreamer who followed the spirit of the wolf, a handful of courageous men and women dared to cross the frozen wastes to find an untouched, unspoiled continent.

For anthropology graduate student Sam Delgado, headed to the wilds of Wyoming, this is his last chance to save his graduate career. He and his urban classmates see this as the adventure of a lifetime: They are going to horse-pack in the wilderness to map and test a high-altitude archaeological site.
Until a cyber-attack collapses the American banking system, and an already fractured nation descends into anarchy and chaos. All credit frozen, Sam and his archaeological field school is trapped in their high-altitude camp. With return to the East impossible, Sam, the woman he has come to love, and the rest of the students must rely on hard-bitten Wyoming ranchers for their very survival.
Guided only by an illusive Shoshone spirit helper, Sam will discover the meaning of self-sacrifice. Even at the cost of his life.
Haunting, provoking, frightening and prescient – in the end, all that stands between civilization and barbarism is one young man’s courage and belief in himself.
“Gear is a master when it comes to vividly described settings: you can smell the smoke, hear the wind in the trees, and feel the cold.”
W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O’Neal Gear, international bestselling authors of Dissolution, present a gripping, thought-provoking contemporary thriller in the tradition of Michael Chrichton’s Jurassic Park. Here a project of cutting-edge genetics might lead to a better world—or a waking nightmare.
For thirteen years—since he became one of several scientists chosen to raise apes bred by the pharmaceutical giant SAC—Dr. Jim Dutton, his young daughter Brett, and the bonobo ape Umber have been a family. For Umber is far more than a subject or pet. She types, reads, speaks sign language, favors psychedelic clothes, and even contemplates the nature of God.
Then a colleague forces Jim to confront the reality he’s tried to ignore: Umber and the other SAC apes are too intelligent to be pure bonobos. They are “augmented” apes, more like early hominids than to anthropoids. And when SAC abruptly demands Umber’s immediate return, it becomes vital for Jim to discover why the corporation created this new species.
The quest for answers will take Jim and his family to Africa, to a SAC facility that fronts as a preserve dedicated to helping once-captive chimps. But the grounds also hide a covert genetics lab, a missing band of blue-eyed apes, crude buildings decorated with skulls, and, deep in the shadows, human corpses savagely hacked to pieces...
Now the struggle to uncover SAC’s secrets becomes a fight for survival. Suddenly Umber, Brett, and Jim find themselves hunted by beings who are fiercely territorial, brutally aggressive, and far stronger than any human.
And like humans they can be utterly, and murderously, psychotic...
FROM WESTERN WORD-SLINGER AND ANTHROPOLOGIST W. MICHAEL GEAR, COMES THE SEQUEL TO THE BESTSELLING CONTEMPORARY APOCALYPTIC WESTERN, DISSOLUTION.
Lauren Davis is closing on her twenty-first birthday when a cyberattack leads to the collapse of the American banking system. On the advice of her boyfriend, a special forces lieutenant, she is told to flee Colorado Springs and make her way to Tappan Ranch in Wyoming. As the country continues to fall apart, Lauren and Randy Howman, a co-worker at her bank, make their way through the Colorado Rockies.
On the advice of Tiffany Bishop, an old friend in Laramie, Lauren goes to work with an old boyfriend, Mike Vinich, providing FEMA provisions to refugees housed on a ranch outside of Cheyenne. There, she runs supplies to the outposts being established along the Wyoming/ Colorado line—what Governor Agar calls The Fourth Quadrant. When a riot breaks out and Mike is shot, Lauren ends up being called a hero. But fame comes at a great personal cost, and Lauren’s demons are closing in.
Pulled from duty along the Fourth Quadrant, and with Mike in a coma, Lauren learns of a raid on Laramie. There, she is taken hostage along with a busload of school children. With nothing left to lose, and nothing to live for, Lauren is forced to make one last gamble…

Donovan is a world of remarkable wealth, a habitable paradise of a planet. It sounds like a dream come true. But Donovan's wealth comes at a price.
When the ship Turalon arrives in orbit, Supervisor Kalico Aguila discovers a failing colony, its government overthrown and the few remaining colonists now gone wild. Donovan offers the chance of a lifetime, one that could leave her the most powerful woman in the solar system. Or dead.
Planetside, Talina Perez is one of three rulers of the Port Authority colony—the only law left in the one remaining town on Donovan. With the Corporate ship demanding answers about the things she's done in the name of survival, Perez could lose everything, including her life.
For Dan Wirth, Donovan is a last chance. A psychopath with a death sentence looming over his head, he can't wait to set foot on Port Authority. He will make one desperate play to grab a piece of the action—no matter who he has to corrupt, murder, or destroy.
Captain Max Taggart has been The Corporation's "go-to" guy when it comes to brutal enforcement. As the situation in Port Authority deteriorates, he'll be faced with tough choices to control the wild Donovanians. Only Talina Perez stands in his way.
Just as matters spiral out of control, a ghost ship, the Freelander, appears in orbit. Missing for two years, she arrives with a crew dead of old age, and reeks of a bizarre death-cult ritual that deters any ship from attempting a return journey. And in the meantime, a brutal killer is stalking all of them, for Donovan plays its own complex and deadly game. The secrets of which are hidden in Talina Perez's very blood.
The Maritime Unit had landed in paradise. After a terrifying ten-year transit from Solar System aboard the Ashanti, the small band of oceanographers and marine scientists were finally settled. Perched on a reef five hundred kilometers out from shore, they were about to embark on the first exploration of Donovan's seas. For the twenty-two adults and nine children, everything is new, exciting, and filled with wonder as they discover dazzling sea creatures, stunning plant life, and fascinating organisms.
But Donovan is never what it seems; the changes in the children were innocuous--oddities of behavior normal to kids who'd found themselves in a new world. Even then it was too late. An alien intelligence, with its own agenda, now possesses the children, and it will use them in a most insidious way: as the perfect weapons.
How can you fight back when the enemy is smarter than you are, and wears the face of your own child?
Welcome to Donovan.
It is a time of fire. A small band of pioneers struggle valiantly to keep their ancestors' dreams alive in an unforgiving, drought-stricken land. Driven by the promise of an awesome vision, a heroic young dreamer and a fearless woman warrior unite to lead their people to a magnificent destiny.

Fearing their ultimate demise, the folk manage to trade him off in marriage to Musselwhite, a woman warrior who knows nothing of the prophecy.
