As this Story Tells it, I Don’t Like Hakon

This is one miserable person who is not, in any way, shape, or form, a Great King. He is petty, a very limp-spined young king to be that killed many of his men because of inexperience.

As a king in his prime he had a Big Ego and a temper that rooked no question by those who had good, valid input. But Hakon just ignored it and got angry if he didn’t like it.

As a king past his physical prime he was obstinate, maudlin at his long time friends getting bumped off, and was back to being a Super Gloomy Gus who forgot just who got him into the kingship (Hint: it wasn’t his poor head work and allowing a family of killers go free, only to have them return to devastate Old Norway and drive back the advance of the Nordic culture.

At the end he was a petty tyrant in all but name.

War King is an amazing book. A must read ending for Hakon's Saga, the book brings everything together for a close of the series that is both dramatic and attention grabbing as well as detailed. I would like to applaud the author on his knowledge of Viking traditions, and that he shares this info with the reader at the start of the book in a comprehensive word guide, so that the reader is not lost in the words and phrases used, but can enjoy the story itself. I also very much like that, despite the previous book and this one being separated by 20 years, this does not turn out to be a particularly jarring transition, and is surprisingly easy to understand. Although this is a true story, the author still makes a great story arc while keeping to the facts that are known. Overall, an amazing book, worthy of bringing an all around great series to a close. 5/5!

Like the two books before this, War King is beautifully written. I have no interest in this period or location (the first one being a reading assignment), but was excited to continue with this story - reading both the second and third of the series. Despite the gruesome battle scenes, (which are tastefully done), there is tremendous heart and emotion in this series, and particularly in this third book. The flow and pace are excellent, and the characters very interesting. I can understand the appeal of Hakon; he makes a good king. Congratulations to Mr Schumacher! Well done!

How does one write a review about a perfect novel where the research shines through his descriptions and the characters take on a life of their own? Hakon Haraldsson, the first Christion king of Norway still rules the realm of Erik Bloodaxe, but his sons arrive in force to retake it. The battles are epic. The destruction and suffering across the land almost unimaginable and still they fight on. This is an adventure, yet a historical novel of epic portions.

This third book in the Hakon Saga continues the drama of the first two novels, with exciting battles, love stories, moral dilemmas, and plenty of "Oh my gosh, did that just happen?" moments. I have really enjoyed all three books in the series, especially watching Hakon's growth from an innocent youth to an adult sometimes beaten down by the fact that life is never as black and white as it seems. This is a much darker novel than the first two but rings true throughout. I wholeheartedly recommend this book - and series - whether or not historical fiction is your preferred genre.

I enjoyed all three books in the series. Plenty of action and the tales feel authentic. I like that the series came to a clear ending and the author didn't try to drag this out. I was afraid the series would be overloaded with Christian proselytizing but that was not the case. It was kept to the sidelines and the old gods were there to the end with Valhalla waiting.

It is often said that an author “fleshes out” the bare skeleton of his or her characters. In the case of Hakon Haraldsson, Eric Schumacher has fleshed out what is, in effect, a mere handful of bones, as the historical record of Hakon’s life is sparse. The result is a character filled with ambitions, conflicts and doubts, as he strives to draw together a number of pagan chieftains whilst maintaining the Christian principles he adopted as a foster son of the English King Athelstan.

Like the previous two books of Hakon's Saga, I have found this book so engrossing that, had I not had other commitments, I would have read each at a single sitting.
