However I wish there was more build on the the relationship between Cal and Mare. Maybe some more with Farley. I feel as though I got a great in complex and in depth relationship with Maven and at times with Evangeline (someone make them a crime fighting pair please) it just felt like some of the other relationships became flat after a while. Not changing or growing. I also would have liked to see more character development in Mare. I just felt that she also felt flat in the last two books. The POV switched up in the last two books so that could be one reason why, but I just wished I could see her grow. Instead she seemed to kind of stay the same, very dark, “I’m a monster”, “I’m strong as lightning” which are very real emotions but I wish she would have explored Mare growing more. I guess that’s what the epilogue was setting up, but all that growth is left to our imagination and that’s what I enjoy most in books with strong characters.
I also wish it didn’t end so abruptly. I was shocked when the end riding came up because it just seemed like this book was setting up for this large earth shattering ending and it was just like... we have submarines. We won. It just felt rushed and careless. Then Mare kills Maven, talks to Cal and then they break up, and she leaves... also without ANY explanation as to how the revolution is doing or how they are going change the society or the fact that Cal decides to throw the crown away because Evangeline tells him its not too late? But not because you know the girls who you love and is a red tells you too... Overall I was really happy with this book, I think I’m just a bit bitter because at the end I’m left with more questions than answers. I loved the story so much I want the answers. The whole book was about a revolution that we never get answers too and that seems like a disservice to the story. But maybe that’s the point, Mare left it behind to find herself and to not think or be involved in some of those things, and maybe we’re supposed to follow suit.
I have never felt more anxious over the ending of a book as I did for this. If I’m being honest, there’s only two characters I really care about in this series, Mare and Cal. Most especially Cal. I think I’ve never cared for any fictional character as much as I did for Cal and I have no idea why. This book was torture for me. Every accidental touch, every stolen glance had me dying. It set me on edge, afraid for what might happen because I wouldn’t put it past Victoria to kill someone.
War Storm is written in the following POVs:
Mare - I love seeing the story through her eyes. She did not annoy me in this book, thank God.
Cal - Finally. I did not read any spoilers and his POV comes at a later part in the book so I was pleasantly surprised. I wanted to see how the world looks in his eyes and I wish the book had more of it. :(
Maven - Maven is the kind of character you can never hate, no matter what he did. His POV made me feel so much sympathy for him and it’s heartbreaking how he can’t help to be the way he is. He deserved better.
Evangeline - Although I liked some parts of her POV (and what she did to Mare and Cal *winks*), I don’t like her enough for her personal life to interest me. I feel that her relationship with Elane, especially their moments, feels a bit forced.
Iris - She is another character I do not care about. I guess Victoria felt the need for her POV to tell the other side of the story.
In my opinion, it would have been enough if it only had Mare, Cal, and Maven's POV. Having Iris and Evangeline's POV showed too many sides of the story. The plot would have been more surprising if we did not know what they were planning.
You might wonder why I gave this book four stars even though I was so invested in the characters and the story. As much as I love this series, I can’t ignore the flaws in this book. Although I can’t say it is dragging, I feel that it isn’t fast enough. If I could describe it in one word, somehow, it seems.. sluggish . And the ending is a bit anticlimactic. It certainly affected me in some way and I still have a hard time moving on but I have my biases. If I look at it objectively, it is not enough.

Firstly, I’ve really enjoyed the series and would recommend this to any fiction fan. I really liked that Aveyard has written chapters from different characters perspectives rather than just Mares again - it allows us to get to know them just that bit more before the end; Mare’s still on edge, scared of Maven, scared to be in shackles again, Evangeline is still hopelessly devoted to Elane and will do anything to be back with her, Iris, Maven’s Queen, determined to overthrow her husband and avenge her father’s death. A lot of dedication has been put into this series to war strategies and with so much description of the setting it’s very hard not to imagine a Game of Thrones type scenes!
*SPOILER ALERT*
I’m a bit miffed at the ending… Mare Barrow… you have done nothing but worry, fret, cry and hope for Cal to choose you over the throne… So why at the end of it all did you not leap into his arms and be with him?! What is all this “I need to find out who I am” rubbish?! I’m sorry, 4 books in and you still don’t know and you’re turning down the man you are completely in love with and threw away his family, his home, his reign and changed the world for you to go on some “find yourself” tour? Just no! We went on a journey with you guys and we deserved the ending we wanted! I was a Mare fan until that point. It was completely unnecessary and if I were Cal I’d tell you to get on your jet and not come back! The man has lost his father, his brother, his home, EVERYTHING and if you truly loved him you wouldn’t punch him in the gut one last time! Aaaaaand breathe…
Overall, it was a great series with great characters and a fantastic storyline!

Spoilers - only read this bit if you have read or don't care:
She thinks Cal resents her for killing Maven? Was he unclear when she explicitly went off to kill him? When she nearly died killing him? Also why wasn't he offed by Tyton ten seconds after they arrived. Nonsense. They also have secret submarines? The conflict isn't resolved and Cal & Mare's romance isn't resolved properly - so how is this the final book. Perhaps less time on the excessive acknowledgements to various politicians might have freed up some time. I also 4 books in still don't get how powers are passed on etc.

Bad points:
-still don't believe in the characters, poor character development
-really didn't like Mare.... Selfish, full of own self importance, made lots of bad decisions
-felt completely uninvested in main love story
-what was Maven's mum up to in those caves in book one???? Why make such a big deal out of it and then not have a plot twist around it?!?!! This really got my goat.
-sooooooo predictable an outcome!!!!!
-zero plot twists that shocked me
-struggled to find the will to turn to the next page or pick up the book
-too many story lines that felt pointless or lead nowhere
Good point:
-the author writes a brilliant battle scene. I actually did enjoy these parts but this just made me angry because she can obviously write well so why was the rest of the series so LACKING????
I can't be bothered to delve any deeper into my feelings about this book/series. But I certainly won't be recomending it to anyone.

As with the previous books in the series, it would have been much more enjoyable to read if the editor had tightened the writing, preferably removing all the 'oh-so-'s, the 'how many/how/what, I don't know's' etc. Adding in the different points of view chapters only reinforced how annoying the repetition was as you could no longer dismiss it as just Mare's way of speaking.
I can see some others weren't satisfied with the ending but for me, it was a fitting end. I liked that it showed the first hint that self-important, whiny Mare might be maturing a little.
There's a frustratingly cliched and unsophisticated view of romantic love on show here but the series touches deftly on some big issues, gently easing in narratives of power and privilege, race and sexuality and Aveyard should be congratulated on that.
While there's lots of reasons not to like these books, I haven't read anything else so engaging this year!
