Watching The Detectives

A film noir buff to the extreme (Cillian Murphy) is given a taste of his own medicine and has his life turned upside down by a kooky femme fatale (Lucy Liu) with a big adventure in mind. Sometimes love is stranger than fiction.

Life's An Adventure

After reading some of the reviews here, I felt compelled to give my two cents for what it's worth. I thought this movie was very enjoyable to watch. No, it's not the cookie-cutter version of a detective movie that others are complaining it SHOULD have been!? And both actors worked brilliantly together.

For those who like to take a walk on the wild side and just go with the flow, you will enjoy the unknown chaos that Liu's character brings to Murphy's universe, and his milque toast world IS shattered for the better IMO.

The message here: LIVE life to its fullest, don't just passively watch it going by.

Can't help but feel this film is for a 'certain' type of person
Verified purchase
Watched this movie. It's weird because a lot happens but it feels so slow (and mind you I was skipping a few of the more predictable scenes and definitely the indie rock montages). I guess because it takes so long to get to a 'point' (emphasis on the quotes.

Anyway the film is suppose to be a romantic comedy I suppose, but one that is meant for a certain type of person. I think those persons would be problem-free, privileged, wonderful-life having , housewives or the 'i heart quirky' young types. It's a 'fun' and 'whimsical' pointless adventure in my opinion. Almost *too* fun for reality IMO to believe that this type of romance and courtship would happen. So I guess it's "utopic quirky romance comedy" if it was a genre.

Usually when screenwriters write stories there is 'Man vs Something'. That something is a problem...but there was no real problem here. It was just meandering and random scenes for the majority of the movie that I guess was to show their 'relationship building'. Though it really felt like an aimless journey when you get to the end.

Anyway the film wasn't for me for sure. Acting was however still solid. Despite that I like Lucy Liu's character/energy and her acting was great for her role imo... I still kept feeling like she is too old to play this effervescent whimsical character. I felt that if they would've cast some younger (maybe less famous) talent to replace her and the main guy it would've made more sense. Altho I can see why they stuck with the big names because I only was interested to watch it for Lucy Liu and Guy from Inception....but did they do themselves a disservice by not going the full on 'indie' route like with Juno (Ellen Page and Michael Cera) or Paper Heart (weirdo Asian girl and Michael Cera again lol)? Eh maybe so.

Cute movie

I was surprised at some of the twists and turns. Lucy Liu is so cute and funny. She delivers her lines with perfect timing and maintains a mysterious quirkiness throughout the movie. It really wasn't the type of movie I usually watch to the end ,but I did because it was entertaining, with enough new information and unpredictability to keep me interested. Her co-star filled his part perfectly as well.

refreshingly different!

I'm not usually a big fan of comedy, particularly romantic comedies. I prefer dramas. I'm really glad though that I took a chance on this movie. I don't know when I've laughed so much. The story line is offbeat and brilliant, and both Cillian Murphy and Lucy Liu are impeccable in their delivery. Two pros who are obviously enjoying themselves.. (Who knew gorgeous Cillian Murphy could be so comedic!) It's sophisticated humor, yet almost slapstick at times. Thoroughly entertaining.

Pointless!
Verified purchase
I kept hoping for a point to this movie. Spoiler: she works for the mob? No I don't get it. She wants excitement all the time, feels too weird and pointless. All though the other lead, seems to live his life only through movies, which is pointless too. Do yourself a favor and do something besides watching this movie! (As for myself, I was multi-tasking while watching, so not a total waste of time.)

Nope

I like Lucy Liu, but she wasn't right for the role, or it wasn't right for her - take your pick. The movie wandered aimlessly toward pointlessness. But it did get there, finally, dragging me along. Wasted time.

Watchable romantic comedy not typical
Verified purchase
I didn't enjoy the film much but it was different and watchable and that is a rare commodity. Maybe a 4 star or maybe a 3, I dunno so I choose 3. This isn't a great confident review, but it is a slightly confused very honest review. There. Ya know if there were thousands of reviews, I wouldn't of made a review, but there were only about 88 when I did this, so I feel slightly obliged to give an honest opinion, even if it is not sure. Maybe the review fits a romantic odd comedy that wasn't clear cut in a plot or point, but okay anyway. Okay.

Lucy Liu tries to get Cillian Murphy out of his store and away from his TV into the world
Verified purchase
Cillian Murphy is a movie nerd who’s struggling to keep his video store open. Then he meets Lucy Liu who is a subversive and completely changes his life around. The movie is about their oddball relationship. That leads to a lot of fun and adventure as Liu tries to introduce Murphy to the world outside of his living room and away from his TV. It definitely goes in many unexpected directions and keeps you off balance.
