Great show that outshines its source material

Remember when we first hear of the Battlestar Galactica remake? We said -"really? That Star-Wars wannabe cheesy sci-fi show?" And then we got an amazing ride with every kind of emotion and situation that was deep, and interesting. So here we are with Westworld, a remake of a Michael Crichton movie. And we got a wild ride where we literally discuss the ability of mankind to "play God" and create a race of self-aware robots for the explicit purpose of being playthings for rich people. FIrst of all this is just great storytelling, with numerous interwoven plots that jump not just between characters but (you'll figure it out). There is a lot of great acting and the production values are in line with feature films. I recommend this series as one of the best things I've seen ever on television. Well done.

Have you ever questioned the nature of your existence?

This is a re-imagining of the classic from the 1970s. The premise is that, sometime in the future, technology gets to the point where there is a "wild wild west" theme park. So far, it doesn't sound very impressive, huh? Here's the catch: the characters in the park are all robots and the "theme park" stretches out for hundreds of square miles in the SW United States.

Things start to go awry when the "hosts" (as the robots are called) begin to deviate from the parameters of their programs. The series asks a lot of existential philosophical questions, such as: what is life? what is consciousness? when does a robot that is programmed qualify as a sentient being? is the line-of-demarcation blurred? what is free will? or does such a thing exist? do are advances in technology give us the right to "play god"? is there such a thing as pre-destination or fate? what are the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI for short) spiraling out of control?

If you're ready for a cerebral series, this just might be for you. From the opening, haunting theme it draws you in. Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins give the series a touch of class and Evan Rachel Wood nails her role as the sweet & innocent homesteader in the west. People who are fans of WESTWORLD will likely also like [[ASIN:B00XI057M0 Ex Machina [Blu-ray + Digital HD]]], [[ASIN:B001CEE1YE The Complete Matrix Trilogy (The Matrix / The Matrix Reloaded / The Matrix Revolutions) [Blu-ray]]] and [[ASIN:B0027UY8B8 Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] [Region-Free]]]. All of these movies delve into the dangers and opportunities of AI.

Buy it for the HDR, not the 4K
Verified purchase
The 4K is not real 4K. I just want to get that out there. They have taken a 2K master and up-scaled it to 4K. There really should be some kind of disclaimer or guard against false advertising, but it is what it is. If 4K Blu-Rays get popular enough, maybe we'll see it happen. It's not bad picture quality, but if you sit relatively close to your TV like I do, it is noticeably less detailed than true 4K Blu-Rays.

If you're buying this, it should be for the HDR. There are many night and dark scenes in this show, which are substantially improved by the increased dynamic range. No more blocky patches of black in the night scenes that seem to crawl around the screen. That alone is worth it.

The show itself is 5 stars. It has some of the best pacing and story progression ever. Keeps you engaged while gradually revealing pieces of a much larger picture. Each scene has a reason for being, there's no filler or extraneous parts.

Unlike many shows, I was hooked from the very first episode and re-watched it immediately. I hope this genius continues into the following seasons, because I enjoy it more than GOT. Avoid reading an abundance of reviews or details of the actual story, as it spoils the intrigue of following along with its reveal.

High Concept and Thoroughly Thought Provoking Science Fiction Series
Verified purchase
Awesome, visionary science fiction series takes Michael Crichton's book (essentially an old-west prototype of Jurassic Park) and uses that as a springboard for a dark, complex allegory with a modern treatment, including it's absolutely superb, polished production values and dramatic storytelling. This is real science fiction with an emphasis on self-consciousness, artificial intelligence, creation (divine, biological and artistic) and it's sociological aspects. Truly ambitious, extraordinarily intellectual with intelligent dialogue, and allusions to Paradise Lost, Shakespeare, and mythology as well as film making itself. The show's world and setting are very well done as well, from it's gorgeous plateau, canyon and sagebrush filled scenery, to it's stark facility and medical center. The memorable music and score are haunting and capture the mysterious, dark, creepy mood and chilling violence. The cast is excellent, especially Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris and Jeffery Wright. Hopkins steals nearly every scene he's in, his soliloquies are completely captivating -one of his finest roles. Let's not forget perhaps the most famous star of the show- the now infamous and iconic player piano (a brilliant symbol). This all adds up to a memorable and rewarding experience. A decent amount of extra content highlights many of the themes explored and the creative process. Another high quality show from HBO worth multiple viewings.Perfect for fans of open world style, quest-based video games.

One box, 10 hours of thought provoking entertainment. You'll be hooked before the first episode ends.

First, they need to add a couple of stars, five is not enough. The story, the costumes, multiple time lines, the Easter eggs. All of it comes together to make this one of the best science fiction and action adventure stories I've ever seen. A great ensemble cast where each character pulls you in a little more. You can't watch without feeling something for each of them. Whether it be hate, love or sympathy, you're going to grow attached to them. My favorite is Maeve, the brothel madam, played by Thandie Newton, such a tortured soul within that beautiful body. The proper British accent is a nice touch also. My second would be Bernard, played by Jeffrey Wright, everything seems to pivot around him, and he plays the role superbly. Anthony Hopkins is a master at playing sinister characters and he does so here. One moment he's like your grandfather, the next you expect a knife between your ribs. If you don't want to subscribe to HBO, buy this collection!

Unsure at first.

I was unsure at first, I was afraid the violence and nudity was taking away from the story. I realized along the way that it served a few purposes. The acting is above board, writing is good, over all story was retold well. The story itself is my no means a new idea but a well written modern take on a very old one. Will watch season two and for those considering watching it keep in mind it is rated MA for good reasons.

Fantastic!

This was everything I had hoped for when I first heard HBO was making a series based on Crichton's Westworld film. It was always one of my favorite movies, and it was very far ahead of its time. It was made in 1973, yet it used an idea that a piece of code could act like a virus and spread from one computer to another. I found that fascinating on a later viewing of the film; a computer virus. However, this is about the series, not the film. The series is amazingly good. The cinematography is better than most feature films made today. The acting is wonderful. The story, though unfinished, is very deep, with many cognitive levels for the viewer to explore, and a lot of entertaining dissonance to feel. I hope the artists involved in the series continue at this fantastic level of achievement. I feel this is a new level of television that surpasses the ability of film in storytelling. But, what do I know, heh. I hope people watch this first season with an open mind and enjoy it as much as I did.

Audio and visual quality of the 4k/HDR discs are outstanding, but unfortunately disc 3 of the set for me doesn't work. Amazon, WB, and HBO have been no help, so it looks like I'll have to order a new box set to finish out the season in high quality.
