But the rest of the tale makes up for that. I really like Bob and Nikki, and the banter in these books is always fun, even when there are too many cultural references used. (which the "aliens" always end up complaining about.)
The main thing is that these books are written by someone who loves to tell tales and was having fun. You want to immerse yourself in the tale and I'm sure quite a few people who have read the series have a couple of characters they'd love to meet in real life if they existed.
Definitely a series worth picking up and reading.
So no thought is put into actually keeping the story consistent, or overcoming bad guys, just “we have a problem, oh here is the solution” same page solutions to every problem, no actual intrigue or trials, or pain.
Think Lego Movie, “everything is awesome, everything is cool when you’re part of the team, everything is awesome, when you’re living the dream.”
Fun, clever, funny, but very thin.
If you are, look elsewhere, 'cause this definitely ain't none of the above.
I've read the first two books of the series, the second one in a single day, and can say it has been a painful experience. My sides hurt badly because I've been laughing so hard.
A completely non-scientific analysis of the dialog in the books reveals that just about every other line spoken by a character is hilarious . I would definitely not recommend reading these books while drinking anything. It could prove embarrassing and messy.
The story starts off on the first page of the first book, and mostly keeps up that pace. The situations in which the characters find themselves are definitely interesting and frequently require ingenuous solutions. The characters, even the aliens, are likeable. Mostly.
I could go on and on, and normally would, but it would spoil the books for potential readers. Just buy the first one, sit back, and buckle up.
Sometimes there will be pages of dialog with conversations and banter going back and forth with no clear clues on who is saying what! And then there is the cardinal sin of having two people speaking in one paragraph! I often find I have to go back several pages to figure out who is speaking what!
Never the less, I love the heck out of these books! I usually read a book in a series, then read a book in another series and get back to the first series later. I find myself binging on this series because they are so much fun!
