This is a must see. I initially picked it because of David Tennant being in it and didn't expect it to be all that great of a movie overall. Of course the kids stole the movie and their interaction with Grand dad was exceptional, the feeling it leaves one with is fabulous. Highly recommended for the story, the acting and the scenery as well.

The title and art work suggest a low ball frat house film and instead we find a classy, moving, coming of age film that covers life transitions for virtually all ages.
Billy Connolly's performance is nothing short of brilliant and his character acts as a centering beauty for all the challenges that seem to make life difficult.
Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin get most of the credit. Together they wrote and directed this masterpiece.
Doug McLeod (David Tennant) and his wife Abi (Rosamund Pike) unite following a tense separation to travel to the Scottish Highlands for Doug's father Gordie's (Billy Connolly) birthday. Gordie has terminal cancer so Doug's brother, millionaire Gavin McLeod (Ben Miller) has arranged a lavish party for him, inviting all the important people in the neighbourhood. Despite difficulties getting their three children, Lottie (Emilia Jones), Mickey (Bobby Smalldridge), and Jess (Harriet Turnbull), to leave the house, they hit the road, but find it congested and they are forced to stop overnight. Lottie expresses her troubles with trusting her parents following their recent separation and lies to each other; it is revealed that Doug had an affair, which led to Abi moving out and taking legal proceedings against him. They are only travelling to the Highlands together to appear as a couple for Gordie, not wanting to upset him in his final months. There is vast tension between the "adults" while Gordie, solidly at peace with himself helps the children to grow in ways that no one would expect yet no one could condemn.
Filmed in Scotland, with art direction that parallels "Out Of Africa" this film is a must. It's funny, moving, familiar and deserves your eye.

I originally watched the movie because you can never have too much David Tennant, and I suppose I was expecting some cheesy road-trip comedy like RV. Instead, I got a hilarious look at every stage of life, from childhood to death. I literally laughed and cried and laughed again. The acting is amazing, and the characters are so very dear. Please, if you're thinking of watching this movie, do it.

I must admit to becoming somewhat of a softy with my emotions as I crossed the 60's threshold and having Grandchildren of my own this film really was a joy to watch and provided some of the best laughter my Wife and I have enjoyed in some time.
Near the end however, without giving away any plot, I was moved to tears but it was short lived as all the actors, especially the child actors reignited the laughter to finsih the film out.
We love everything we have watched with David Tennant in it. He is such a diverse actor that as soon as his name appears in the list of characters, the films goes on the watchlist. But in this film, David is overpowered by the 3 young child actors who are simply outstanding and so believable in their performances.
Loved the film and definitately recommend it for anyone reaching the Grandparent stage of their lives.

This movie was a laugh a minute! It was creative and funny and touching and was able to address real life problems without being stuffy and boring. It made you realize that it is ok to laugh at yourself and stop being such a tight "arse" as they say in the movie. It was fun and emotional and really eye awakening! I saw the person with the 1 star review who said he turned it off after 20 minutes because it depicted brats. Sorry, but you are so wrong on your rating that it makes your rating painfully stupid. If you had seen the entire film you would have learned that those "brats" and the parents that made them that way learned and grew and came into their own through love and tragedy that was sprinkled with tons of humor. I would watch this a million times more for sure!! Way to go BBC! You produced another winner!!

Rosamund Pike and Billy Connolly were reasons enough to watch this bitter sweet movie, but the three children, Emilia Jones, Bobby Smallridge, and Harriet Turnbull will steal your hearts and never return them. It is a story about every family - how they fight, what they fight about, and how they resolve their problems. Some problems take longer to resolve; and some take novel methods and luck. The Abbi and Doug McLeod's matrimonial problems dissipated in an old Viking funeral for Doug's charming and affable father, Gordie McLeod. Fantastic supporting performances from Doug's brother and sister-in-law, played by Ben Miller and Amelia Bullmore respectively - not forgetting Celia Imrie's role as a social welfare investigator. You'll wan to watch this movie over and over.

This movie was a pleasant surprise. I was looking for something mindless, but this was a funny, sometimes sad, touching film about a highly dysfunctional family. The parents, who are so involved in their own problems, failed to recognize that the parent/child roles were reversed. The children, who were much more clever and adult than their parents, brilliantly handled a very stressful event using childlike faith. After a series of unpredictable events, the parents finally understand their need to act like adults. Some of the situations were a bit over the top but lightened the theme to make this film more of a "dramedy" than another depressing film about a crumbling family. This film is not for young children because of the adult situations and some language, but it would be appropriate for early teens and up.

Enjoyable Family Comedy with Cracking Cast and Beautiful Scottish Locations
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 6, 2018
This is a really enjoyable family drama cum comedy set in the stunning Scottish Highlands and featuring a cracking cast including the incomparable Billy Connolly, the ever enjoyable David Tennant and the utterly delightful Rosamund Pike. Several further well known faces appear in supporting roles, among them two particular favourites of mine, Celia Imrie and Ben Miller.
The story of the dysfunctional family of Doug and Abi (Tennant and Pike) - in the middle of a messy divorce - and their three young children, heading from London to Scotland for a family reunion and playing happy families for the benefit of dying grandfather Gordie (Connolly) and the relations, is told with much humour. The characters are relatable and even Doug's pompous brother Gavin is not entirely unlikable thanks to a highly enjoyable performance by Ben Miller. You can't but love Connolly as the wise and loving grandfather who knows what's going on, but mostly goes along with the plans of the adults while spending quality time with his grandchildren whenever he can. It is beautiful to see a loving grandparent treating young grandchildren with so much honesty and dignity, while still having fun with them and ensuring they will have unique and lasting memories of him and their time with him.
I really enjoyed the film, the laughs came thick and fast thanks to an excellent script and excellent performances from the entire cast, including the various child actors/actresses. Much of the humour comes from everyday situations being allowed to develop into outrageous events. The ending is nicely handled, thankfully without becoming either preachy or overly syrupy. Highly recommended.
The DVD is good. There are English subtitles for those who may need them, also an audio description and the following extra features:
~~~ Interviews (with directors Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, and stars Rosamund Pike, David Tennant, Billy Connolly)
~~~Deleted Scenes
~~~Commentary with directors Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin
Wonderful movie with great cast!
Couldn't resist buying this movie after seeing a trailer for it on the telly. How can you not be tempted with such a great cast which includes the wonderful Billy Connolly?
This is a wonderful movie with a fantastic story and Billy Connolly plays a great part in this. I don't want to say too much as I don't want to spoil it but this movie will make you smile, it will make you laugh and it will make you cry. It made me cry and and a grown man!
Great film - great cast. Thoroughly recommended.
I thoroughly recommend this funny, thoughtful film set admidst the stunning Scottish Highlands. The dream cast come close to being out classed by the three child actors.
It might be me but very few films now make me laugh out loud as this offering did. Billy Connolly plays an aging grandad poignantly balancing humour and pathos whose relationship with his grandkids are at the warm heart of this film.
Despite grave events the film cleverly closes with an upbeat ending that says a lot about life, love and loss. A rare saccharine free film all the family can watch without feeling nauseous.
PS apologies to readers seeking a review of the debut Fairport Convention album!
If one wants hilarious( Billy Connelly at his best) humor mixed with a dig at just how badly adults understand children and their logic this is the book for you.
While the adults bicker and pursue their petty ends the children simply understand what Granddad desires and so gives him the send off he wants.
None of the modern funeral expense with todays 'grownup adult children attempt to make up for their neglect of the grandparents by sloshing the money stupidly on an expensive event.
Parents ask your kids what is the appropriate way to say goodbye to grandpop and grandma.
Not what I expected, so much more!
Laughter, irritation, wisdom, and "going mental", as Grandad (Bily Connolly) encourages his grandson to "let go" a bit.
Billy Connolly and his performance with his three young grandchildren brilliant by all of them.
Tears trickling gently down my face, especially knowing he has Parkinson's disease himself.
The two writers directors of this film have gifted a thought provoking master piece.
Scenes from typical family life that many will identify with, and the kids' uncomplicated perceptions, so real, especially catching on camera the youngest picking her nose and eating it!!
No acting there?!
Educational, could be used as a discussion piece in schools, many real life and death issues depicted and touched on.
Music, too. Brilliant.
