What Happens in Paradise: Paradise series Book 2 is by Elin Hilderbrand. This is fantastic. The writing is such that it takes you right to St. John and places you in the exact places the characters are in. You can visualize the stunning beaches and the turquoise water as well as the bars and restaurants. When they are on The Mississippi, you can visualize what they are seeing and feeling. Elin’s way with words is amazing.
The book continues the story of Russell Steele and his dual lives. One life was with his wife Irene and their two sons, Cash and Baker in Iowa City. The other was on St. John with Rosie and his daughter, Maia. How he managed to keep Irene from knowing about his twelve-year affair with Rosie is amazing. She just put his being absent off on his job with Tom Crofts. On the other hand, Rosie knew from the start that he was married but continued to hope that he would leave Irene and stay on St. John with her. In the meantime, he also managed to keep everyone from knowing just what he did to make all the new money that he had.
Irene and both her sons end up back on St. John. Cash to work on the tour boat, Treasure Island, with Ayers and hopefully get her to like him as much as he likes her. Baker and his son Floyd come to the island with the intention of moving there. His wife has left him for Louise and they are moving to Cleveland so it no longer matters where he lives as long as he gets Floyd to Cleveland for his visits. He intends to marry Ayers as soon as his divorce is final if she will have him. Irene comes back to work for Huck on his fishing tours. It gives her something different to so which she loves. She hopes to come to some final closure on the death of Russ.
Now, waiting for the final book in the series will be difficult. I can hardly wait to see what happens to all of the characters. Russ certainly left a mess behind him.

This series was suggested to me by 2 friends as lightweight but intriguing fictional reading, involving the setting of the Virgin Islands. So if you like daydreaming about the clear blue water and of the island life, you might enjoy it just for that. The mixed up story of the families involved on these islands and elsewhere is what takes up the 3 books of this series. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the island’s people and their way of life versus the tourists. Recommend for relaxing reading.

Having grown up on St. Croix and spent many vacations on St. John, I can tell you that Hildebrand has captured the island well...mostly of (White) transplants from the States of all class backgrounds. However, she also provides accurate glimpses of our lives as (mostly Black) West Indians, and for that I truly applaud her and thank her. LeeAnn could have been any number of my aunts or even at times my mother, except I feared my mother a lot more than Rosie feared hers! Rosie was at times me and at times my best friend. The freedom to low key roam the island with friends like Maia was starting to do along with the gossip getting home to your parents before you did—it was a large part of my childhood. The connection to nature: going on friends’ boats or sailing in a tiny Sunfish to Buck Island, hanging out in the water with dolphins and sea turtles, pausing to take in the sunsets...it was a truly captivating place to grow up and Hildebrand brought it alive for me even in the midst of rich character development and some mystery. I now live in Massachusetts and love her books set on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard too. But for me, this series deserves to be considered as one of her best efforts. I’m so many ways, she brought me home.

I read about 90% historic romance novels, but a client of mine told me about this author and her books. She said they are an easy read and a great book series. So, I bought the first one in the series and loved it. I bought the other two, but had to wait until the third one was released. Well worth the wait. I like the way EH uses the characters and locations as chapter titles, keeps everyone on the same page (pardon the pun) and makes it not confusing. You learn so much about St. John and the surrounding islands, it's culture and breathtaking beauty. I would highly recommend this series.

This is the second book in this trilogy. I'm new to this writer but after reading the first book could not wait to start this book. Her description of the island and its characters are so descriptive that I felt I was actually there and the people my friends. As I closed the book on my kindle I opened up the third in the trilogy. If I could have given more than 5* I would have. I thank my friend in America for recommending me to this writer.

If this book had a taste, it would taste of conch fritters. If it had a colour, it would be the gleaming translucent turquoise of the Caribbean at Caneel Bay. Elin has such a gift for evoking setting through visual and culinary details.

I thought Rosie was the most intriguing character in the first Paradise novel, so I was delighted that we get to see how her romance with Russ developed through her diary entries.

The Baker/Mick/Ayers triangle was also a suspenseful narrative, with twists and turns right up until the end.

I don't understand why some readers are complaining about a cliffhanger? I'm really looking forward to the next book and am even planning a trip to St John!

I still hold out hope that Elin will write about Hurricane Irma, or a fictional version. Her talent for describing scenery and weather, and for building narrative tension, would ensure that such a novel would be a phenomenal read.
