“I love this book and I think the message is simple but very much needed with little kids.” A Rup Life

“An excellent reminder of how we should treat others and how we want to be treated…I hope to read it to every elementary classroom that I sub in this school year. Teachers could use this book as an excellent opener to talking about classroom rules, playground rules, and general kindness throughout the school. It would make a great gift to celebrate back-to-school!” Sincerely Stacey

“Javernick and Madden let you experience what it looks like to be on the other side of unkind words and it makes an impact. Powerful but not preachy, it’s a wonderful pro-kindness tool.” Story Monsters Ink

3.0 out of 5 stars The Story Itself is Good but the Illustrations are Very Negative
By Kristin B. on July 1, 2018
When I was scanning through the titles for July's First Reads, I was delighted to see a children's book. I have five-and-a-half year old twins who LOVE for me to read to them. I also was attracted to this title because the description states that it focuses on kindness. My kids' school emphasized kindness this year and being kind has always been something I strive for as well. I eagerly downloaded this title and read it to my kids this morning over breakfast.

What If Everybody Said That? by Ellen Javernick is a children's picture book that uses examples to get kids thinking about how what they do and say affects others. Throughout the story, the same girl is actually quite mean to other kids and adults call her out on it, stating "What if EVERYBODY said that?". It takes her a while but eventually she realizes the impact her words and actions have on others, which really are powerful and why we should always treat others how we want to be treated.

This story has colorful illustrations and about 22 pages to the story. It will not load onto an e-reader so I can't read it on my Kindle Oasis but it downloads just fine to my kids' Kindle Fires and on my Kindle app on my Android phone.

I've read this story five times myself and twice to my kids. My kids liked the story and we talked about what can happen if we say or do those things. Throughout each of the examples we talked about how the other person might feel if they were treated that way and what the girl should do instead.

The reason I'm giving this book three stars is because I have mixed feelings about it. The story itself is good and emphasizes what happens if everybody says that. I think it can get kids thinking about their words and actions because of the repetition. My problem is with the very negative illustrations. On almost every page, the kids and adults are glaring or yelling, which I don't feel go hand-in-hand with kindness. The main character is always glaring and being mean to others but other people also have similar looks on their faces. I was torn about what I should write so I asked my husband for his opinion. On the very first page, he commented that there is an awful lot of negativity. We both feel the story itself is good but the illustrations are so negative that it almost takes away from the emphasis on kindness. The more I read this story, the less I honestly liked it because of this. I've read a number of children's books on kindness and this is the only one that has ever had negative illustrations.

Overall, I liked the story but don't care much for the illustrations. I've included some pictures from the story so you can decide for yourself if you feel this story is a good purchase for you or not. I wish I would've enjoyed this story more because I feel it has great potential. I just wish the pictures matched the theme of kindness because I would've given it at least one more star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming. Some Will LOVE, Others Will HATE it. As For Me, Well...
By C Wm (Andy) Anderson on July 17, 2018
Amazon Prime Day had a special gift for Prime Members. In addition to our one free, early read Amazon First selection, we got the other five books for free.

So, of course, I took advantage of the opportunity. Further, I jumped into reading each book and will be posting reviews as soon as possible.

"What if Everybody Said That?" is a book intended to teach children to think before they utter hurtful thoughts. Sounds like a great idea, but might it actually lead to more rudeness by some kids? Will it reduce or, perhaps, increase bully attitudes?

Although I am no child psychologist (even experienced as I am, having raised two sons who taught me most of what I needed to know!), I do have experience as a trainer. Not of children, but of adults in the workplace. For years, primarily in three African countries, I did toolbox talks to teach safety. Bear with me, please, as this is really is pertinent to this review. I learned that whatever the subject taught, a percentage (perhaps 30, perhaps 50 percent) would, sometime during the following week, test the veracity of my lesson and, quite often, suffer the very injury I warned of.

My point is, some kids are likely to decide to do in public precisely what the author intends them not to do.

Secondly, the illustrations. On the one hand, the artwork is outstanding in technical terms. But, as at least one other reviewer stated, it often displays the negative side, which, of course, is the angle the writer wrote from.

Thirdly, and, for me, this is the only reason I reduced from five stars to four: When viewed on a PC, the book displays well and the legibility is great. When viewed on my iPad 5th Generation, however, the screen is not filled and, hence, the book underwhelms the reader. Children's books work best when kids are wowed by the art, which flows from edge to edge.

Please view the attached screen shots to understand what I wrote. Note that the pic showing in portrait format is a photo taken of how it shows on my iPad. The other shows it on my PC.

For some, the book will come across as preachy. Others might be offended that it takes a negative slant or that it is too pc (politically correct). I, however, will be showing this to children when they visit my wife and me. Not on my iPad, though, but on my PC or my Mac.

Four stars out of five.
