I purchased this book because it had very good reviews and it does reel you in and hooks you from the start but falls flat with a lack of any suprise. Della is a teacher and a happily married woman but she has a haunted past. Della's brother in another life she would like to forget , was a serial killer. When Della was young she seemed to be the only person that could pick up on his darkness and she tried to warn people but to no avail nothing came of it. No-one ever listened or took her serious, not even her parents. Adults wrote her off as a young jealous sister simply engaging in petty sibling rivalry.
So when a new student named Zoey starts school and exhibits the same traits and behavior as her brother did, she decides that she is going to do something about it. This time she is going to save people the way she was unable to save her brothers victims.
This book keeps you interested as it goes from past to present and the reader gets more tidbits along the way as to Della and her brothers past. What I didn't like about the book was there are no OMG moments no twists and turns, it's basically what you see is what you get in the premise. The entire story is pretty much laid out for you in the very beginning and the reader just gets more and more details as it goes along. The reason I gave it three stars is based on the reviews I read I was anticipating some kind of surprise, shock or "whoa" moment that never comes, just more background information on what you already know from the very beginning. Bottom line if you're looking for a mystery with twists and turns this is not it. To be completely honest I am surprised at all the great reviews and how many stars the book actually got. This book isn't thrilling and it's possible the author made it purposefully predictable and wanted the story to be more about redemption due to guilt more than wanting to shock and surprise the reader.
This kind of story is fine for some but I like some kind of surprise or twist with a story. I kept expecting some kind of thrilling plot twist but it never happened. This book is like watching a documentary where you already know the person is guilty and what they're guilty of but you watch anyway to get more specific details about their crimes, therefore it made a very anticlimactic ending.

Utterly compelling is the perfect description of this book, especially if you have ever known a psychopath. There are all degrees of psychopaths, but when one focuses his attention on you, you are never quite the same. This book triggered a lot of memories for me and reinforced my fear that the psychopath, who was once focused on my family may have been released from a hospital for the criminally insane due to the pandemic. It is good not to forget.

I saw all the hype around this book and had to buy it. I've now read it and don't understand why it got such great reviews. It is okay similar to one of those afternoon TV crime movies. But there was no great twist and I feel the character of Della was a bit bland. The toing and froing between the past and present was a bit annoying. The story in the past read well unlike the present where I feel "Mrs Mayfair" was asking for her trouble by sticking her nose into everything. I was waiting for a connection between the past and present like Zoey being the lovechild of Brian and one of his victims. The author could have done so much more with this story. There was very little character development and I can barely remember the names of any of them.

Sadly the ending was too predictable, silly and far-fetched. There was no exciting twist with the reader in shock at not having seen what was coming. It provided me with an evening of reading on a cold winter's evening. Nothing more, nothing less.

I've not read a book by this author before and I was recommended to read this by Bookoutre, who I thank because I enjoyed it. The characters are relatable and the plot is consistent. I've only given four stars because I thought their might have been a twist at the end, but there wasn't one. You know who the serial killer is and you know how it's going to end. It was still a good read and I'll definitely read more books from Miranda Smith.

I hugely enjoyed this book. Being a UK version of Pam, I found it interesting to compare behind the scenes of the US education/pastoral system as the plot developed - a bonus along the way to the unfolding of a very well written, engaging story. I never do spoilers but it is safe to say that the frustrations and fears of Della, both as youngster and adult, pivotal to the build up of tension, are utterly credible. The fallout for all concerned was truly painful and lives would be affected forever. A realistic ending with no quick fix, this is a book with depths that left me in reflective mood.

I really enjoyed the contrast between her younger self and the past evolvement of her brother's psychopathological behaviours alongside her present situation and the criminal trajectory of Zoey, her English student. It was realistic and absorbing and so gripping I read this book in a day. If you've ever seen the film ORPHAN or read THE PERFECT CHILD by Lucinda Berry, you'll love this!

I cannot wait to read Miranda's next title which I've already pre-ordered.

This was a nice read. Simple and engaging. There wasn't any real suspense and I was a little disappointed I didn't have more to sink my teeth into. Saying that I was desperate to know about the brother and it what happened. It's also a. guessing game of what is happening. We have all been in a position when we say something about someone and no one believes you and it makes you look like a bad person. I totally thought Danny was going to be secretly evil and it would have a big twist at the end.
