I watched this recently with my 14 year old daughter, who also liked it. I remember when the movie came out someone told me "If you like Tina Turner, you'll love her. If you don't like her, you will." I think this still stands. There are a few scenes that are hard to watch--rape and domestic violence-- but with a little discussion, it was okay for my early teen. The movie is incredibly well done, and the music is outstanding. It was my first Lawrence Fishburn movie and it took me a really long time to like him--he played Ike Turner so very well. Angela Bassett is outstanding.

What’s Love Got to Do With It is a biopic of Tina Turner played by Angela Bassett. Like similar films it takes the biggest hits from her career and mixes it with her life. One of the major differences was that Turner didn’t go through the usual addiction problems like in other movies such as Ray and Rocketman. Instead she was in an abusive relationship with her husband Ike Turner played by Laurence Fishburne. The movie touches on the cycle of violence women get caught in by being beaten or verbally abused, blaming themselves, making up and then repeating the process all over again. It’s the reason it’s so hard for them to get out.

Bassett really shines in this film which made her a bona fide star. She was also buff as hell as you could see her muscles throughout the film.

It all makes for a compelling story of survival mixed in with some great music.

A movie everyone should watch.

When I was young I use to watch this and my mother use to always tell me that her mother( my grandmother) could never watch this as it was ToI much for her to handle cause she wanted to hurt Ike from the TV screen, along with my grandmother having the same name as Anna Mae. It’s a trigger for some people and for some it’s just something they are watching, but the abuse Tina dealt with was for too long and when she finally stood up for herself she began to live again. I believe most should experience watching so maybe you could get a good message out of it as well to be strong and come out still on top.

I am a huge fan of Tina Turner. I've grown up with her song. The best song of mine is Private Dancer. Whenever I hear that song, I feel her agony and pain suffering from everything she suffered from her husband and I truely admire her endurance and even forgiveness.
I know already about her story through mass media and the movie was not all new. But seeing her story again was not all cliche.
She met Ike Turner at a concert where he was singing and she had a chance to sing his song. She sang most beautifully and Ike fell in love with her song at once. Then he married with her.
They teamed up and Ike used her as a singer and made her sing that he composed. He used her every minute of it without mercy. He even beat her if he has to to train her, to make her sing better. For him, she is just a singing robot. To oil her, he has to beat her.
She tries to love him and tries to make him satistied. She waited and waited till he comes back as a good husband but he never did.
Finally she ran away from him when he met the white guy who was a well known producer who admire her song.
That is the moment she had a chance to have a debut to be a solo singer.
She then shines more then ever. The movie finishes when she sings one of the biggest hit single What's Love got to do with it? But she had more his songs, I mean whay more songs in the future.
On the other hand, Ike becomes nobody.
That's how it goes. The good guy shines and the bad guy being punisheed.
Like a fairy tale.
There's a good world exist still.
It's a small little movie and the leading actress was way more beautiful then the actual Tina Turner but It was ok. IThe movie is a fantasy after all Laurence Fishburne who acted as Ike Turner acted beautifully. He has two faces, a lover man and an evil. He was always a good actor.
I am glad that I've seen this movie. The only thing I wanted to see more was her singing my favourite song PRIVATE DANCER.

I was legitimately ticked off at Lawrence Fishburn after seeing this when it first came out; he played Ike Turner so well that he became the recipient of my and a lot of other people's anger. Angela Basset is phenomenal as always, and the writing makes you feel like you're living the story. I re-watched it today for the music, but forgot that this particular sing-a-long was the soundtrack to an emotional roller coaster.

There's tons of drama, heartache, and pain; but ultimately this is a story of triumph. Btw Tina Turner at 79 years old (in 2019) still looks amazing!

I've seen the movie many times and I once owned the biography ... She is by far one of the strongest females ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Ever ! I can not imagine what she endured in that unhealthy marriage to the late "Ike Turner" ... and even worse the mental,emotional and physical torture that she lived with for the years now. They say that women who suffered at the hands of "sicko's" like Ike Turner ..it personally affect's them ... I am happy that her life turned out and her DREAMS ...came true ..! What a Legendary artist she is ....

Wonderful acting and great screenplay from Touchstone Pictures (Disney) based on the international bestseller, “I, Tina” by Tina Turner (to which a follow up book will be published in 2018). But, the movie doesn’t begin to describe the horror the Queen of Rock & Roll endured, even as an early child to become the force that is Tina Turner, the most successful female rock singer of all time and who is in the Guinness Book of World Records 4 times. The movie is great, but you should also read the book.

The DVD disc: "What's Love Got To Do With It" is a beautiful 118 minute studio reenactment of the ups and downs of the in and out experiences which led to the actual start --then, finally, the fascinating career success of a famous R&B vocalist: Tina Turner (Angela Bassett) and the abusive life she lived with Ike Turner (Laurence Fishburne). This film is very dramatic, emotional, and carrie's many segments full of action! You'll enjoy making it a part of you collection of classics. ☆☆☆☆
