I am a female who has loved fantasy fiction since picking up the Hobbit in a 1976 High School English class. I've read many authors and read the first four WOT books when they were first released. I decided to finish the series all these years later but obviously needed to revisit the first four. I'm not sure what has happened between then and now, but the books are not nearly as good as I remember them to be. Don't get me wrong, the world building is terrific and the story line is interesting and leaves you wanting to know what happens....but the dialogue is really bad... The way the female characters talk is laughable. I'm sure my age and years of relearning over and over what it means to be an adult woman have changed how I view these books. But I've found my ability to enjoy books whose female characters (no matter how powerful) still wistfully yearn after the male characters has all but disappeared. The women in these books are so one dimensional . All are beautiful with lustrous long hair and tight bodices. These books are loaded with interesting characters and the female characters are powerful, but they still pout and scold and dress seductively....Ugh... And the main character cannot settle on the love of one woman so he is shared by three (all of whom are more than willing because they love him sooo much and couldn't bear life without him). Sorry, it's just a little too much for me.... but if you can get past the weird characterization of women and you'd love a good trip into an epic new world, I'm sure you will love WOT

I was hesitant to start such a long series, but I heard so many good things I decided to jump in and give it a try. I have now read the first three books and bought the next three, although not in the same format! These books were very unwieldy to read and hard on my arthritic hands. I bought the new ones on my kindle. If you want the actual book I would advise the large -size paperbacks or the hardcovers if you can afford them. That aside, I did really enjoy these books. Jordan writes with a lot of character development which I love. He also is quite descriptive in general, but I also enjoy that. Others, however, might find him a tad slow to read. Having only read three so far, I'm not an expert on this series, but I have enjoyed getting to know the characters and their motivations. I like his writing style and definitely am interested in what is happening with our little group (which does keep getting bigger as we go along). I can't wait to start the next book, and this lockdown we are in right now has certainly helped me have the time to read! That's the ONLY positive thing about the whole situation I see. Happy reading!

Wooden, two dimensional characters, a two dimensional world, and uni-dimensional motivations for both Team Good and Team Evil.

I'm not sure how or why this series from Jordan got so popular - I was hoping to jump on the bandwagon, but his storytelling is just so clearly 2nd rate compared to genuine masters like Zelazny (Amber) or Glen Cook (Black Company) or Jack Vance (Demon Princes) or so many others in the genre.

I bought the trilogy, was only able to make it through the first book. And that, barely. It's filled with so many "wait - what???' moments - straining suspension of disbelief and causing me to actively hope some of the protagonists got their heads handed to them - that I several times almost put it down partway through.

Might be OK for much younger readers (12? 13?) just getting into the fantasy genre, but again, why not go right for the top shelf writers and stories and just give this a miss entirely?

Early books pay homage to a Tolkien-esque journey, and truly comes into its own around book 4. Fantastic world building, and a handy glossary at the end of each book to help keep track of this massive world.

The carton quality of the covers has great quality for a mass market paperback but their size format is pretty weird they are too tall and not that wide so it will be a little tight to open up that spine. Regarding the contents inside the books, they are pretty much a full downgrade, the cover is dull and boring and also it has no maps at all and the color end-papers the original cover books had are nowhere to be seen. If you like the old covers (I really like those but they are out of stock in almost everywhere, some people say they are cheesy but they look very ''fantasy'' for me) get them, even though they are mass market paperbacks they offer more worth to their value. Or if you want to start collecting and preserving them just buy the hardcovers. But these editions are not that great.

If you've read the first three books in the WOT series I can't imagine you wouldn't want to read these. This specific set is the least expensive legal way I've found of getting these books (other than receiving them as a present.) And with the box they come in they make a nice gift. I doubt the recipient would notice the box if they've finished the first three books though.

Even though the author does a nice job of catching the reader up on background from prior books needed to follow what's going on, it would be a shame to not read the books in order. That's where having them available in lots of three comes in handy; that and reducing the expense of acquiring the whole series.

I'm not going to write a long review. I like this series, but some times the descriptions get very long winded when I am impatient and want it to get to the point. I think I might like the Audible version.
If you are watching the TV series, do not expect it to be the same. They have twisted everything in the story until it is hardly recognizable. As I watched it on TV, my most common comment was "never happened that way". The books are waaaaay better.

The books are narrow and thick so very clumsy to hold and printing was done with the printer running low on magenta it seems. I will not buy the rest of the books in this format.
