The discs come in a plastic snap case. The discs play fine.

You'll like When Calls the Heart if you like any of the following: Anne of Green Gables (1985), Anne of Green Gable the Sequel (1987), Ann of Avonlea (1975), or Anne with an E (2017- ). All of these series are great family shows, safe for viewers of all ages. You don't have to worry about sex scenes, swearing, or excessive violence.

If you’re looking for other good stuff to watch consider miniseries like The Astronauts Wives Club (2015), Band of Brothers (2001), Frank Herbert’s Dune (2000), Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune (2003), Into the West (2005), Lonesome Dove (1989), Manhattan (2014-2015), Return to Lonesome Dove (1993), Pride and Prejudice (1995), Taken (2002) and The 10th Kingdom (2000), which are all terrific because they have clear beginnings that establish an objective, then strong middles and conclusive endings where the goal is achieved, like a good novel.

Other shows I’ve really enjoyed include Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), Breaking Bad (2008-2013), Cowboy Bebop (1998), Downton Abbey (2010-2015), Firefly (2002), Game of Thrones (2011-2019), Granite Flats (2013-2015), The IT Crowd (2006-2013), Jericho (2006-2008), Lost (2004-2010), Merlin (2008-2012), The Prisoner (1967-1968), Rome (2005-2007), Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011), Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010), Stargate: SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate: Atlantis (2004-2009), Star Trek (1966-1969) and Star Trek Voyager (1995-2001). I didn’t list any contemporary series I’m following that don’t have an end date yet, not conducive to binge watching from beginning to finish.

If you like reading try some of my favorite fantasy and sci-fi authors: Richard Adams, Palo Bacigulupi, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, and Andy Weir.

This is the most darling, engaging, and "addicting" TV show that fills a large void in today's risque, edgy media landscape: a beautifully filmed and acted family-oriented show which reminds viewers that time-tested values and virtues such as honesty, kindness, and forgiveness are just as relevant and needed today as they were back in 1910 when Season 1 takes place. Even though this is a family show appropriate for all ages, the chemistry and simmering passion between leads Erin Krakow (wealthy school teacher Elizabeth Thatcher) and Daniel Lissing (Mountie Jack Thornton) are hot. hot. HOT! I have not seen such perfect casting in years!

Lori Loughlin ("Full House") also stars as the "soul" of the small town, and wise mother figure. She exudes warmth, strength, and beauty, and heads up a strong cast that includes Jack Wagner ("General Hospital") as a do-it-my-way police investigator, and other terrific Canadian actors. The fans of the show call themselves "Hearties" and interact freely with the stars via social media and at a "Hearties Family Reunion" held in Vancouver, BC, where fans can meet the cast and tour the set.

35,000+ fans have joined the Facebook fan group, many of whom stumbled upon this show "accidentally" while searching through Amazon Prime, became addicted after the first episode (due in part to the unbelievable chemistry of Krakow and Lissing!), binge-watched all available seasons, and are eagerly waiting for Season 4 to air, beginning with a Christmas special on December 25, 2016. People of all different backgrounds, political views, religions, and cultures love this show -- somehow it bridges ideology and lifestyle, and has brought people together from all over the world. You will absolutely fall in love with "When Calls the Heart"!

4.5 stars! A binge-worthy respite from reality
Verified purchase
This series is worth buying because it is SO much better when we can watch all seasons continuously without so many commercial interruptions (and I hear a 6th season is promised, which makes me happy). I would give it a full 5 stars except that the hairdos, makeup, and a lot of the fashions are not even attempting to be authentic to the 1900's era, which I found very distracting. That being said, I wouldn't have purchased all 5 seasons if those weaknesses weren't overcome by a captivating love story - by the end, I think we all want Daniel and Erin to be in a strong, happy marriage in real life. :) So I'm happy to have this Janette Oke-(loosely) based program as a keeper in my video library and will return to it in the years to come. (And I think the best actual acting may come from Daniel - this mate is all Aussie, and yet his character's North American accent is flawless. Good job, Mountie Jack! :)

"When Calls the Heart"-- A Diamond In The Rough! *EDITED Since Ep. 12*
Verified purchase
First off, I haven't read any of the Janette Oke book series this show is named after (although from what I've read, it's not actually based on the namesake's lead characters, but rather a new book spin-off entitled "Where Courage Calls").
Nor did I watch the pilot movie beforehand (FYI, the lead actors aren't even the same).

(EDITED): Since my initial impression/review of ep's 1-4, I decided to increase my rating from 4 to 5 stars. I feel that the story lines from episodes 5-12 really take off; actually some of the best moments of the season are in those episodes (episodes 9 & 12 are especially phenomenal)!!!

If I'm being totally honest, there are a few over dramatic, and somewhat predictable moments (*slight SPOILER*: for instance when the hero "Jack" is ALWAYS there to save the day-- seriously, pretty soon they're going to have to sew an "S" onto his uniform because he's the Edwardian version of "Clark Kent"!).
But really, what does that matter when each episode has an underlying positive message, AND it's clean family friendly entertainment (a rarity these days)?!

It's definitely reminiscent of "Christy" (one of my favorite, but sadly short-lived TV series in the mid 90's), "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman", and perhaps a little of "Anne of Green Gables", or "Little House on the Prairie".
My one real complaint, is that music is constantly being played during much of the dialogue and it competes with their voices (so unless you have closed caption on, you might have to replay it, and/or constantly adjust the volume)! Unfortunately, other Hallmark productions have this problem too...

I conclusion, I highly recommend this for anyone who loves this genre, or are who are simply looking for something decent for the whole family to watch!

Old-school values, sweet story
Verified purchase
As the mother of a little girl, I am so glad this exists. It's nice to have a show we can watch together in which she gets exposed to an alternative way of life where relationships, patience and diligence are key concepts. I should note that we are Christian, so the Christian references don't go counter to our believes (but if the viewer is not, know they are in here, but are pretty mild).. Also, the slow-moving and wholesome romance is a great for her to see unfold-no hot-and-heavy stuff, but a sweet, innocent blossoming. Something I wish for her one day. She loves this and we love to watch it together.

The characters are fun to get to know and follow. The backdrop of the unrefined west shows my daughter how fortunate she is to have modern-day conveniences (though I don't think they exactly nail the costumes and mannerisms-this is no Downton Abby). The lessons are based on good, universal values. Thumbs up for family viewing.

Awesome Series

Wholesome drama series that pulls you in. Each episode deals with a new story, often introducing a bit of real history. It has the ingredients of every good series..an ongoing chemistry between the local Mounty and the school teacher that has moved to this poor mining town to impact the childrens lives...and the daily challenges she will face leaving the comforts of a wealthy life back east. It is heart warming to experience the struggles of an old mining town, the loss of many husbands and sons when the mine collapsed and all the many affects it created on individuals. It has the town bad guy who is out for himself and making money. The stagecoach that brings a story with each passenger coming into town. The strength of the people, their faith, the unity that brings them together to get through tough spots, a love triangle just when it seems our two love birds may get together. Really a great series!
