New York State Trooper Tristan Reid normally didn’t answer his phone when he didn’t recognize the number, but sometimes he liked to have a little fun with the tell marketers. However, the person on the other end was no salesman. Having remembered Brooke’s grandfather, he goes to the house out of respect. What he finds is a beautiful woman who is way out of his league, but with a problem, he can help solve. Together, they unravel a fifty-year-old mystery that could solve all of Brooke’s financial problems, giving her the freedom to flip the house and move on…or perhaps she wants to stay put...with Tristan.

I first started writing while carting my kids to one hockey rink after the other, averaging 170 games per year between 3 kids in 2 countries and 5 states. My first book, IN TWO WEEKS was originally published in 2007. In 2010 I helped form a publishing company (Cool Gus Publishing) with NY Times Bestselling Author Bob Mayer where I ran the technical side of the business through 2016.
I’m currently enjoying the next phase of my life…the empty NESTER! My husband and I spend our winters in Jupiter, Florida and our summers in Rochester, NY. We have three amazing children who have all gone off to carve out their places in the world, while I continue to craft stories that I hope will make you readers feel good and put a smile on your face.

State Trooper Tristan Reed wants to know what it is he does wrong when he talks to women. He strikes a bargain with Brooke. She wants help with a mystery surrounding an old fashioned key and an illegible note in exchange for assistance with helping him to be more articulate with women.
It doesn’t matter if Brooke’s grandfather wanted to get the two together before he died. It doesn’t matter that the rich people of the little town are hell bent on making her and Tristan’s lives a living hell. It doesn’t matter that someone wants her dead and gone…
Or at least it shouldn’t matter…
A very well written book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was sucked in immediately into the story and I had a hard time to put it down when I needed to do those pesky adult things. I would recommend this book for anyone that would like a mystery/romance book.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Why only three stars you ask? I would have probably given it 4.5 stars if there were not so many mistakes. I can't believe an editor or proofreader looked over the manuscript and didn't catch the over 45 mistakes that I did.
I have mentioned this in other reviews...please, please, please have someone check your work. It would have made for an even better read if it had even half the mistakes.
She lost everything when her boyfriend was caught cheating and she expressed her feelings of the event and wound up with a court date. Brook lost her job due to this.
Maybe a new start in Lake George is what she needed. Others in Lake Shore had other ideas. Strange things began to happen. Who wanted her gone. If you love suspense and hot heroes than I guarantee you will love this book.
Brooke Fowler’s life has been turned upside down, and is currently, as of very recently, now between jobs. After her grandfather passes she learns she is inheriting his house. So with nowhere else to go since she and her live-in boyfriend recently split up, she heads there, to the community where she spent time as a child. After her new home is burglarized multiple times, she calls the number of a State Trooper whose business card is tacked to her grandfather’s board. That number happens to belong to Tristan Reid, a friend of her late grandfather’s. After Brooke’s unique ritual to honor her lost loved ones, the two strike an unusual bargain. Tristan agrees to help her look into why her new home has been broken into and help her solve the mystery surrounding some items left by her grandfather. In return, she agrees to help him with a personal problem. Tristan seems to think he has trouble with women, since he can’t find one worth settling down with. Brooke, who has sworn off men, thinks she sees the root of Tristan’s problem and can help him, while she makes plans to flip the house and move on. What ensues is a story full of intrigue, excitement, and romance as the two try to solve a fifty year old family mystery spanning three generations, while someone goes to great lengths to prevent that from happening.
Tristan is such a wonderfully flawed character who’s suffered a great personal loss, and to some he comes off as awkward. Personally, I thought his lack of a filter was quite funny. The banter between he and Brooke actually made me laugh out loud more than once. And he is just as sexy as he is direct and blunt, and lives by the unspoken code of honor of a gentleman. Brooke has suffered no shortage of loss herself and is now on her own with no known family left. She plans to take this time working out her legal troubles, getting her temper back in check, and figuring out where to go from here, while helping Tristan find the right girl for him. But what if Tristan thinks she is the right one? These two were so great together, even if they both fought accepting that fact. It was such fun following along as they circled around each other. While Brooke only plans to give into the physical chemistry between them, Tristan has other plans. And what chemistry that is! These two are HOT together! And despite Tristan’s determination that he’s awkward with women, he’s one determined and very skilled lover.
As much as I liked Brooke and Tristan, I also enjoyed all of the secondary characters. Tristan’s parents are great, and quite wise to their son’s ways. Tristan is also surrounded by great friends, mostly other Troopers and their families, who all come together when one is in need. I was sad to learn that this is the last book in this series, especially since I just discovered it. But that means at least now I’ve got a great new series to start back at the beginning. Each of the first six books looks just as interesting as this one.
I truly enjoyed When A Stranger Calls and highly and enthusiastically recommend it. It is definitely going on my keeper shelf. Anyone who enjoys romance really should give this book a try. Ms. Talty does not disappoint. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this title.
Mystery, suspense and a deep intense connection between two strangers make up the next story in the New York State Trooper series.
Tristan knew about Brooke before Brooke knew about him. Brooke's grandfather befriends Tristan and thought they would be a perfect match. But, instead of a planned dinner for introductions, Brooke meets Tristan when she returns to take care of her grandfather's funeral which, occurs after a devasting week of losing her boyfriend, her job and possibly her sanity. Unfortunately, the bad luck continues as soon as Brooke arrives at her grandfather's house. Her whole world gets turned upside down with break-ins, lawsuits, and a threat on her life. And, through it all, Tristan is there by her side lending support and comfort. He is so charming and adorable in his blunt, awkward way that Brooke finds him irresistible especially, since they apparently share some deep connection that is unexplainable.
This is a really engrossing story that keeps you wondering how many things could go wrong for Brooke and will justice ever be served. I thoroughly enjoy reading Tristan and Brooke's story. However, I was a bit disappointed in the ending. I thought it was too abrupt and underwhelming considering the intense drama at the end. Without trying to give anything away, I was confused on Wendell III's reaction to Brooke being at her grandfather's. If he did not know Brooke's family secret, why was he so bent on destroying Brooke's life? And, in the process of ruining his own?
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
