There are monsters in this world.
And they used to be us.
Now it's time to euthanize to survive in a hospice where Emily, a woman haunted by her past, only wants to do her job and be the best mother possible.
Post-infection Chicago. Christmas.
Inside The Hospice, Emily and her fellow nurses do their rounds. Here, men and women live out their final days in comfort, segregated from society, and are then humanely terminated before fate turns them into marrow-craving monsters known as ‘Smilers.’ Outside these imposing walls, rabid protesters swarm with signs, caught up in the heat of their hatred.
Emily, a woman haunted by her past (and a really strong female protagonist), only wants to do her job and be the best mother possible. But in a world where mortality means nothing, where guns are drawn in fear and nobody seems safe anymore – at what cost will this pursuit come? And through it all, the soon to be dead remain silent, ever smiling. Such is their curse.
This emotional horror novel comes from two of horror’s freshest voices, and puts a new spin on an eternal topic: the undead. In the spirit of George A Romero meets Jack Ketchum, Where the Dead Go to Die it is an unforgettable epilogue to the zombie genre, one that will leave you shaken and questioning right from wrong…even when it’s the only right left.
It won't be long before that snow-speckled ground will be salted by blood.
This Christmas Horror novel is perfect for fans of grief horror, emotional reads, and psycholocial suspense thrillers.
Proudly brought to you by Crystal Lake Publishing – Tales from the Darkest Depths
Interview with the authors:
What makes Where the Dead Go to Die different than any other zombie novel out there?
Aaron Dries: The scabs of the zombie genre have been picked at for years. But here, we rip off the old flesh to make way for the new. But there's a lot of blood in between. We've done something different, something challenging, and honest. It's something I couldn't have done alone.
Mark Allan Gunnells: It's an original take on a standard horror trope. We approach the story from a much more emotional place, the horror coming less from the zombies themselves and more from a personal experience with the horror of death and loss and guilt.
How did you experience the process of writing a novel with another author?
Aaron Dries: This was the first time I have collaborated, and I couldn't have asked for a better partner-in-crime than Mark. It took a lot of trust and honesty. I was constantly surprised by the process. Mark would write a sentence that would send my imagination reeling. It was such a fast, living process, ironic considering the undead subject material.
Mark Allan Gunnells: I love the art of collaboration. When it is done right, and I feel Aaron and I did it right, the result is a story that truly neither author could have written alone. It's a blending of our voices and talents to create something wholly unique.
Why should readers take a chance on this suspense thriller?
Aaron Dries: Because this really is something different. It's a fiercely political work. It's about conservatism run amok, about humanity in an inhumane world. And considering the bureaucratic climate in which we currently live, I think it's rather timely.
Mark Allan Gunnells: Because we're offering a fresh and original take that is full of passion and emotion and suspense.

Editorial Reviews
Review
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Where the Dead Go to Die is the kind of zombie tale horror fans and horror writers always hope for - something original. Aaron Dries and Mark Allan Gunnells have taken the worn-out tropes and turned them inside out." - JG Faherty, Thriller- and Bram Stoker-nominated author of The Cure, The Burning Time, and Ghosts of Coronado Bay.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Two authors, both with a strong talent for characters and emotion. They take a familiar lump of clay-Zombies and what they pummel and prod and pull and mold turns out to be a story that is anything but hackneyed. It is a story of survival and loss. About grieving and striving. It is honest and painful and scary. It reeks of carrion, like we all do." - John Boden, author of JEDI SUMMER and DOMINOES.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "WHERE THE DEAD GO TO DIE is one of the best books I've ever read--and this is coming from a jaded horror fan who tends to avoid books about the 'Z' word like the plague (if you'll pardon the expression)! Dries and Gunnells have written a timely tale of the living dead that is not only horrifying, but heartbreaking on so many levels. If this one doesn't leave you in tears, you must be among the infected already. Bringon the Crowners . . . ." - James Newman (author of ODD MAN OUT, ANIMOSITY, and UGLY AS SIN)
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Just when you thought the undead had been bled dry, Dries and Gunnells have created an original, compelling novel that breathes new life into the genre once again. Highly recommended." - Patrick Lacey, author of DREAM WOODS and SLEEP PARALYSIS

About the authors
Mark Allan Gunnells loves to tell stories. He has since he was a kid, penning one-page tales that were Twilight Zone knockoffs. He likes to think he has gotten a little better since then. He loves reader feedback, and above all he loves telling stories. He lives in Greer, SC, with his husband Craig A. Metcalf.
Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.

Emily is one of those care givers. She’s there to help them, give comfort and support, and protect them from others and themselves. She thinks she’s an ordinary woman. A single mother trying to make ends meet. I think she is brave. There’s still a risk of infection if careless. She watches as the night screams fade and the patients change. become the smilers, right before the end. Doesn’t shy from the dirty work. She’s already been through it on a much more personal level.
Where The Dead Go To Die is what I call a quiet horror story. It’s those hushed little scenes in between the ordinary ones that make the most impact. I know they have importance and stay in the back of mind, to be brought out later when the authors uncloak more.
I was so swept up in this story. The political machinations and moral ramifications bounced around in my head. The authors made me forget this was fiction and made me really think, Think how I would navigate this world, How I would feel about the smilers. Whether I might be one of those I looked down upon in the story or one of those I looked up to. How could I know? That questioning was very deep. Several times I actually stopped reading to contemplate what I’d just experienced.
And all through this quiet horror story, I knew bad things were coming. The quiet would be shattered by things horrific. The infrastructure would crumble. Things wouldn’t be contained. And the horror would become a roar.
This was an original and engrossing spin on zombie stories. I came away from it thinking I had to see what else these two authors had written. And I’m still catching myself thinking about what occurred in these pages.
The main character Emily starts work at a Chicago hospice, harbouring a tragic past & trying to take care of her teenage daughter. When an infected teenage boy is placed under her care, the stage is set for a tragic tale of innocence lost & what it means to be human in a disease ravaged society.
The book paints a post-outbreak world with broad strokes while focusing on Emilys’ day to day life working in the hospice, watching the slow degradation of infected humans into zombies. Once the cards are set for an explosive finale, events play out in an unpredictable & heartbreaking way - dark & affecting. I don’t think I’ve ever got so many feels from a zombie story before.
Thematically there are echoes of AIDS & the stigma that was attached to it in the early years of the disease. The Anti-Zombie protesters that surround the hospice day in & out are redolent of the religious right (pro-life / anti LGBTQ types), hateful & unsympathetic to the infected & their plight - even their own family members.
Where the Dead Go To Die is a slow build, but never dull, horrific & full of heart, remaining focused on its characters & drawing us in to this world before unleashing hell.
Highly recommended.

You follow protagonist Emily doing what she must to support her family, working in a hospice that cares for the infected. The pacing of the book flows nicely, giving you glimpses into Emily's past as the story progresses. A false sense of security allows you to feel for the characters and bond with them, but when things escalate it will get your heart rate going.
A good read, but I kind of wish there was a little more story towards the end.
