The first 13 chapters revolve around the World Finals of the Professional Bull Riders in Las Vegas, where our hero (Casey Bozeman) works as a bullfighter, putting his life in danger to ensure the safety of each bull rider. Our heroine (Val Champion) and her sisters bring two bulls from their Arizona ranch to the finals, hoping Whirlwind and Whiplash will score well in the rankings. Val recently came home to Arizona after spending nine years in Los Angeles, trying and failing to become a movie star. Instead, she got sucked into a life of alcohol and drugs, breaking laws and living with a "runner" for the Las Vegas mob. But she's never forgotten Casey Bozeman--the man she loved and left behind when she chose to pursue her Hollywood dreams.
Naturally, Val and Casey run into each other at the World Finals, and their old attraction resurfaces, especially when Val admits she's being threatened by someone in the Las Vegas underworld. Eighteen months earlier, she'd hidden nearby while her mob runner boyfriend (Lenny) was murdered by the mob's top hit man, Dimitri. Though she heard the whole thing, and even checked Lenny's body afterwards, did she report this murder to the police? Heck, no. She ran back to Los Angeles and a life of addiction, until she was clean and sober enough to move home to Arizona four months ago.
Now Val is back in Las Vegas, and Dimitri wants to eliminate the woman who can tie him to Lenny's murder. She knows he's stalking her, but does she go to the police? Of course not. Believing the police can't be trusted, she turns to Casey for protection, and he's quite willing to keep her safe in his hotel room and in his bed. (Their sex scenes don't generate much steam.) When she finally summons the nerve to speak to an assistant district attorney, he tells her she's on her own--they don't have the resources to protect her. Seriously? Does the mob control every law enforcement agency in Las Vegas? (There's a confusing subplot about Dimitri and his plans to overthrow the mob's top boss, but it's not worth the rehash.)
Anyway, Val and Casey have more sex, and he discovers her C-section scars. She admits that she had a baby in California and gave him up for adoption, but she refuses to say more. The baby was Casey's, of course, and this is where I stopped caring about Val. She left the man she supposedly loved, ran off to Hollywood, gave their precious baby boy to strangers, and kept Casey in the dark for nine years! What kind of woman would do something like that? Ugh!
When Casey is injured by a bull on the last night of the World Finals, Val takes him to her family's ranch in Arizona to recuperate, but he leaves when she tells him the truth about their baby. Who can blame him? His departure forces Val to rely on her own devices to protect herself and her family. Although she's certain that Dimitri--a professional assassin--will track her to the ranch and try to kill her, she refuses to involve the local police. After all, she has a pistol and a twelve-gauge shotgun. What could possibly go wrong? I'm not saying.
On the plus side, I enjoyed the bull riding competition in Las Vegas, and the final scenes at the ranch held my interest. I especially liked Casey--a big, strong man with a loving heart. In my opinion, he deserved someone better than Val Champion. Two stars overall for this disappointing tale.
The only part that through me off a little was the ending. However, the author brought in a lot of characters to help her readers understand more about the riders, trainers, and those that protect the riders during a bull ride. Then, we have the bulls themselves. Her story captures love, determination, faith, family ties and corruption. A little mystery ans suspense. A good book, by a great author.
I loved this book! Well worth investing your time in reading the series.
You can hear the sounds, and smell the rodeo as Whiplash bring the riders to their knees. The plot twists, the intrigue, and the conclusion help to bring the characters in this story alive.
I can't wait for Tess' story!!!
