“Whisper In The Night” has teenage girls being strangely stalked and kidnapped and murdered, and is very disturbing. As a police procedural it is very well done, although I’m wondering why all the girls (who say they had dreams of a man being in their bedroom at night) weren’t warned or watched more carefully. There is some confusion also about the murdered girls having left their houses themselves. The first girl murdered appeared to be kidnapped from her room, but also leaving her house on her own before being kidnapped!? Also the author takes a cheap shot at POTUS that doesn’t even make sense.
This is a much anticipated latest book of this series that falls a little short of expectations. It’s still an enjoyable and entertaining read, though.
I really enjoyed this fast-paced, action-oriented procedural, with deadly traps, staged death scenes, psychopathology discussions, weird autopsy findings, and killer’s cat-and-mouse games with the police.
What I didn’t like: Sheriff Jenna Alton’s tentative interior-monologue, and unsteady behavior makes her less believable as a leader. When I read about women sheriffs, I shouldn’t have to grit my teeth and growl: “Get it together, will you? Cowgirl up!” Here’s an eye-roller: She’s targeted by the killer, but she goes into her house and doesn’t clear the rooms.
Recommended for mystery and police procedural fans.
