Product Description
John Candy is bigger, better and more bumbling than ever as the hilarious Harry Crumb - a big-hearted, soft-headed private eye and mix-up master of disuise. When Harry, the last of the great sleuthing Crumbs - and the last person in the firm to ever get an assignment - finally gets a shot at a frontpage kidnapping, it's only because his beady-eyed boss, Eliot Draisen (Jeffrey Jones), doesn't wantthe case solved. At stake is the gorgeous daughter of multi-millionaire P.J. Downing, a $10 millionransom, and Eliot's hot-to-trot mistress (Annie Potts). Attired in a bizarre array of goofball disguises, from a Hungarian hairdresser to a hefty housewife, Harry is bound, gagged and determined to crack the case and prove that when it comes to crime, he's one Crumb that won't be swept under the carpet.

Mill Creek Entertainment brings the film to blu-ray in a bare bones release featuring a cool VHS retro style slipcover with the original poster art on the bluray sleeve itself.
The film is presented in its original 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio utilizing the AVC codec with a beefy bit rate usually hovering around 30 mbps and getting up into the mid 30's during some busy sections so no compression artifacts are seen. Detail is solid with nice color saturation along with good contrast and black levels. It does seem that some digital sharpening was used though as the film occasionally has a bit of a processed look at times and some shimmering occurs here and there but this only popped up during a couple of scenes. There is also some slight telecine wobble visible but is not too big of an issue. More than likely this is just an older HD master but all things considered the film looks good. Audio is in 2 channel lossless sound.
No extras or English subtitles were included. In fact the movie just starts right up and does not even feature a main menu though the 90 minute film is split up into 10 chapters.
For a budget priced release for a little less than 8 dollars currently, this comes recommended for fans of John Candy. While it is frustrating that Mill Creek Entertainment did not include English subtitles or even the film's trailer, the film still does look and sound good overall on its long overdue bluray debut.
The movie on the other hand is great. I didn't want to put ONE STAR for the technical aspect because it's misleading, and for an underrated movie like this, which was basically John Candy's Fletch, I think a three star rating fits. He's not hilarious in the movie. There aren't die laughing sequences like in Fletch where Candy's inept modern gumshoe wears disguises to fool various people while searching for the model daughter (she's literally a model, and daughter) of a millionaire whose wife is cheating with... a few people, but... that's a spoiler...
The funniest scenes are very subtle, and involves Candy mispronouncing a word or being awkward in front of people, or polite to rude people, etc. They used to play this movie on cable all the time, and it's not dated and is a fun 90-plus minutes. Shawnee Smith is the cute not gorgeous jealous little sister who helps Candy; if the latter weren't so big and fun, you'd think there would be a taboo romance.
Anyhow, beware of the slipcover. Or rather, of the blu ray cover, which the cover here isn't. The movie, though, is worth the very low price. That alone... a Blu Ray under 8 bucks... is why I didn't complain and get a refund...
I had never even heard of "Who's Harry Crumb?" before, and I was looking to take a break from my usual Asian movie watching to enjoy some good old american, and in John Candy's case, Canadian, comedy to kiss 2020 goodbye. I got nearly 20 movies for this send off, and I'm having a lot of fun watching through them all, but only one movie has, so far, left me with a pleasant sort of "wow" feeling upon completing it.
That movie was "who's Harry Crumb?", and it's a new personal favorite of mine.
John Candy is hilarious as Harry Crumb, a lousy private eye who gets a case about the kidnapping of a millionaire's daughter. Between his goofy disguises and expert physical comedy, Candy is a true delight as Harry Crumb.
Annie Potts does an excellent job as the millionaire's wife, and I thought there were enough little twists and turns in the plot to make it a truly enjoyable film.
At PG-13 it's not quite family fare, but there's nothing I'd consider to be worth condemning the film, and for under ten bucks it was truly a steal, even without the addition of any special features. I also liked the vhs style slip cover, as it looks good and easily fits in with my other blurays.
All in all, this movie was something special for me from start to finish. Definitely a true classic of a hidden gem. -A.J.
