―Tara Mohr, author of Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead
A truly brilliant book. Jennifer Louden is warm, down to earth, and thoroughly practical as she explores the profound question of what matters most to each of us. It’s quite stunning how she weaves together personal stories, deep reflections, inspiration, and immediately useful actions. A gem.
―Rick Hanson, PhD, author of Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness
I ended my own book with the words, ‘Now what?’ When I picked up Jennifer Louden’s book, I felt as if it were a follow-up to my own question. Why Bother? spoke to me as if I were speaking to myself (in a loving voice, instead of the jerky one) and it has become my guide, my map, my bible, my confidante. I want everyone I know to own a copy as tattered as mine.
―Jennifer Pastiloff, author of On Being Human
In Why Bother? Jennifer Louden shows with great honesty that feeling what is ours to feel is how we endure our way into a more authentic dream where who we are is more than enough. Without being prescriptive, this book is a strong and sensitive companion on the path of becoming fully human. It will help you unravel your entanglements and live.
―Mark Nepo, author of Drinking from the River of Light and The Book of Awakening
This book is a revelation. Why Bother? woke me up from my creative slumber and revitalized the desire I had pushed to the side in favor of ‘getting things done.’ Jennifer Louden’s words gave language to the areas of my life that felt stagnant, and immediately catapulted me into the action my soul craved. If you’ve been looking to tap back into your truest desires and deepest purpose so you can craft a life of meaning, this book will help you do exactly that.
―Amber Rae, author of Choose Wonder over Worry: Move beyond Fear and Doubt to Unlock Your Potential
Why Bother? is a reclamation. With curiosity, wisdom, reverence, and grace, Jennifer Louden shows us how to transform two simple words from the ultimate expression of futility into a path back to desire and, eventually, meaning. Read it, then live it.
―Jonathan Fields, author and founder of Good Life Project

I’ve been a fan of Jen Louden since the early 1990’s and figured her new book would be great yet I didn’t predict the level of impact this book has had on me. It’s like she’s inside my head, coaching me and helping me not drown in bad news and pessimistic thinking. Her voice is supportive and wise, encouraging and empowering, yet never fake or obnoxiously positive.
In Part 1, she slowly guides the reader through what she means by “bothering”. One of her first stories is about her talk with a friend (back when we could visit friends in person). Jen explains that she “settled down, and grew up, like we’re supposed to do”. Yet after many losses she was left with energy that still needed to be channeled into something. This journey to find out how to bother to and discover what’s next doesn’t change, regardless of circumstances, and Jen’s book is the guide to help you answer “so what’s do I do now?”
In Part 2, she outlines “The Stages of Bothering”. I want to print out the table to contents and hang it up on my wall to remind me of what I *can* do in the middle of this storm we’re trying to find a way to cope with.
Jen writes: “ My intention with this book is to offer you companionship, not prescription, because that’s what I needed most in my low time when I only knew how to ask why bother [...]” Well, she has gone above and beyond for me in her effort so I want to encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and feel the same.
So why am I here? Because THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT. It is both personal and universal, deep and real, compassionate and rigorous. Jennifer Louden has walked the walk she writes about. She plumbs the depths of what it means to bother, to motivate oneself to create and contribute (or even just to show up) day after day. I've been coaching and studying self-efficacy for 30 years, and this is the best popular treatment of complex and crucial themes that I have ever seen.
It's a whole lot more fun to read than my review. ;-)
PS: I Gabe it five starts because to give it four would be dishonest. It's a freaking five star book.
Jen Louden is the real deal. She is walking it, writing it, sharing it, truly living this day to day (and sometimes moment to moment) question of why bother. And she's crafted a book that reads like a good, honest, kick-ass friend who truly wants the very best for you, grounded in curiosity, compassion, grit, and grace. Get it, read it, lean into its generous support.
