The Wicked & The Dead: A Faery Bargains Novel Kindle Edition
Half witch, half killer, wholly unpreparedly for a Faery Bargain...Geneviève Crowe makes her living beheading the dead in near-future New Orleans. But now, her magic’s gone sideways, and the only person strong enough to help her is the one man who could tempt her to think about picket fences: Eli Stonecroft, a faery bar-owner in New Orleans. When human businessmen start turning up as draugar, both the queen of the again-walkers and the wealthy son of one of the victims, hire Geneviève to figure it out. She works to keep her magic in check, the dead from crawling out of their graves, and enough money for a future that might be a lot longer than she’d like. Neither her heart nor her life are safe now that she’s juggling a faery, murder, and magic.
“I loved The Wicked and The Dead! A sassy, ass-kicking heroine, a deliciously mysterious fae hero, and a wonderful mix of action and romance. Add that to Melissa's usual great world-building, and I'm already looking forward to book 2!" – Jeaniene Frost, NYT Bestselling Author
"Wow! You all seriously want to read this. It's an urban fantasy - very cool twist on vampires - with a heroine simultaneously so kickass, warmly human, and passionate about the world that I want to be her. I also want to be her because of the insanely hot Eli, her fae love interest. . . .Get in on the ground level with this series, because it's going to be an auto buy. Highly recommend."-- Jeffe Kennedy, award-winning author and SFWA Board Member

By the end I hated the lead female, I have no clue what the lead guy sees in her, and don’t really care about any of the characters, there was virtually no story progression and it ended on a cliff hanger. But I honestly don’t even car nor do I wonder what will happen. The entire book is just the heroine talking about the male lead. I can never be with him, but he’s so hot, I don’t want kids, I want to sleep with him, I never want to get married, but I think I will kiss him and have a one night stand with him, no I can’t do that it will ruin our friendship….on and on it went. I felt like I was reading a preteens diary. There was basically no story (the parts with actual story could have fit in one chapter) just never ending internal dialogue about how she can’t be with this guy but wants to have sex with him. I began skimming the book, page after page of this same thing. I actually was hoping a monster would just eat her and someone else would become the story lead so she would shut up.
I am so disappointed and wish I hadn’t wasted good money on this book.
Then I started the book a bit annoyed because it seemed to just start in the middle of the story. And very few authors can pull that off successfully. Then the next I know I'm laughing out loud, and gasping and crying and... if a book can make me run through a full spectrum of emotions in less than 280 pages and stay up all night reading the sequels-- it's a 5 star book.
And this one is also a 5 star romance.

The main character Genevieve, who is part witch and part something else, is fun to follow through her nights fighting undead draugr in an alternate New Orleans, where the nights aren’t safe any more. She is a special snowflake, but I have a soft spot for them, so that is fine with me. Especially since she utters a lot of snarky and deadpan stuff, which I love! I also like the secondary characters, as far as I got to know them, and the mystery she is hired to solve (a nice change for her from the usual „lay the re-awakened dead back down in their graves again. By any means necessary.“).
Now the stuff I did not overly appreciate. First, there are a lot of repetitive explanations. A lot. I was told stuff multiple times over the same chapter, which hampered the flow of the narrative and gave the story a lot of „tell instead of show“.
The other thing I wasn’t a fan of was the romance. It was just there. Genevieve meets her friend Eli the fae, and it‘s just „he wants me, I want him, but we can’t be together, it’s a tragedy“. We didn’t see the feelings build for any of them, so again, I am told that there are strong feelings, but I don’t see them and I don’t know why. I get why some reviewers asked themselves, if they missed an installment.
Yet overall, I still enjoyed the book, it’s entertaining, so I will probably read the sequel.
