3.0 out of 5 stars I love a good psychological thriller, but this one was a little bit much.

Not a bad read, but it was all I could do to finish this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ex-spouses as neighbors? What could go wrong?
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 14, 2023
Where do I start? Everything about this plot line was preposterous. Two almost ex-spouses with significant others AND kids buy houses next door to keep the families close, for the good of the kids. Are you still there? No spoilers except to say that I don't appreciate when, nearing the end, the author has to "explain" the events to justify the ending. That's a cop-out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 2, 2022
Unfortunately this author's books and I are not a good pairing and this read was no exception.
Having a Kindle Unlimited subscription, I decided to give this book a go about an ideal break-up. Is there such a thing?
Rob and Jess split up but are not officially divorced because she's astonishingly posted paperwork for finalizing the split that never arrives at the solicitors and more astonishingly doesn’t follow up. He has moved on with Carol, a client of Jess' mum. They are already planning their wedding. They move in next door to Jess and her new love interest Ben and the fence between the two properties is torn down.Strange things start to happen. Nasty notes get left in Jess' home. Mugs are smashed. A tyre slashed,. Keys missing etc...etc

The characters were all unlikeable and colourless. Add to this ridiculous drama and a weak ending and you reach my rating of 2 stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointed

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of The Wife Next Door.

"Two houses. Two front doors. One family. And we’re going to make it work. Nothing can possibly go wrong…"

Wanted to read this novel as the plot line interested me; in a world of divorce and co-parenting would it really be possible to live next door to your ex and his/her new partner successfully.

For me, the characters really didn't resonate - can't say as I liked any of them but didn't dislike them either - just found them all rather meh. In many areas the story dragged and I skim read large portions. Sometimes the writing twists would indicate a certain character responsible for the harassment of Jess which kept you wondering. . .I found the ending anticlimactic.

If this had been a library book, I would have returned it without finishing. (I nearly always finish ARCs regardless of the writing quality).

3.0 out of 5 stars Too far fetched!

I've read a couple of Rona Halsall's books before and enjoyed them but found this story 'over the top' with no depth. Couldn't engage with any of the characters and the ending was disappointing.

After amicably separating from each other Jess and Rob move into adjoining houses with their respective new partners, Ben and Carol. Their son Toby lives with Jess along with Ben's teenaged daughter. Carol's little boy lives with her and Rob. The aim is to create one happy blended family.
I thought the basic scenario was rather daft but decided to see where the author would go with it. It had potential but the narrative quickly descended into a weak attempt at a psycho drama. Weird and unpleasant things were happening to Jess and she felt she was being targeted by someone malevolent but the other three adults paid little attention to her concerns. Even her own mother was a bit dismissive. Jess was a wimpy character who annoyed me. She felt silly, awkward, guilty and/or embarrassed whenever she tried to talk to others about her experiences. No wonder they didn't take her seriously.
Having ceased to care about Jess as a character, I found it hard to sustain my interest in the novel and skipped and skimmed the final third. When the perpetrator was revealed it came as no great shock. It could only have been one of four: Ben, Rob, Carol or the teenager. There had been no clues as to who it might be and when I reached the end I was only vaguely interested in which of four potential rabbits were pulled out of the hat so to speak.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

I can’t say this lived up to the hype. So completely unbelievable. Surely Jess would never be so stupid, especially considering she’s supposed to a mother. The fact that no one believed what she was going through made it all the more far fetched. Lots of the conversations just didn’t ring true and I found myself constantly not sold by the characters or the story.
I just don’t feel Rona Halsall’s last couple of novels have been up to much, won’t be reading any more. The writing is pretty basic and the characters are just not credible. Found myself racing through this just to get it over with.
