5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent NPD Primer!
Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2020
Unfortunately, I was able to recognize where this was going right off the bat. For the naive many who have no idea what NPD is all about, like I was, this is an excellent opportunity to witness what living with a true narcissist is really like. The mind xxxing she is being dealt is called “Gas Lighting”, you can watch the 1944 version ‘Gas Light’ of a movie here on Prime Video that personafide the behavior and gave it it’s name. I have (temporarily) one of these parasites living off of me for far too long. This movie does an excellent job of showing you where an NPD will take you. It doesn’t start with the courtship which is termed “love bombing.” More viscous is the ‘malignant narcissist’ and the prognosis for the ‘host’ is very grim. I started to watch this movie to get my mind off of this very subject and felt compelled to keep watching to verify that here the subject is again, like an inescapable nightmare. If you are single or are involved in a “what is wrong with this?” situation, you need to watch this and then search more terms like, ‘ghosting’ ‘flying monkeys’ ‘negging’ to open your eyes and mind to what are thought to be only about 1 in 50 of the population. If you’re with someone that has your gut going like an unbalanced washer on spin-dry, herein lies the answer. This is an excellent primer.

1.0 out of 5 starsTrust your woman's intuition!
Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2020
SPOILER ALERT

Thank the organization that gave this movie a TV-PG rating for my one star review rating. I'm tired of being misled.

I was looking for this to movie to be more like the 1990 PG rated "Caroline?" starring Stephanie Zimbalist, another Anastasia-type mysterious "daughter" showing up whose identity is questionable. NOT!

This movie has a pretty steamy, albeit very brief, sex scene at the end, between a 19 year old teenager and a married man. I was not expecting to see two partially nude people in bed simulating sex in a TV movie, let alone a TV movie rated PG.

I understand that this is based on a true story, and that the son walked in on his father with the girl that he had been told was, and believed to be, his older sister. (A new low.) I get that. But It would have been enough just to show his reaction to what he was seeing. TV-PG!

Shifting gears: Trust your instincts. Use your head. Investigate, research, get proof, document. Don't be too quick to invite a stranger into your home, no matter their situation, or who you think it is. That's what I learned from this story based on true events.

Honestly, I am not sure that this is a LMN movie but it sure lives up to one. I think we all kinda had it figured out before the ending, and great ending it was. Jennifer Beal's character scared the heck outta me in the best ways. As another reviewer mentioned, "a primer for NPD". The gas-lighting and projection from Gabe onto Liz was very realistic. I highly recommend this movie to anyone wondering if a person is truly as charming as they seem as well as recognizing the NPD traits...and well, anyone really. It is highly entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars nuclear family tries fusion (and the guitarist husband should, genre-wise)

It is fortunate that I never try to guess a movie's ending. IDK Y people do that, like a movie is a game, and it is a good movie if it tricks the audience or not enough evidence is shown to make a correct guess. By watching dumb I got the pleasure of experiencing a fine ending!

Jennifer Beals was outstanding, using a lot of facial expressions. She is attractive even when emotion breaks up her composure. She acts with her whole head. The rear hair extensions... or is that just more cranium in back... women and their hair & makeup can go too far... but then, that was the character, she who goes too far.

This was well-made, really kind of simple movie, where pieces come together. One can reflect on the characters... the husband should improve his lame guitar solos with this experience!

Yes .. Jennifer is Black.. just like Halle Berry,Mariah Carey and several other Bi-racial beauties.. I loved her in "Flash-Dance".. even though she didn't do the dancing. This movie is a slocky "B" movie .. honestly I thought the "phony" daughter was just a con-artist? Looking to kill the wife , so she could control the family? The ending was pretty good and the cast seemed to gel. Most of these "B" movies are filmed like this one in Canada. I think every woman should see this movie. Just to prepare you for the fact... that the men you fall in love with? May not always appear to be what they really are.. Careful ladies .. !!

I recommend the movie if you're looking for some drama with even a bit of suspense. The story is well crafted and delivered. They all acted quite well, too. Although, some characters I found rather annoying.
I'd still like to clarify that victims of gaslighting aren't just victims. Sad and unfortunate as it may be, the victims play a role as well, by believing too much in that person and doubting themselves, when usually there are signs.

A lot of the times those signs are there from the start. So, let's not sanctify the victims either, please. It's horrible and despicable that anyone would be put through this (the gaslighting), but let's also empower the victims by recognizing their part so they don't make the same mistake, again.

Of course from the title we are being lead to believe this is a Gaslighting genre movie, and it is, with some swerves you can see right through. The problem is they make the lead character played by Jennifer Beals super unlikeable so you don't feel for her much. Jennifer Beals does what she can with a tired script and plastic character, but not even her can save it. The plot was so unbelievable as you can't see Lola Tash's character really having any interest in this older man. It would have been way more interesting as a drama where a daughter really does enter a fractured family rather than a lame thriller. Sadly, this is really as so many have said a kind of lifetime thriller, but honestly even without that much heart.

I don't know about wife's nightmare but it would surely be the husband's funeral! I didn't like that we don't see what happened to honey-bunch in the end. Hope he ended up someplace rundown still trying to put the guitar back together. And I hope wifey quit her job. Every mistake she made was always going to be held against her.

This confirms that all the women out there, who spend months and years questioning their own judgement, that these master manipulators can drive a person to utter insanity! Wives, Mistresses, Children and Friends of Narcissists, are all targets, each with their own story! Every victim of the narc has a vulnerable heart, so think twice before you turn a deaf ear to someone who may need an ear to listen, they may just be learning that their whole world is falling a part! Highly recommend this movie to someone who is doubting their own sanity and truth!

Good acting and good storyline. I would definitely recommend this movie. It wasn't too cheesy or unbelievable like some of the other Lifetime movies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mindlessly entertaining

The three stars I gave this movie are for the quite good acting under the circumstances of run-of-the-mill made-for-TV quality everything else. I might have given it three and a half stars if that option were available except for the guitar-smashing scene at around 1:23:00. Check out the broken guitar lying on the ground after Liz vents her rage on it (and the poor tree). It's solid! C'mon, if it couldn't be hollow like real guitars, was it really necessary to take a clear shot that reveals it to be a mere prop? Makes it kind of hard to suspend disbelief in a story that's already highly implausible.
