From Ilona Andrews, #1 New York Times bestselling author, the thrilling conclusion to her Hidden Legacy series, as Nevada and Rogan grapple with a power beyond even their imagination…
Nevada Baylor can’t decide which is more frustrating—harnessing her truthseeker abilities or dealing with Connor “Mad” Rogan and their evolving relationship. Yes, the billionaire Prime is helping her navigate the complex magical world in which she’s become a crucial player—and sometimes a pawn—but she also has to deal with his ex-fiancée, whose husband has disappeared, and whose damsel-in-distress act is wearing very, very thin.
Rogan faces his own challenges, too, as Nevada’s magical rank has made her a desirable match for other Primes. Controlling his immense powers is child’s play next to controlling his conflicting emotions. And now he and Nevada are confronted by a new threat within her own family. Can they face this together? Or is their world about to go up in smoke?

About the author

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)
Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.
They have co-authored four NYT and USAT bestselling series, the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles, which they post as a free weekly serial. As per the other two books in this series, ‘Burn for Me’ and ‘White Hot’, ‘Wildfire’ is based on an alternative earth where magic is part of everyday life. In 1863 European scientists discovered the Osiris serum. A serum, when given to human’s, would either give them magical powers or cause them to become magic-warped monsters who had to be destroyed. Originally the serum was given out like candy. Governments would give it to soldiers to make them stronger and faster with unpredictable and usually destructive powers. The rich and powerful would use it to give themselves an edge and therefore gain even more wealth and influence. However, it was not long before the devastating effects rippled to the very edges of the world and the serum was locked away. However, the serum had already wrought its effect down to the very DNA of the people who had taken it and passed those changes to the next generation. This began the formation of Houses. Those families with strong hereditary magic created dynasties, feuding with other Houses all in the name of power.
The story picks up immediately after the conclusion of ‘White Hot’, with Nevada having to break the news of their paternal grandmother, Victoria Tremaine, finding them.
‘When life hits you in the gut, it’s always a sucker punch. You never see it coming. One moment you’re walking along, worrying your little worries and making quiet plans, and the next you’re rolled into a ball, trying to hug yourself against the pan, frantic and reeling, your mind a jumble of scared thoughts.’
Victoria is the head of House Tremaine, a Prime Truthseeker and the mother of the Baylor sisters’ father, James. Whilst House Tremaine is the smallest of the three truthseeker Houses in the United States it is the most feared. She can pull the truth out of anyone she meets and is vicious to anyone who stands in her way. Around two decades before the series, Victoria Tremaine went on a rampage and inflicted a reign of terror across a wide swarth of Houses. Primes would disappear and turn up with their minds fried. Some recovered after extensive time and therapy, but there was those that did not. She was looking for James who had run away from her, terrified of what she was capable of and determined to escape her clutches. However, as the only surviving Prime of House Tremaine, she desperately needs the sisters to carry on her legacy and is prepared to do whatever it takes to make them bend to her will.
Along with the looming threat of Victoria, Nevada also takes on the case of Rynda Charles’s missing husband, Brian Sherwood. We found out in Book 2 ‘White Heat’, that Rynda is Rogan’s ex-fiancés through an arranged marriage set up when they were children. Rogan knew that Rynda, a Prime Empath, did not have the ability to deal with the darkness in him so had broken the engagement before entering military service. Rynda’s mother Olivia never forgave Rogan for interrupting all her plans which possibly contributed to her becoming involved in the overarching conspiracy. Now that Olivia was dead, Rynda’s previously high place in society had faded.
‘Two weeks ago, I had friends. I had my mother’s friends, powerful, respected, and always so eager to do Olivia Charles a favour. Two weeks ago, one phone call and half of the city would be out looking for Brian. They would be putting pressure on the police, on the mayor, on the Texas Rangers. But now, everyone is out. Everyone is too busy to see me. There is an invisible wall around me. No matter how loud I scream, nobody can hear me.’
Nevada recognises that Rynda is at the end of her rope and whilst she did not personally murder Rynda’s mother, she did make that death possible, justified though it was. She agrees to help her locate Brian and this initiates the main storyline of the book.
Between investigating what has happened to Brian and trying to deal with the threat of House Tremaine, Nevada has also decided to register as a House. To be registered, the House must have a minimum of two Prime’s that are blood related. Nevada is sure she is a Prime Truthseeker, something Rogan recognised in Book 1 ‘Burn for Me’ and believing her sisters are also Primes with different talents. We get to understand a lot more about her sisters and extended families’ powers in this novel and I can’t wait to see them expanded upon in future books.
There is significant growth in the relationship between Nevada and Rogan in this book. Partially due to there being less action as the previous entries. Don’t get me wrong, there is still great pacing and progressing, it just didn’t feel like they were careening from one encounter to another. Rather there was a bit more downtime detailing their lives when not dealing with issues or being put in life and death situations.
Nevada once again makes an excellent narrator, still upholding her strength of character and unwillingness to compromise her moral and ethical standards no matter how much easier it would make her life. She is still stubborn but caring, tenacious but vulnerable, and gutsy but compassionate. She understands and accepts Rogan as he is, not trying to make him change but supporting him and helping to make him better because she loves him. There are moments when she doubts herself, but she overcomes every obstacle. I really liked how she dealt with Rynda. Nevada doesn’t waver in her belief of how she and Rogan feel for one another, and whilst she can understand why Rynda is latching onto Rogan for a sense of security and comfort, she also won’t let him go. Is there a bit of jealousy, yes, but she doesn’t become irrational or whiny about the situation.
After ‘White Hot’, we attained a more complete picture of what turned Connor Rogan into Mad Rogan. ‘Wildfire’ expands more on his life and history in Houston. There is less background on Connor in this book, but we do get a better understanding of the lengths he will go to protect Nevada. He fights against his instincts and tries to ensure that Nevada makes her own choices without his needs or wants overruling her own.
‘He put himself on a chain for my benefit, because as much as he wants to wrap me in bubble wrap and kidnap me to his lair, he knows I wouldn’t stand for it. He’s trying to make sure I see all choices available to us as an emerging House.’
The secondary characters are once again a highlight of Ilona Andrews writing. Whilst the story doesn’t linger on them you do get a real sense of who they are and what makes them tick. Front and centre is Cornelius Harrison who is now working with Nevada and the family at Baylor Investigative Agency. From the bit character in ‘Burn for Me’, he becomes a fully fledged member of the team and an asset to Nevada and Rogan. I also want to learn more about his daughter Matilda. I feel there is a big reveal to happen with her and I am really excited to learn more about them both.
Nevada’s family is also present, and we finally learn about each of their magics in greater detail. They are still there to support Nevada and each other during the events of ‘Wildfire’ and I really admire how they can tease and poke fun at one another in one moment and then all be a unified team in the next without it feeling awkward of false. A lot of the humour from the book comes through their interactions and the sisterly teasing gave me flashbacks to my own interactions with my two sisters.
‘Wildfire’ is the stunning conclusion to Nevada Baylor and Connor Rogan’s story arc within the Hidden Legacy series. It by no means concludes the main storyline so I am happily expecting many more books in the series, hopefully covering the POV of the other Baylor family members. I highly recommend this book to everyone who has read and enjoyed Ilona Andrews in the past or likes to read Fantasy / Supernatural / Romance books. For those interested. the next book is a novella, ‘Diamond Fire’ written from Catalina’s POV.
5 out of 5 stars!
NOTE:
Again, the only detractor I had to this book is the cover.
Urban fantasy is a genre flooded with mediocre writing and poor editing, and books from Ilona Andrews (and the fantastic Patricia Briggs) are shining examples of what really, really good writing and editing can create. As an analogy, most urban fantasy is like regular food. Some of it is McDonalds--satisfies at the time but isn't really good. Some of it is like Applebees--actually pretty good food, and a better experience. Enjoyable, but still formulaic, predictable and not terribly exciting. This series (and Kate Daniels) are like an exquisite, Michelin-starred chef-created meal that is truly a work of art. Yes, you might have beef at all three places, but at the fancy restaurant it's going to be perfectly prepared, with tastes that both please and challenge your palate, and will be beautifully presented. THAT'S what reading this series is like--eating a gourmet meal. Luckily for us, this book costs no more than most, although I would have bought it in hardcover without hesitation. In a fading genre, books like this will always sell, because they are so very good.
I won't recap the book, as others have already done that and I want to keep this spoiler-free, but here are my likes and dislikes of this book:
LIKES/LOVES:
1. The characters. Not only do you root for them, but these are people that you would really want to know and hang out with in real life. They try to be the best people they can be, they learn and grow, they don't make stupid, dramatic mistakes to further the plot, and never once do you want to yell, "You idiot, what are you thinking?!?" Instead, you'll find yourself cheering them on. Even more, no one is black and white. Characters are painted in myriad shades of gray, making them more complex and interesting.
2. The sense of family and loyalty that makes the Baylor clan who they are. They aren't perfect by a long shot, but they are awesome, and they love and support one another. Hatred, jealousy and backstabbing have their place in stories, but thankfully the authors didn't infect this family with any of that. They are a family you love to love, and that love and support extends to others--Cornelius and Matilda, for example. Others care for and fight for them because of this, too.
3.. The infinite potential for more books in this world. I would be thrilled if Avon is smart enough to renew Hidden Legacy for at least another three books. This world has so much more to explore, and there are so many secondary characters who deserve their own stories--Cornelius, Augustine, each of the Baylors (I would LOVE to see how Leon turns out!), and even unrelated characters simply set in the Hidden Legacy world. MOAR BOOKS PLZ!
4. The selfless but possessive love between Nevada and Rogan. There's no artificial romantic angst between them, but they do have issues and bumps in the road. They handle them like real, mature people who want the best for the other person, yet whom are not saints or martyrs.
5. Love wins in the end in this book. Romantic love, family love, parental love, platonic love. Love wins, goodness wins, but there's nothing syrupy or cheesy about it.
DISLIKES:
1. The covers and titles of the series. The authors had little to no input on either, and Avon really dropped the ball on these. Thank goodness for Kindle, because I wouldn't want to be seen reading any of the three with a visible cover. Not only do they not represent the type or quality of story, but they're dated and incredibly cheesy. And the titles sound as if they let a bunch of sixth-grade fangirls name them. Do better, Avon, these stories deserve it. You can make covers and titles that will pull in new readers without making the books seem like modern bodicerippers. I suppose we should be grateful that they didn't come up with titles like, "The Prime's Plaything" or "Loved by a Hurricane". Barf.
2. The fact that this is the end of the series contract. The authors have said that if Avon doesn't renew, they will self-publish at least one more book. That's great, but not enough! As I said before, this world and its characters can support (and deserve) a whole, long series. Get to it, Avon! You've got another Kate Daniels on your hands.
Buy this book, and the two before it. You won't be disappointed. I promise.
Nevada and Connor Rogan are such a power couple. Its wonderful how much he loves her and willing to do anything for her happiness. He is so strong and she is so capable in her skills and ability to stand up against his wishes on certain things. They make a great team and I love it when they fight bad guys together. There are several sweet, tender moments between them. Lots of feel good moments
I highly recommend this book and series. A must read!

It especially gets hard for Nevada when Rogan’s ex-finance shows up asking for Nevada’s help in finding her missing husband.
Even more troubling is Nevada’s grandmother Victoria turning up like a bad penny, trying to force Nevada into to joining her house, no matter the cost.
Amongst all the personal problems there is the urgent need to find out who is behind the conspiracy that has plagued Houston since Book 1!
I really like that Nevada and Rogan have a grown up relationship. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but they both really try to do what’s best for each other and themselves. They will always have misunderstandings and miscommunications because they are human (despite the magic) but they try, which is more than can be said for a lot of characters in these types of books.
The author’s don’t rely on relationship problems to drive the plot, the plot does very nicely on it’s own. The relationship part of the story is a bonus.
A lot happens plot-wise in this book, so once again I was gripped and couldn’t put the book down. What is it about a really good book that makes you want to carry on reading as though you are going to miss something by picking it up again later?
I can’t wait for the next book, thankfully it just came out, so no waiting for me - YAY!

First and foremost for me in this series, is the Nevgan (awful ‘ship’ name alert). These two continued to dig through who they were together and where their boundaries sat. What I love about Connor (Rogan) is how he was selfless and both selfish in his love, that said, he had the balance just right as situations presented. These two got to have a date in this book and I lived for that experience. I think I am possibly too hung up on these two…
“I’m starving. I haven’t had anything to eat since I stole a bear claw from your kitchen this morning.”
“You didn’t steal it. All my bear claws are yours.”
The whole storyline about the becoming of a House was fascinating and the reveals about the youngest Baylor sister and Leon were pretty wow. The baddies were fierce and I definitely saw parallels between Grandma Tremaine and Kate Daniels father – the strong, evil patriach/matriach but with a dose of they might care a bit.
I am hugely excited for where the next book goes. I need more of this family but more importantly more of ‘Nevgan’ (sorry). They’re not quite Kate and Curran but probably only because I don’t know them quite as well. Ilona Andrews know how to create a story, a couple to last and cheer for.

It's the third and final part of Rogan and Nevada's journey. And wow, it's an adventure to remember. The pace and actions make for a real page turner. The romance blossoms, but the differences in their abilities could put a damper on any foreseeable union. Will they throw caution to the wind and follow their hearts or will they adhere to society's expectations?
This series is thrilling. The danger and greed for power are cringe worthy, but the family interactions and the romance make it all worthwhile. Nevada becomes a force to be reckoned with and there is so much more to "mad" Rogan. He is my hero.
It's taken me a while to read this series, but I was rewarded by being able to read the whole trilogy without having to wait for the next book to be released. Great series.

For those who haven't read Burn for Me and White Hot, stop. Purchase these books, read said books in order and then get your mitts on Wildfire - You are in for one 'magical' ride!
Wildfire is a fantastic payoff for those who have invested in the series; it is filled with action, humour and suspense and genuinely had me on the edge of my seat. The world building throughout this series has been fantastic. The world, it's laws and politics are imparted to the reader with such ease and clarity that it is easy frighteningly easy to imagine oneself in that world. Characters are so richly drawn and the dialogue is, in my opinion, second to none but it is the flaws and vulnerability that have been endowed within each character that make for such a rich tapestry.
As any fan knows, this is supposedly the final book. I say 'supposedly' because the epilogue leaves it open enough for the series to continue whilst still giving a satisfying payoff. I for one urge Avon Romance, publishers, to invest in this series for the foreseeable future to let it 'finish' would be ludicrous and remarkably shortsighted. I strongly believe that if IA were willing, that Hidden Legacy has the bones for a TV series.
