The sentence structure is cumbersome even for a doctorate level reader. As a bedtime story it's very difficult for my child to know what is happening in each chapter. I found myself "editing" on the fly for her to comprehend each scene. This is the same child I'll read the King James Bible to; She has no problem following Old Testament structure, Modern Poetry, or Classical Fables.
In addition to bulky sentence structure, I also found misspelled words. The anecdotes of Will's mother seems to be an after thought and could have been removed entirely without any penalty to the main story line.
I was left with the impression this book was never edited before publishing and if it was, the "editor" was the author herself or inexperienced.
Overall, the author did a great job but needed an editor to make this book a real success.
What I like best about this story line is that it opens the door to speak to our own children about the importance of guns, gun safety and hunting. This story is easily relatable to hunting and non-hunting families alike.
The illustrations are amazingly detailed and every time you look at a picture it's almost like you see something you missed before. Excellent job!
I read the book out loud to my three kids this evening. They were very interested and enjoyed the illustrations. The story line kept them interested and waiting for more. Like Brian, the kids wondered what Morel hunting was all about and kept asking what a Morel was. It's a great book and so much more than just about hunting - it's also about friendship, hardwork and setting your mind to something and accomplishing it.
