A Slightly Overdue But Largely Satisfying Conclusion

After frankly probably going on a few books too long, Anderson finally
brings the "Destroyermen" series into port. We have known from the
excerpts of Courtney Bradford's post-war book that, he, at least survived
the war and that the good guys won. It was just a matter of having too
many balls in the air to get to that end-state, and in this book Anderson
manages that pretty well.

Since Captain Matthew Reddy and his WWI era Asiatic-Fleet destroyer,
the USS Walker, were caught in a freak probability storm while
fighting a hopeless action against a Japanese super-battleship,
they have found themselves on another Earth, one with more or less
familiar topography, but which went down different evolutionary
paths. They have found friends & allies in the lemur-like "Cats",
the Empire of New Britain founded by long-ago by other castaways,
the New United States started by Mexican-War era timelost Americans,
and the Republic of Real People, a south african based multi-species
polity.

The alliance has been fighting first and foremost against the
dinosaur descended Griks. What force can be spared from that faces
The Holy Dominion, an unholy merger of the worst of Aztec totalitarianism
and corrupted Catholicism with, and in the background, there is
always lurking the fascist League of Tripoli.

Having, in the last book, finally brought an end, more or less, to
the Grik war (without having to commit a genocide) the full force
of the alliance can now be brought to bear on the Dominion and their
League backers. Against those forces, we have our usual cast of characters,
much thinned over 15 books of losses and often on their last emotional leg.
Who will live, and who will die? I'll have to say I was surprised in a
couple of cases. Justice is meted appropriately if imperfectly, and
it appears that some of the cancer may metastasize, but for now the
survivors may have a bit of rest. (That's not a big spoiler, this is
not the kind of series that carries on 15 books and then the good guys lose).

The only complaint I would make (aside from maybe having wrapped
things up in a few less books) is that Anderson teases inter-species
romance, but always backs away (despite having inter-species families
with war orphan adopted kids), starting with de Silva's maybe-yes/maybe-no
throuple, and then Tabby's infatuation, but most perplexingly here
with aviators Fred & Kari. Those two are clearly a couple but
Anderson seems unwilling to go there.

That aside, it's been a good ride, and if Anderson returns to the setting,
I'll be along.

I will not spoil this at all, but it is worth it. It wasn't my favorite book of the series, but series-enders never are. Again, 100% worth it.

If you have not read any of the previous Destroyermen books, buy all of them and start from the first before reading this.

If you don't know what the Destroymen series is, well, you're in for a helluva treat. Imagine a WWII destroyer getting sucked into a dimensional warp to an alternate version of Earth where things evolved a bit differently. And without giving too much away, it turns out they're not the first humans to show up, and those that have come before have left their mark.

Yup, you're on your own from there. Good luck, and good reading!

I have enjoyed every book in the Destroyermen series. I heartily recommend that you read it in order from beginning to end. I am going to start re-reading the whole series very soon. I had a feeling as I was reading this installment that it was the last book. The world that Taylor Anderson created is very imaginative and I really liked all of the characters including the Grik, nasty people that they are. Anderson wraps up the story pretty well. Lots of people die and battles won but I was left with some nagging questions that I hope he follows up on. Who built those locks? What were those explosions, I think I know but I have guessed wrong before. Anderson himself sounds like he doesn't want to leave this universe quite yet and I am hoping that he follows up with some more stories. There is a lot more to explore in this world and I, for one, will be happy to follow right along. Hopefully we'll find out soon what Dennis, Courtney, et al, find in their travels.

Yes, I read all 15 books. Anderson creates an alternate Earth with intelligent species other than man. The human heroes, the Destroyermen, pass into this alternate Earth aboard the Walker, a WW1 era US destroyer fighting in WW2. Other intelligent beings have passed into this alternate Earth from different periods in our history, and from other alternate Earths. All of the books are about a war between the the Alliance of Destroyermen and the cat like Lemurians against the Grik, an intelligent reptile based species. Anderson is unique in that the wars are not entirely between different species. For example, the Griks are allied with WW2 Japanese. The war expands when the Alliance takes on the "Doms", a central American nation ruled by a perverted bloody form of Catholicism. The high level of acceptance and equality practiced by the Alliance toward all species is pretty idealistic. However, the battles and relationships are well done. Enjoyed every book.

I stumbled into this series by accident at a second hand book store. So after 15 books the main story line concludes. Yes, the author could have handled it in two or three different series of their own. Though, once you get to the end it ties up well and makes sense to keep it all in one place. It's a fun story and a good read. Due to the years it takes to put on paper you can tell the author grows in their style. One major thing that I appreciate is it didn't suffer most SF's foible of unabashed progress into the unbelievable. There's even a sense that Mr. Anderson caught himself in that quandary and walked away from it. My only advice if he by some chance reads this. Don't let readers just buy this piece meal. I think it could logically be broken into 3-4 sets or campaigns. Small enough to manage and be affordable but keep a new reader coming back.

The fifteenth (an unfortunately last) book in the Destroyermen series is yet another page turner. If you have followed the characters from "Into the Storm" until "Winds of Wrath" their adventures in this weird and wonderful alternative earth will have kept you entertained, fascinated and above all engrossed. This book pretty much wraps up all the loose ends, though has a few possibilities to spin off from. If you haven't dipped you toes into the troubled waters that the crews of USS Walker and Mahan are thrown into, and all the characters they discover, it is well worth investing yourself in their stories. The books have been well written, the characters developed, the storylines converging into this one great rip-roaring thrilling, nail-biting ending.

An amazing ending to an amazing story. I will miss the characters both alive a those who pasted. The one criticism I. Have of these book are that the characters are so alive a likeable that each character that we lost caused some heartache. This in itself show what a wonderful job Taylor Anderson did in creating this universe which I have followed from beginning to end. I heartily recommend this book and all that came before. Hopefully Taylor will dream up other stories and incredibly lovable characters to entertain my waking hours.
