ByJPSTOP 500 REVIEWERon August 1, 2017This is my favorite out of the three titles published so far about the Four Horsemen (not counting the collection of fourteen short stories), which does not mean that I disliked the others, far from it in fact. There are several reasons for this.

The first is that I found the characterization of the heroine - one Alexis Cromwell, the commander of the Winged Hussars - as being well-rounded, with perhaps more depth than the two previous Commanders readers may have come across when reading Cartwright's Cavaliers and Asbaran Solutions. Apart from my somewhat being subjective, this is also partly due to the two previous titles which have introduced readers to the Four Horsemen Universe, to the Galactic Union and also to a glimpse of Alexis Cromwell, as she helps out the young and inexperienced Jim Cartwright. Also present in this title is Rick Culper - Jim's boyhood friend in Cartwright's Cavaliers - and his debuts as a mercenary marine specialized in boarding actions and defending ships from boarding.

A second feature that has grown over time but was already present in previous titles are the various alien species. This is because the Winged Hussars, in addition to being the richest and the most numerous of all of the Four Horsemen mercenary companies, is also the one that relies the most on aliens, with these making up about half the numbers. You therefore get to know more about quite a few species, including MinSha or Bakulu, to name just a couple, and massive ursoïds that make excellent heavy weapon specialists. My overall favorite in this book is one Oort, a massive and relentless female Tortantula (a giant and heavily armed and armored spider) which, unlike the savage and utterly ruthless who enjoin challenges and slaughter, and always fight to the finish, develops a conscience and indulges in philosophy.

A third feature is about this mercenary company's specialty, which are space warships. You therefore get treated to a whole collection of ship-to-ship engagements, boarding actions and a couple of major space battles, something that is of course quite original in the series since the two previous volumes were more about ground and/or space to ground assault forces. These clashes are all told in a vivid, exiting and gripping way, showing the tactical and strategic mastery and superiority of Alexis Cromwell.

A further feature is that you get some glimpses of the Commander's past, of her daring twin sister, and, towards the end, an explanation for her somewhat morose and at times strange behaviors, in particular. One limitation here is that this is just about it. There is precious little about their mother although there is a bit about the origins of the company, and about the historical reference that underpins its name.

Five stars for the longest (and, for me at least, the best) of the series so far

These are trying times for the Hussars, someone might be hunting them. The hunters would be wise to remember, Alexis Cromwell is nobody's prey.

Shared universes can get mixed reviews. Some authors are good, some are fair, you wait with bated breath for the great ones and try to forget those that don't measure up. For the Four Horsemen Universe, you have a group of authors that can't stop writing great kick ass stories. Each book screams for a sequel. You finish the last page and end up wanting the story to continue on and on. I don't like to give spoiler alerts or go into detail about the plot but rest assured any fan of SciFi Military Fiction will absolutely enjoy reading any of the books.

Winged Hussars gives a different perspective of the Four Horsemen Universe. There is lots of action, some mystery, cliffhangers and a huge desire to find out who the real enemy is. I think the pace, action, writing style are in line with anything Robert Heinlein or Jerry Pournelle have written for the genre. I have also checked out Mark Wandrey's website and immediately purchased one of his other novels. If you want more of the Four Horsemen, by all means buy the other novels and the anthology. They are wall well worth the money.

This was a nice addition to the universe and far better than book 2 in my opinion. Here like the first book you have characters with some character. A plot that while pushing the bounds of credibility is plausible enough to be interesting, and a well-written and edited tale.

This reminded me a lot of the first book. (it should, as they have the same author, book 2 was someone else's work.).

I can't point out a single major complaint. I think my only real problem was that this was such an adrenaline filled plot that it tired me out just reading. The story never paused and reflects on itself or allowed the characters to grow outside of all the conflict.

There is a lot to like here, so I give it 4 stars.

This is the third book in the Four Horsemen series. Well written, fast paced, perfectly edited, and superbly engaging. I have to date thoroughly enjoyed both of Mr. Wandrey's books in this series. Both Cartwright's Cavaliers and Winged Hussars exhibit the fast paced action interspersed with sufficient flashbacks to add background to the story without interfering with the flow. Mr. Wandrey's characters are real to life, strong in character and of determined mind all without being over the top caricature action heroes, something I unfortunately can not say for Mr. Kennedy's MC in Asbaran Solutions (second Book in this series), a book I did NOT like at all.. I'm truly enjoying the trip Mr. Wandrey is taking us on and look forward to the next book by him.

Mark Wandrey has hit his stride as an author of classic military science fiction. His newest novel, Winged Hussars is one of the best reads I’ve had this year.
The universe he and fellow author, Chris Kennedy have created is well-rounded and far-reaching. They have created characters that have the reader wanting more. This was definitely the case in Winged Hussars. Throughout the novel, Wandrey had me wondering about characters, watching their development with interest, and in a few cases, sitting back in my chair and breathing out.
The book is non-stop action from the first page and the pacing is what you would expect from someone that has been writing for as long as Wandrey.
I’m looking forward to the final installment by Kennedy in a few weeks with, The Golden Horde. And from what I’ve been given to understand there will be much more of the The Four Horsemen…to which I heartily say, “Ooorah.” (Or Hoowah, Hoorah, Huzzah…or whatever exclamation of celebration you care to use.)

Each is a standalone story that has had over-arching plot elements woven into them to a culmination of the story to this point. This book is set in one of the mercenary companies, telling the story of the Winged Hussars, one of the Four Horsemen - Earth's mightiest mercenary companies.

Mark Wandry has created a compelling story with interesting characters: The Captain of the ship and the Space Marine who just joined the unit. This wildly divergent view point allows the reader to get a sense of the sweeping space battles, then the In-your-face action killing aliens and defending the ship. Totally worth the time!

Forget all your high tech gravity defying technology, everything in this series is as basic as it comes and that only adds to it. Throw in a bunch of kick ass mercenaries and aliens that you cant help but dislike and you get the complete package.
Looking forward to more from these two guys.

By book 3 the reader knows that a conspiracy exists to destroy or discredit Earth's premier mercenary companies. The Hussars are a space based merc company and those who hunt them don't know what they've started. The Hussars have some unique tricks, this isn't a humanity rah rah story. Lots of space based combat and characters have a high mortality rate. Clever manoeuvres, trickery and manipulating the opponent's weaknesses all play a part. We don't learn who is behind the vendetta against the 4 horseman but from hints and events in this and previous books it's a powerplay on a huge scale.

WOW! Just wow! This book is pretty much non-stop action from beginning to end. You get a real sense of the urgency of the fight the Pegasus (the Hinged Hussars flagship), Alexis Cromwell (the owner of the Hussars), and Rick Culver's squad, (He's the new Human recruit) are involved in. Someone is trying to destroy the Pegasus, and has set a series of traps for them. Each time they return from hyperspace, there is a fleet of ships waiting to attack them, each time causing a little more damage. How Alexis, the crew and the Marines take on the enemy is one wild and bumpy ride. Although you don't get to find out who has manipulated the enemy forces into attacking, I hope the next book will provide some answers to this.
