Multi-faceted narrator Jeffrey Kafer packs a punch delivering this suspenseful military romance, the first in the best-selling Titan series.
After putting her life on the line to protect classified intelligence, military psychologist Mia Kensington is on a cross-country road trip from hell with an intrusive save-the-day hero. Uninterested in the white knight act of Colby Winters, she'd rather take her chances without the ruggedly handsome, cold-blooded operative who boasts an alpha complex and too many guns. Colby, an elite member of The Titan Group, has a single objective on his black ops mission: to recover a document important to national security. It was supposed to be an easy in-and-out operation. But now, "by any means necessary" becomes his survival mantra when he faces off with Mia, a stunning woman he can't leave behind.
When Titan's safe houses are compromised, Colby stashes Mia at his home, exposing his secret—he's the adoptive father of an orphaned baby girl. Too soon, danger arrives, and Mia lands in the hands of a sadistic cartel king with a taste for torture. As hours bleed into fear-drenched days, Colby races across the globe and through a firestorm of bullets to save the woman he can't live without.

There was plenty of action between guns, bombs, kidnappings, torture and a special ops group, Titan. Colby Winters is ex-military and sent on a seemingly simple retrieval when he sees Mia Kensington taking the package. Before he can get the package from her, some men who he calls ‘Team Tagalong’ grab her and start hauling her out of the airport to their vehicle. When he locates her, he takes her and the package but she is one feisty woman, kicking and fighting.
A Columbian who specializes in kidnapping young girls wants the disk that has evidence against him, so he sends numerous operatives after Mia and the disk. There is the usual push-pull of emotions throughout the story with both Winters and Mia attracted to each other but not sure whether to move forward or not. Every time they think they are safe then the bad guys show up again and Mia is taken. Winters gets the Titan group involved and they head to Columbia for the rescue with plenty of action involved.
This was a very entertaining story with the suspense and the building connection between Colby and Mia. I loved all of the characters and couldn’t wait to read about Cash next so started Sweet Girl and then Garrison’s Creed immediately after this story.
Here's what threw me. I found the pace a bit slow. Some of the scenes repetitive and honestly, considering the synopsis, the suspense wasn't nearly what I was anticipating. And all the hot and cold between Mia and Winters started to get annoying. I get it, Mia! You've got walls and good reasons for them but give the man a break already!
That being said, I liked the idea behind the book. Both Mia and Colby on their own mission but end up crossing paths and having to work together to figure it out. Save themselves and the mission. Lust and passion burn bright but there is always the threat of danger lurking...And nothing forces someone to examine what they really want than the threat of death.
They have only been together for a very short time, she is antagonistic because she thinks he's a bad guy(even though he saved her from the 2 who had abducted her) she has tried to escape and run the car off the road, they are running from bad guys and ....he pulls over and kisses her....and forget everything that has happened, both of them are all over each other. Really? A trained operative is just going to lose his mind and focus that easily? How had he managed to stay alive so long?
The author makes a point of saying(repeatedly) how unusual Winter's behavior is, how he doesn't understand why he cannot keep focus and keep on track, ect. It gets old and annoying. He does not act professionally at all. Most of his inner musings are all about her, forget how his mission has become one big clusterf***k or what is really going on with the "package". Nope, all her all the time.
He has saved her multiple times, beaten one team, killed another team during a firefight and now the bad guys still following him are suppose to believe that this obviously trained operative. who has defeated them more than once, is going to stop at a truckers hotel, get drunk and paw her right out in the open? Oh, and to make it an even more "you've got to be kidding me moment", he is actually trying to seduce her while he keeps one eye out for the bad guy. Multi-tasking indeed.
I am listening to this book and, although the narration is fine, the story may have too many absurd scenes for me to actually finish it. It is not really possible to skim an audio book and skip all the dumb parts.
Winter's Heat is a romantic suspense, my favorite kind of read, and Book#1 in the Titan series. I loved Colby who is an ex-Seal, now working for Titan. He thinks he's just out for a routine retrieval until he unexpectedly meets Mia. She's like nothing or no one Colby has ever known. She carries her own baggage. The story flows well and is fast paced and of course has got my required hot & juicy getting to know you between Colby and Mia. I definitely do not want to vacation in Columbia anytime soon. Cristin sure knows how to write to scare the heck out of you describing those cartel guys. I almost had to stop and take a shower because I could actually drum up the smells of bad guys!
I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the other guys in Titan and can't wait to start "Garrison's Creed". Gotta go. I'm going to be busy for awhile.

Colby never thought he'd fall for a woman , he thought of only himself and his daughter but Mia is a force of nature that just swept in like a tsunami and washed away all his reservations of what it would be like to be a family. Fantastic, could not put it down

With this story you are not only treated to how winter met his match in Mia but introduced to a lot of the team and the you begin to get a feel for the dynamics of this group of smart, fiercely loyal, strong, alpha men.
They would die for one another and protect their own until the bitter end.
I fell in love with these men from the first few chapters. This is well written and clever. I enjoyed not just the suspense thriller part of this book but also the romance and beat between these characters. It's sexy, steamy and a treat for the mind.
And to put into one word it's brilliant
I didn't want it to end the best thing is the other books are available and the spin of delta books are just as wonderful

Yes the sex was hot but it came too soon in the book at the expense of the story line. One minute Mia is fighting Winters thinking he is the bad guy, the next they are all over each other. There is no real flow to the story showing how she made the leap from one view to the other.
Mia is supposedly a bright intelligent woman, a psychiatrist, yet she does not bat an eye lid when he continually calls her "doll".
The book is certainly action packed, almost to the extent that it feels like a runaway train. Some of the action is skimmed across when fewer incidents more fully explored would have been more believable.
I liked Cash's character and for this reason I will give the second book a chance but I cannot in all honesty give this more than 3.5 stars.
