A nostalgic and charming tale that evokes the wonder and miracle of Christmas
Best friends Audrey Barrett and Eve Dawson can't wait to celebrate Christmas in postwar America. They are thrilled about starting new traditions with their five-year-old sons, even daring to hope there might be fresh beginnings ahead for both of them, too. But when the 1951 Sears Christmas Wish Book arrives and the boys start obsessing over every toy in it, Audrey and Eve realize their most important task is teaching them the true meaning of the holiday by giving presents, not just asking for them.
The heartwarming tale that unfolds reminds us all that sometimes the most meaningful gifts are the ones we least expect and often don't deserve.

About the author

For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Hope College and Southern Connecticut State University to work as a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
It was during the long Canadian winters at home with her children that Lynn made progress on her dream to write, carving out a few hours of writing time each day while her children napped. Lynn credits her early experience of learning to write amid the chaos of family life for her ability to be a productive writer while making sure her family remains her top priority.
Extended family is also very important to Austin, and it was a lively discussion between Lynn, her mother, grandmother, and daughter concerning the change in women's roles through the generations that sparked the inspiration for her novel Eve's Daughters.
Along with reading, two of Lynn's lifelong passions are history and archaeology. While researching her Biblical fiction series, Chronicles of the Kings, these two interests led her to pursue studies in Biblical Backgrounds and Archaeology through Southwestern Theological Seminary. She and her son traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Timnah. This experience contributed to the inspiration for her novel Wings of Refuge.
Lynn resigned from teaching to write full-time in 1992. Since then she has published 27 novels. Eight of her historical novels have won Christy Awards for excellence in Christian Fiction: Hidden Places (2001), Candle in the Darkness (2002), Fire by Night (2003), A Proper Pursuit (2007), Until We Reach Home (2008), Though Waters Roar (2009) While We're Far Apart (2010), and Wonderland Creek (2011). She was inducted into the Christy Award Hall of Fame in 2013. Fire by Night was also one of only five inspirational fiction books chosen by Library Journal for their top picks of 2003, and All She Ever Wanted was chosen as one of the five inspirational top picks of 2005. Lynn's novel Hidden Places has been made into a movie for the Hallmark Channel, starring actress Shirley Jones. Ms Jones received a 2006 Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Aunt Batty in the film.

This is a sweet story of two moms teaching their kindergarteners the true meaning of Christmas. In the process, the adults learn some pretty amazing lessons themselves. Grief, betrayal, guilt, forgiveness. Throw in a dash or two of romance. Focus on the greatest Gift of all--Jesus. I agree with what another reviewer said about this making a nice Christmas movie.
These two women have suffered heartache as well. Through it all, they have remained best friends, encouraged each other and supported each other through thick and thin. Their boys keep looking at the Sears Christmas Wish Book, as usual for kids, wanting every toy they see. Together the moms come up with unique ways to teach the value and blessing of being givers to others in the community.
The hardest part for Audrey and Eve is being willing to open their own heart to romance. I didn’t realize when I started the book that the two characters are from the novel, If I Were You, which I haven’t read. I still enjoyed the book as it brings to the forefront that people can make a difference right where they live. I loved how the two moms worked together to teach their sons to look up from the wish book to see folks who they could bless in creative ways.
Lynn Austin did a superb job of showing how friends can support and encourage one another, as well as how faith can embolden people to step out of their comfort zone. Throughout the book, there are references to what each character experienced before their current living situation and season, which is revealed in If I Were You. Whether you read that book or not, I highly recommend reading The Wish Book Christmas and sharing with family and friends.
The Wish Book Christmas gives us a fresh perspective on giving and receiving. The story of the two young boys and how they pour over the Christmas catalog is so real. Makes me think of my childhood. Add to that the struggles of the time and the possibility of seeing the needs of those around us, opens the door to the true spirit of the season.
This is a sequel to If I Were You, another book written earlier by Lynn Austin. If you want to read the backstory to the lives of these young boys, then start there. You will pick right up in their story from the first book, but if you want to just focus on the holiday spirit then jump right into the The Wish Book Christmas. Either way, you can't go wrong. My heart is so much better prepared for the season of Christmas after having read this book. There is an art to giving and receiving, and this is a great reminder of all that encompasses.
