If there's anyone who's completely unfamiliar with the story (even though it has now gotten two film adaptions) here's the basic plot: a young boy (whose name we never learn, although in the first film he was called Luke) is recently orphaned and sent to live with his grandma. His granny tells him that witches are real, and, unlike in fairy tales and movies like "Wizard Of Oz", they do NOT wear black cloaks and hats or ride of flying broomsticks, but look like perfectly ordinary women. And this makes them all the more dangerous, because they HATE children and their goal in life is to exterminate as many kids as possible. The grandma also gives the boy some tips on how to spot a witch, for example witches always wear gloves to hide their clawed hands. Then one day they take a trip to a hotel. While there the boy sneaks off to play with his pet mice in an empty meeting room. While hiding behind a curtain the room suddenly fills with a large group of women who claim to be holding a meeting to help prevent cruelty to children. While in his hiding place the boy makes a horrifying discovery: the women are actually witches! And not only that, their leader the Grand High Witch is making a plan to not only kill children, but ALL the children in England! Her plot is to have her followers open up candy shops in every city and town in the country, then sprinkle in a formula that will turn the kids into mice, who will then be killed by their own parents and teachers not knowing the mice are their own children. The witches demonstrate this when a child who was given a chocolate bar by the Grand High Witch with just a drop of the potion enters the room, having been promised more chocolate. Soon after entering the potion takes effect and the kid turns into a mouse. The witches are about to leave, but then one smells out the boy who was hiding. They capture him and force him to drink an entire bottle of the potion, causing the transformation to occur instantly, and the boy is soon a mouse. After escaping, the two kids-turned-mice run back to the boy's hotel room and (thankfully still possessing the ability to speak) they tells his grandmother what happened. Now it's up to the two mouse children and the boy's grandma to save the children of England from the witches diabolical plot...but can they succeed?
If you enjoy fantasy adventure with just a touch of darkness, you should definitely give this a read. It does take a few minor liberties with Dahl's original story. (For example, in Dahl's book the two kids who get turned into mice were both boys, in this version it's a boy and a girl), but if that doesn't bother you too much, you'll have lots of fun.
