I am truly in love with this book. It was pure magic woven into words!
The dynamic between Zam, Lila the dragon, and Maks the human is fantastic. The banter is hilarious, especially when they begin to sling insults at each other!
In Witch's Reign, we have a wonderful underdog story that is fast-paced and full of action, and who doesn't love an underdog? Or in this case cat!
The story is rich with texture and language. You won't it to end!

"Just what in the sand dunes of hell was going on here?' is just one line I loved from this new book from Shannon Mayer! Witch's Reign (Desert Cursed Series, book 1) is keeper. The story revolves around the main character, a shifter named Zamira (aka Zam) who is asked not to retrieve a friend who was captured by the Ice Witch. Of course, she can't leave her bestie to a terrible fate so she heads out to rescue her. Along for the ride, is a human from her village.

The story takes the unlikely duo through the Dragon territory, and on to the winter lands of the Ice Witch. They have to work together to defeat many enemies, and survive the landscape they are thrust into. They also pick up a friend along the way.

This book is a must read as the humor is hysterical! Lots of one liners and fun and action packed scenarios. There are a lot of references to Shannon Mayer's other stories such as Venom Trilogy, Rylee series, and the Phoenix series. I loved finding these little references that were so craftily placed in the story. You don't need to have read any of her other books to enjoy this one though, so it's a good stand alone read as well.

So pick this book up. If you like action and adventure with a humorous side, this book will fit the bill!

I like this book, but unfortunately I can’t say more than that. Zamira is actually the only character I like in this whole book. Her best friend and her husband cheated on her. So I can’t like Darcy and I absolutely hate Steve. Her brother, Bryce, is a jerk. Lila left her and tried to go back to the dragons knowing that the dragons never cared about her and wanted to kill her. Ish seems to be evil. I don’t trust her. I almost like Maks, but I can’t even be sure that he isn’t just another liar in this whole story full of liars. Merlin also seems to be playing a game of his own, so I don’t think he is entirely trustworthy either. Plus, this book is full of foul words. I mean, she couldn’t stop swearing, so I wouldn’t want to share this book with my friends or my children. I am so annoyed by the ending (which was incredibly rushed and confusing) that I am not even sure that I want to read the next book. So I like it, but I can’t even say for sure if I liked it enough to read the next book. Sad.

Zamira “Reckless” Wilson, a lion shifter, orphan and cursed. Out of the desert pride of lions that she was once a part of she is one of the few that now remains. After returning to Ish, the woman who took her in and raised her, after a quest to recover a jewel that she needs Zamira is told some bad news. Her friend Darcy, who went out on a similar quest, has not returned. A note has been sent from the Ice Witch saying that she has Darcy and will be giving her to the Jinn. Zamira is floored by the news. She wants to go rescue her friend but Ish tells her that she will be being sent to the Dragon’s Ground instead. In an act of defiance Zamira goes to rescue her friend instead. She’s ordered by her brother to take the human, Maks, with her. She’s not pleased but the cat in her submits. She doesn’t think that he will survive the journey anyways. Along the way she rescues a young dragon; add a dangerous weapon and the scene is set for the story. The question is can Zamira survive the dragons, the guardians, goblins and Jinn that await her along this journey?
Witch’s Reign by Shannon Mayer is an epic fantasy adventure that will have you reading until the book is finished. Witch’s Reign is the first book in Shannon Mayer’s new Desert Cursed Series. This book is an epic triumph. Zamira, Zam to her friends, is a strong character with a sassy mouth that will have you turning the pages non-stop. I love the way that this story unfolds. The author loads us up with questions and surprises. It’s fantastic! Zamira is an underdog, because of her curses that ride her, but she is always there for the underdog as well. I love the various characters and how engaging they are. We are introduced to Zamira and those around her first. The story focuses on her and them, but then there are other characters that the story branches of to as well. I love this unexpected surprise when it comes up.
There is nothing that I dislike about this book. It’s professionally edited and the storyline flows beautifully. I love the character development and I like the flashbacks that the author gives us. They are in the perfect moments to give us information that we wanted and needed. The author keeps the reader engaged from start to finish.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I absolutely loved this book! I couldn’t put it down. I love the twists, the surprises and the amazing characters. This book does end on a cliffhanger, so be forewarned. It’s not a major cliffhanger but it is one that will have you literally craving the next book. I can’t wait to read it! If you are a fan of Shannon Mayer then you absolutely must read this book! You will not be disappointed!

Please learn to use the right pronouns

The world and story deserve 4.5 stars, but Ms. Mayer's inability to use the correct pronoun is distracting and becoming too common with modern writers, and it cost a star and a half. For example, when you're comparing, it's 'smaller than I (was),' not 'smaller than me (was).' Even if she doesn't get that, her editors should. I can live with errors in dialogue, if that's how you want your characters to speak, but I can't excuse it in narrative, even first person narrative. It's easy enough to get right: just finish the sentence with the parallel verb, and the right pronoun becomes incredibly obvious.

Enough with the soapbox. This is a good story, a strong protagonist, and an interesting if depressing world. I still recommend the book.

Great start to a new series. Dominated by female characters, it is the two smallest who it seems will save the day. First book introduced an interesting twist with what seems will be one of the main male lead characters, leading me to think that the series will continue to introduce these into each storyline. The other main male character is truly the worse kind of person that can be forced on a team; a liar, cheater, bully, and coward lacking any sense of loyalty and guided only by his desires and self importance. He is so negative having him as part of a scene is tiring. There are enough bad guys in the story that he is not really needed- find him a drag in the storyline.
Look forward to the next book to learn what other characters are not what they seem.

This story is full of of pace with twists & turns along with friendships made, broken & some heating up to possible romance in the future!!

I liked the female heroine, Zamira, she is fierce of heart though she lacks self belief due her differences from her family. She has an unrelenting need to help those who can't help themselves even if it's likely to cause her end!!!

I've only rated this book 3.5 stars as it feels like I was reading a book that was part way into a series. Things we're discussed, about her marriage for instance, that wasn't a part of this book. It left me feeling I'd missed out on a previous book 😟

Overall this was a fast paced & interesting tale that kept me turning the pages. It REALLY picked up once Lila came on the scene 👍

I will be controversial and honest. I did not fall in love or into this story in the same way I have with all Shannon's other books, that is until Lila was introduced. I love Lila. What a fabulous character. Zam, I grew to like and respect through the story, but I dont feel the same way about her or the instant connection as I did Nix and Rylee. She felt a bit whiny and sorry for herself at the start. Please bear in mind this is only my opinion. No hate mail please. Steve is something else!!!!! A well written character you hate from the get go. Kiara - what a wimp. Ish - hmm interesting.
That all said, I will be buying the next one and I am sure I will fall in love/hate more with all the characters. Shannon is a fabulous writer and I would encourage everyone to read the book and form their own opinions

Shannon has done it again though I never doubt her abilities to create a brilliant supernatural story and great strong badass heroines! I've learned that you are never too small for great things and never underestimate the smaller's absolute great abilities and strength! Loved Zam and Lila!
