Master spy, Nazi hunter—and werewolf on the prowl—in occupied Paris: A classic of dark fantasy from a Bram Stoker Award—winning author.
Allied Intelligence has been warned: A Nazi strategy designed to thwart the D-Day invasion is underway. A Russian émigré turned operative for the British Secret Service, Michael Gallatin has been brought out of retirement as a personal courier. His mission: Parachute into Nazi-occupied France, search out the informant under close watch by the Gestapo, and recover the vital information necessary to subvert the mysterious Nazi plan called Iron Fist.
Fearlessly devoted to the challenge, Gallatin is the one agent uniquely qualified to meet it—he’s a werewolf.
Now, as shifting as the shadows on the dangerous streets of Paris, a master spy is on the scent of unimaginable evil. But with the Normandy landings only hours away, it’s going to be a race against time. For Gallatin, caught in the dark heart of the Third Reich’s twisted death machine, there is only one way to succeed. He must unleash his own internal demons and redefine the meaning of the horror of war.
From the award-winning author of Swan Song and Boy’s Life, this is a “powerful novel [that] fuses WWII espionage thriller and dark fantasy. Richly detailed, intricately plotted, fast-paced historical suspense is enhanced by McCammon’s unique take on the werewolf myth” (Publishers Weekly).

You have Hitler and his blood thirsty minions and double agents spying for the British Secret Service. The French Underground everyone that you've read about or heard conversations about World War-2, boy howdy they are represented by this author.
This is the second book I've read by this author. The first was "The Mystery Walk" that was enjoyable and scary, mainly those of us who have family in the South have heard stories told by family who have witnessed these experiences. So I say don't be quick to say that things don't go bump in the night. Besides who knows what those Russian forest hide or what has lived there unknown for centuries. ENJOY he will not disappoint you!!
P.S. My next book to read is "River of Souls."
i love great writing, and while reading so many books in the paranormal/zombie/witch/werewolf/vampire genre, esp. at the prices i am willing to pay these days for ebooks, i seldom find really wonderful writing. here it is. i did buy it on a sale. i knew the writer from "swan song", a "the stand"-like, well written book that i read some time ago. i thought "the wolf hour" was even better. it's a long book that you wish could be longer, there's a complex main character that you wish to spend more time with, a fascinating backstory that is different than other werewolf books....you can't go wrong here.
it would make a great movie. if there are any producers out there who could option the book, then get a really good screen writer (maybe the authors?), and the funding for some really good cgi, i'd go see it. it's got all the elements of a blockbuster.
Much has been made of the books sex scenes which are I admit a little over the top but not nearly as over the top as the sex scenes written in Harris's Stackhouse novels. Or the god awful Wolf Gift written by Rice which has sex scenes in it that are borderline beastiality in nature.
The Nazi villains scheme (on a second reading this time around) did seem a little half baked but doesn't detract from the story but adds to the fun factor and thrills.
It is a shame that more Michael Gallatin books weren't published the character's huge potential has remained largely unrealized.

The action moves from the theatre of war: North Africa and Europe then back to Gallatin's upbringing in Russia. In this way the narrative keeps the reader hooked on his exciting and daring mission to find another agent with information vital to the Allied war effort whilst simultaneously informing the reader of the events and experiences that shaped him.
As the title suggests Gallatin is no ordinary individual, he is in fact a werewolf! This makes the novel interesting and original, what could have been a standard `boys own' war story is given a dark supernatural twist with a hero who uses his powers to assist him with his dangerous mission.
As the story unfolds it is clear that Gallatin will need all of his wits and years of experience to draw on as well as his abilities. There are also some colourful side-kicks to help him along the way as well as plenty of mysterious and alluring women.
The villains he finds himself up against are particularly nasty and include a sadistic game hunter, a high ranking officer and a scientist all sympathetic to the Nazi cause. With D-Day imminent and everything riding on the Allied invasion being a success Gallatin and his friends must foil the Nazi's sinister plans known only as `Iron Fist.'
This novel kept me hooked throughout and it works on both levels as a wartime thriller and horror story. McCammon has the same prose style as James Bond creator Ian Fleming so everything is given a vivid immediacy. It so easily could have entered the realms of farce but McCammon's execution and literary skill ensures that this is a first rate thriller with a nicely handled twist. I highly recommend adding this original thrill-fest to your Kindle collection.

Although the spy adventure is certainly entertaining, it's the story of how the young werewolf makes it all the way to England that I was more interested in learning about but that part isn't covered. I think it would have, for me anyway, made the more interesting read.
All in all, I found it an easy read; a light distraction and it certainly kept me turning the pages or tapping the screen, to be accurate. McCammon can certainly write action. I just can't help feeling he can write a bit more than that. In fact, having read 'Speaks the Nightbird' by the same author, I was a bit disappointed and feel, this is much weaker in terms of overall satisfaction. He seems to have gone for the comic book end of the adventure spectrum and hidden a better novel in the back plot.
Kindle copy good. If you like well written action sequences, you will enjoy it.

The sub-Bondian WW2 adventure was as boring as they come, replete with contractual sex scenes and cartoon bad guys who spill their guts rather than kill our hero.

A book that mixes reality with myth in a way you can almost believe is true. Two books in one before finishing with a brilliant climax. The descriptive writing even though gory at times is brilliant.
If you enjoy werewolf stories but with a reality check, you really shout read this book.
I wonder what this would be like if made into a film!
