Same man. New secrets. Oh, but that all too familiar tension...
We're stuck as frenemy neighbors for the next two months.
Facing a dilemma with bittersweet memories and flaming glances.
What's the harm in seeking a little closure?
Massive.
Can we even use words without risking an all out kissing war?

A former childhood friend but now a “damaged” adult, 27yo Weston McKnight welcomes home 23yo Rachel Simon or Shel in a most unusual way. Rachel hung out with West and her brother who were besties when they were kids. West was always very protective of her. When that protection takes a different turn, well, that’s the whole purpose of this story. Can they become more than friends?
The book is told in both points of view but you can definitely tell from the narrative which character is speaking. Ms. Snow does an excellent job of making her people unique on the page. There is LOTS of steam. You’ll need a fan in some scenes. There will be touching, poignant moments, funny moments, near-miss moments, painful moments, scary moments, aha! moments and beautiful moments. Wonderful and satisfying HEA. I’ll admit I cried at some events. I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book. LOVED it. Perfect cover too…
The main characters’ voices are too similar. Without chapter POV headings, it’s difficult to know who is talking. (Other than Weston cusses more and has horn-dog thoughts.)
Secondary characters lack consistent dimension, and their dialog is frequently flat and unnatural. There is a lot of laughter in response to non-funny exchanges or awkward speech tags that make the conversations seem dorky.
The profanity is excessive, and the “G-d you” comment is especially offensive as it is said casually and way out of context. The negative verbal comments are red flags for an unhealthy, verbally abusive relationship.
The first (very graphic) sex scene is disturbing in that the two have a decade of history, but they do an almost brutal quickie in an awkward place. The cave-man, alpha domination talk mixed with profanity is a turn-off coming from a guy who supposedly cares so much about Shel he avoided her for years in order to protect her.
The mystery story development is slow-moving and tedious, and after the initial sex scene, which has some great figurative language spoiled by crude dialog, I am not compelled to finish the book. The protagonists can have each other, their ill pig, and their antique collections. Hopefully they get some therapy and learn how to treat those they love with more respect; otherwise, their toxic relationship is doomed and is a poor example to emulate.
There are lots of comma errors and some other sentence construction errors that cause the reader to stumble.
ABOUT THE KNIGHTS OF DALLAS SERIES:
This is a Knights of Dallas book, a small-town romance set in Dallas, North Dakota. The books in the series are linked, but each book has great depth and detail such that there is nothing lost if they are read as standalones.
Dallas is home to harsh winters and unpredictable weather. It is home to a beloved old horse named Edison, a crazed rooster named Cornelius, a wise Tibetan Mastiff named Owl, and an aggressive goat named Hellboy. Recently, it became home to Bruce, a Bengal tiger. Here Hercules, an ornery pig, is introduced into the mix. Obviously, Dallas is home to animal lovers.
Dallas is a small town so many of its younger folks eventually move away. Left behind is a small but interesting elderly population with big personality and a world of history which helps to spin the webs of the stories in the series. Some characters return home after years away, and others are new to town. Strangers come and go, and not unlike Heart’s Edge, trouble has been finding its way into the sleepy town in recent years.
It all begins in Accidental Knight, book four of the Marriage Mistake series, in which Drake Larkin and Bella Reed are brought together in Dallas by her grandfather’s will.
In a spin-off series named The Knights of Dallas, The Romeo Arrangement follows in which Hollywood heartthrob Ridge Barnet meets Grace Sellers in the midst of a late March snowstorm that strands her in the tiny town.
Book two, Best Friend Zone, follows just over a year later. Drake and Ridge are both new fathers. It is Quinn Faulkner and Tory Coffey’s story. There is a little crossover with Still Not Love of the Enguard Protectors series, which is James Nobel’s story. James and Quinn once worked together.
Book three in the series, The Hero I Need, is Grady McKnight and Willow Macklin’s story. It is summer; Tory has her dance studio and is pregnant. Willow gets stranded in Dallas while on the run with Bruce, a Bengal tiger. Together Grady and Willow try to bring down a black market farm for exotic animals.
This is book four, The Worst Best Friend. It is Weston McKnight and Rachel Simon’s story. It opens in late September about one year later. After enlisting in the Army and breaking Rachel’s heart, Weston returned to Dallas a broken man. With the help of his Uncle Grady and Aunt Faye, he begins to put his life back together. Rachel Simon returns home to Dallas to help her Gram after surgery. It has been seven years since she last saw West, and she hopes maybe she can get some closure about the past before heading back to her new job at the Smithsonian.
Don’t forget to download the free bonus epilogue! It is a flash forward about four or so years later. The link is found at the end of the book.
Perhaps Rachel’s brother and Weston’s best friend, Marty, will get a story of his own!
IN THIS BOOK:
This book opens in late September, just over a year from the opening of book three.
Weston McKnight, twenty-seven, is not the same man he once was. When he left Dallas and joined the Army at the age of twenty, he hadn’t foreseen the carnage he would witness in Afghanistan. Seeing his brothers and sisters in arms die at his side in an ambush attack left him with headaches and nightmares, but the guilt of being the only one to walk away physically unscathed weighs him down even to this day. But the purpose had been served, and once he had gotten his discharge papers, he returned home to Dallas, North Dakota, where he now owned a house. His parents had sold him the family home when they decided to relocate to Arizona sometime after he had left for the military.
Weston earned a purple heart, but the price had been heavy. It wasn’t easy transitioning back into civilian life, but he was lucky to have the support of friends and family. His best friend from childhood, Marty Simon, was always a solid friend. Uncle Grady was by his side through good times and bad, and Weston was happy to have helped him and Willow in their time of need just last year. Grady helped Weston launch his towing and car repair business, for which he is eternally grateful. To show his gratitude, he continues to work a shift here and there at Grady’s place, the Purple Bobcat. Keeping busy has helped Weston calm his mind and tame the monster inside, but his workaholic lifestyle is nothing but a band-aid. His great aunt Faye has stood by him the entire time, ever helpful and never judgmental. When he isn’t busy working, growing his business, or helping his family, Weston tries to give back to the community to which he owes so much.
Rachel (Shelly) Simon, twenty-three, is returning to Dallas after a long absence. She had left to pursue her love of history, and an internship at the Smithsonian has kept her too busy to visit for the last couple of years. Her hard work earned her a prestigious job at the institution, and just eight weeks prior to starting her new position, Gram needs a hip replacement. Gram and her late grandfather had raised Marty and Rachel since they lost their parents when they were just sixteen and twelve years old, and nothing will keep Rachel from going home to help out during Gram’s recovery. Marty had stayed behind in Dallas to help Gram so that Rachel could follow her dreams, and she feels guilty for not doing more. Gram had converted their old home into Amelia’s B&B after Rachel left for college, so she decides to return and help run the inn during Gram’s recovery.
Returning home brings up all kinds of mixed emotions for Rachel. She feels guilty for leaving Marty to watch over Gram on his own, and for the personal sacrifices he has made while at the same time she has been selfish in her own pursuits. She feels homesick for her family and for Dallas, a home that she never really outgrew. D.C. may be exciting and drenched in history, but there is something about a small town that speaks to her. The sound of nature, the friendly faces, the slower lifestyle, and the very personal history that is deeply connected to the community – she misses it all. But the visit will without a doubt bring her face to face with West, who had returned to Dallas since her last visit.
West is Marty’s best friend, but he had been Shelly’s best friend growing up, too. She had been a tag along for her brother and his friend, but it was also so much more for her. Weston was kind when she was lost and uncertain following her parents’ death. He always knew how to put a smile on her face and to make the world a better place. She had secretly fallen in love with him when she first met him and dreamed of a future together. It devastated her when he suddenly announced he was enlisting. They made promises to one another, though, that gave her hope for the future. It wasn’t long after that when he ghosted her, though, leaving her heartbroken and bitter. Seeing him again after all these years might be unavoidable in a small town like Dallas, but Rachel hopes to at least get some answers so that she can return to D.C. with a sense of closure. Trouble makes another appearance in Dallas, and soon the couple is deeply embroiled in yet another small town crisis. The couple eventually finds a happy ending.
Don’t forget to download the free flash forward bonus epilogue via the link at the back of the book.
Wow! Weston and Rachel’s story is beautifully written with rich and vivid detail. Weston and Rachel’s connection is powerful and deeply felt. Their steamy chemistry heats up the pages, but there is so much more to their story than that. It is about family and small-town pride. It is about love of animals and following your dreams. It is about friendship and hardship. Loss and grief are experienced, but so are support and giving back. Veterans and the difficulty of returning home from war are covered as well. There is mystery and danger, which eventually pulls the whole gang together. Dallas is a living and breathing thing, and it never fails to be part of the story.
When a pig named Hercules brings Weston and Rachel together again, the sparks begin to fly. Although riddled with anger, their chemistry is as strong as ever. Their resentment for one another is deeply felt, but there is obviously something else behind it. For Rachel, there are a lot of hurt feelings buried deep inside. Self-doubt has held her back since West walked out of her life. West knows Shelly is trouble for him, and he wants her to follow through on her promise. He doesn’t have room for her in his life, and to submit to his feelings, even if just for the few weeks she is home, will only set them both up for more trouble. He tries to push her far away, but between Hercules and a guest named Carson, he cannot seem to keep his distance.
The two have a deep and emotional history together, but there are barriers that keep the couple separated. West has secrets that he prefers not to discuss. Were Rachel to discover his truths, she would understand that there is no future for the two of them together. Rachel trails West in years. With hindsight, she begins to see her past actions in a new light and recognize just how wrong she had been about some things. It gives her pause as she wonders how she can make some positive changes in her life.
Weston and Rachel’s best friend romance is a spectacular read that will have you both laughing and grabbing for a tissue. When the girl he secretly loved for years returns home, Weston’s heart and mind battle between what he wants and what he knows is best. Their story is action-packed with silly humor, danger, and a dose of steam in a small-town setting. Weston’s wonky sense of humor never fails, and there are several teary scenes that catch you by surprise. Hercules needs a special shout-out for always stealing the show. The story is beautifully written. My ARC copy has an occasional odd typo or error, but I assume they are addressed in the released copy. The plot is complex. There are many storylines taking place and a sense of mystery as a mini crimewave comes to Dallas. The characters are carefully crafted and very real in some respects. Some characters provide great comic relief. Fans will be pleased that other characters from the series are revisited here. The story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Weston and Rachel. I rate this book five full stars.
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
