Writing can be ponderous or beautiful. Tragic story with many truths that made the book worth reading but at times difficult to absorb.

5.0 out of 5 stars IMHO this is the best book in the Posleen War Series
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on March 30, 2007

Yellow Eyes by John Ringo and Tom Krautman (2007) is in the Posleen War Universe witch includes:

A Hymn Before Battle
Gust Font
When the Devil Dances
Hell's Faire
The Hero
Cally's War
Watch on the Rhine

Yellow Eyes

And Sister Time (forth coming)

Per the book"This being the tale of the defense of the Panama Canal by U.S. and Panamanian forces against landing and migrating Posleen." Actually it also includes the defense of all of South and Central America

In the interest of full-disclosure I need to tell you that I am an ex-Artillery officer, which John treats with the respect Artillery deserves.

"Artillery lends dignity to what would otherwise be an unruly mob."

I attended and graduated from the U.S. Army's Jungle War Fare School (JWS) in the Canal Zone. Even swam the Shagras River. Remind me to tell you about the soldier in the boat with the rifle, due to a hole in the shark net.

Some might argue that this should be read immediately after Hell's Faire, but what the hey, read them all. You'll enjoy it more. Besides John's kids could use the money in their college fund.

I highly recommend this book. Any body who has ever spit-shined a boot will enjoy this book. Who ever came up with the story of the caimen and the Posleen is a genius! I thought I was going to bust a gut I laughed so hard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fighting Posties in Central America

This compilation by Ringo and Kratman shows how an already excellent story line can be made even better. It's possible! The Posties target Central and South America. Will they do better than Norte Americana? The authors interweave a diverse amount of plotlines that all come together to make another page turner. If you've read The watch on the Rhine already, this is another excellent compilation. If not, what are you waiting for, read this and get to the European front. The Posties suffer the most. The authors almost make you sympathetic for the Posties, but the humans suffer just as much. Read how the Darhel work in the background to hamper the humans. Read about the trials and tribulations of all the characters, from the jungles to the mountains, and to the sea. It's a late night page turner or better yet, make it a weekend, lock the doors, hang the 'do not disturb' sign read-a-thon. ONE of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss out. Buy it now!

Of all the books in this series, this is my favorite. You'll see some of the best characters of the series begin here.

Honestly though, what got me was the setting and the people. They feel so damned real! I've never been to Panama, but I lived in the Philippines for a few years. The Philippines are a lot more Latin than they are Asian, and with the shared history of both Spanish and American influence the similarities between the Panama in the book and the Philippines that I know just clicked for me. Damned good book, I bought it 2 months ago and I've already read it twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most likable alien invader of Earth in literature

I am a woman who loves military science fiction and really enjoyed this book when I read it several years ago. I found out that a friend of several years had the same tastes which she had never admitted to anyone. I bought this as a gift for her. The most memorable characters are an intelligent ship whose avatar is a very sexy lady, and a Posleen godking who has the worst possible experiences in the jungles of Panama, It speaks well of John Ringo's writing that he makes the 'enemy' so likable. For those who have not read other books in the series the Posleen are omnivore invaders of Earth who think humans make a great main dish.

(Hint to writers and publishers women may be an unrecognized market.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Do not skip this one, possibly the best in the series

One of the better books in the series, this introduces a new suite of characters and takes the time to properly introduce them, and make you care about them a lot. Some of the new characters are extremely creative, but don't want to spoil it for you!

Overall, if you're reading through the series, do not skip this one!

I found this extremely refreshing - the locations, characters, scenarios and battles are just fantastic in this book. Lots is new here and it breathed life back into this for me. Possibly my fav in the series.

Military science fiction at it's finest. I am always amazed by Kratman's ability to create believable characters and highly intricate plots. His knowledge of military affairs is encyclopedic. If you like SF, you will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great installment

Ringo and Kratman strike again with yet another installment in the Posleen War series. If you've read the previous books you pretty much know what's going to happen. Much like 'Watch on the Rhine', this story takes place during the same time period as Ringo's earlier books in the series. You already know the outcome, but the authors still manage to create an engaging story with characters you care about. The action is outstanding and the comedy interspersed throughout the novel maintain a satisfying balance. Definitely a good read if you're into military science fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cultural cross-view makes for a great read

I'd been getting a little tired of endless Posleen waves acting like Posleen (though not too badly) until this gem came along in this generally excellent series. (Cally's war seems not to have been repeated, at least!) Things seemed to being starting samo samo, then back plot actions with the "Mad" PDA came into focus along with the native Panamanian defense force leadership, and this one turned into a page turner.

I'm not sure I can rank this as the best of the series, but it's definitely in the top four.
