Zachareth, Baron of Carthridge, is a driven, ruthless and obsessive man – a man who could be a hero, but he wants so much more. Having watched his father fall under the sway of a sorceress, Zachareth grows up craving knowledge and power. When his tutor at Greyhaven introduces him to forbidden magics, Zachareth discovers there is more to power than meets the eye. As he returns home to a barony on the verge of rebellion and beset by necromantic foes, Zachareth must choose his true path – the path of virtue and heroism, or that of darkness and villany; the line between the two is finer than most imagine.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Deeply emotional and shows that a good writer can make a familiar and well-trod genre fresh and invigorating. Solid ?????” ― – Big Geordie Geek, on The Doom of Fallowhearth
"It's clear that MacNiven knows his stuff, and the fights feel like they leap off the page and are wonderfully clear and easy to follow. He gives plenty of detail, enough that you can clearly picture everything that's happening, and you'll soon find yourself getting swept up by the grandeur of it." -- Trans-Scribe

About the author

Robbie MacNiven is an author and freelance journalist living in the Highlands of Scotland and currently enrolled as a student at the University of Edinburgh, studying History. His ambition is to become an author in much the same way that a 5 year old, when asked what he wants to be when he grows up, will say “a fireman” or “an astronaut.” He takes thin but wholesome comfort from the fact that the world will always need authors just as it will always need firemen and (presumably) astronauts.
In between studying (at worst only a passing discomfort) and writing Robbie follows politics, football, gaming and stalks magazines and newspapers online to see if they have a “submit” button. A number of his short fiction works can be found on Amazon, and his non-fiction in such publications as Retrospect, Skirmish and Military History Monthly. Should his writing career almost invariably fail he intends to flee to North America, buy himself a musket and a red coat, and join a re-enacting group. He generally prefers cats to dogs, and is 23 years old.
