Active and Adaptive. Both acronyms are ANC. Be careful you’re buying which ANC you really want.

Bose is the most likely ACTIVE Noise canceling (ANC) headphone you’ve heard of. With usually 1 or 2 external microphones, it notes “droning noises” ; constant low freq noise like jet engine, road noise while driving, etc. It then regenerates that same droning noise but it’s shifted 180 degrees out—the opposite noise basically—which in effect cancels the droning noise. ACTIVE noise canceling WILL NOT block short bursts of noise, for example breaking glass, loud people’s voices or gunshots Etc. You get the idea.

ADAPTIVE noise canceling (also ANC) typically uses more mics, and with some magic digital processing TRIES to block out these sharper, short duration noises.

The headphone in this case is a Hybrid of both types of ANC. Try to read the description well before you buy. see less

Whether Noise-cancelling headphones or noise-canceling headphones that reduce unwanted ambient sounds using active noise control. What's more, Noise cancellation makes it possible to listen to audio content without raising the volume excessively. It can also help a passenger sleep well in a noisy vehicle such as an airliner.Good for air travel!
