My understanding is that knee supports and braces are a bad idea because they allow the muscles to weaken in the long run. Is this not true?

Depends. If youre arthritic or such, and these help you walk, you come out ahead. Being stuck on the sofa allows muscles to weaken too.
If you're looking at these to begin with, you probably have knee troubles and need something. Keeping yourself moving is important, the part about braces and weakness is about elite athletes more than aging boomers. Youll be fine.

in my experience I wear them to help heal the knee. It does not weaken the knee.
It helps heal and hold down the pain associated with injury or age.

I could not walk if not for the braces. My arthritis is bone on bone and my specialist told me to wear them in order to exercise my knees. I am no doctor but they enable me to walk.

Sorry but I have no idea. I bought them for a little extra support when I workout cause I could feel my knee giving out when I moved it a certain way. I like the way they fit and feel and they help so I’m happy
