We carried it to the gate and then had it checked to our next destination. We didn't want it to go on the belts through the airport. However, you can check it at the checkin counter if you don't want the extra piece of luggage.

Yes, we folded up the car seat and placed that in the bag first, then added the angle adjuster for rear-facing last. We placed the angle adjuster in-between the side headrest.

Yes it does, that's what it's made for. It is very sturdy. Even as a back pack it is very very heavy which makes this useful because there is no way I would be able to carry baby & car seat.
