My wife an I have been using ours in our MacBook Pro's for about a year with no issues. I have a mid 2012 15in and she had an early 2009 and now has a mid 2012 13in both non-retina of course. In short no. It can if you buy a USB 2.5" hard drive enclosure and put the hard drive in it. You could instead purchase a USB hard drive, that has a lot more space, for the same or less.

You can download the cloning software from Transcend official website. The SSD comes with a very user friendly manual, and you can clone your OS disk step-by-step with the manual.
The software is only for Transcend product, you cannot clone other SSD by the software.
