I measured twice. Not quite if stacked. It's about 2 3/4". But will id one basket is not on top, as with my configuration.

Well, they came with slip on covers for the feet so they won't scratch your desk, but the baskets basically just rest on the base and they have little pegs so they don't slide off.

I only use it for papers but I have a big stack of them. Probably more than 10 lbs

This is designed for letter sized paper, however, legal paper could be stored in it but this organizer would not support the full length of anything that was legal sized...there would be some paper droop off of the open edge.

Not sure, once I received mine the quality was not there! I wouldn't waste my hard earn money on this item. Not made for daily desk use.

Yes, but fold flaps in so that they don't hang over. Because the tray widens slightly as it rises, the envelopes will be a little tight on the bottom, but a few sheets of 8.5 x 11 paper as a cushion will help you reach the wider part.
