I run ultramarathons and we were required to bring a water filter on course so we could refill from streams. I liked the idea of just having a bottle I could stash and put into my vest pocket and be able to fill up and go. The 1.0L bottle ended up being way too big but what I LOVED about this product is that I was able to use the top with other soft flasks, so I just switched out the flask with one of my smaller ones. Super convenient to be able to do that! The filter was easy to clean and there were no issues drinking out of the top.

Great for making sure your water is clean

Awesome for camping

I bought this item for my nephew for his camping trip and he raves about the straw and how amazing it is

Great for camping and overseas trip

This is a great product and works as advertised. I purchased this bottle for my kids to use in Cambodia for two weeks. My kids are healthy and no sign of parasites or microorganisms from the unfiltered water.

Do you need to boil the water before filtering it? We are travelling to third world or camping and using creek water

Thanks for asking. No boiling water, the filter will do its job. You can drink from the river.

Great for camping or trips to developing nations

My husband purchased one for me which I took to India, and had no problems on a three week trip. Very convenient to refill, and much less expensive than buying water bottles!

High altitude pressurizes them

Great for hiking and camping use

Great for Wilderness Kayaking

This filtration system was absolutely perfect for kayaking wilderness camping in the Sylvania Wilderness Area. We gathered water when out kayaking then hung it in a tree at our camp. The rate of filtration was fine - camping is a slow-paced activity anyway so it was perfect!…

Awesome sauce

Can't wait to go camping with this...…

Works well

Exelent product just set up camp next to a stream, fill the scrotum with water and hang it in a tree

Off Brand is Better

My dad let me borrow his water filter (don't remember the brand) for camping quite a few times and it worked great.…

So Easy

…You scoop up that cold mountain stream water, hang it up in a tree and go set up camp while gravity does the work for you.…

Game changer for hiking!!!

Took this bad boy camping at Baker Lake in Washington.…

Perfect!

Very easy to use and perfect for hiking, camping or back packing.…

Perfect for camping

It fit my already owned water bottles fine. It's easy to use and convenient. It does take a little bit of force to suck but once the filter is completely wet, its much easier. I did have a little bit of issues making sure the straw and cap stayed connected at first, but once I twisted it enough, it stayed just fine.

Great product!

My boyfriend and I go hiking, camping, and rock hopping and this came in super handy when we were rock hoppping/camping!…

Pure water on the go

Got this for off grid camping.…

Fits well and is very durable.

…Probably didn't NEED it, but we'll use it when camping anyway so I figured why not?…

Great for camping

…We use camping so we don’t have to carry water.

Seems like it should do the job.

…Sadly on that day the few left will be on a permanent camping holiday, without the holiday part. So I have added this filter kit to my camping supply box.…

Water Filter

Great for camping and emergency preparedness.

Five Stars

Good product, seems well designed, my daughter cannot wait to go camping to use.

GREAT PRODUCT

Perfect for multi day hikes and camping trips - I carry this in my big pack.

How thoroughly do I need to clean the filters while out on a trip, say for a week? The instructions state to clean after each use.

If you can't get clean water during the trip, unless you pump and fill something to then turn around and clean it in, I clean it when I return from my trip. I interpret "each use" to mean: I take it and camp/hike and come back. I see what you mean about every time you pump and fill something as being a "use". Haven't had any issues with having to wait until I can clean it in a kitchen. I just let it dry during camping trips to avoid potential mold growing.

Does it have battery

The device is hand operated and gravity type hosing. No batteries. However, I do suggest purchasing the extra Inlet/outlet/ interior replaceable filters to double the amount of water available! Great purchase for anyone who camps or just wants to make sure you have clean water to drink!

Don't go camping without this filtration system

Excellent filtration system. During a recent backcountry trip we ran out of water. All streams were dry. Finally my son found a water pool wr could use. We filtered 3 liters of water in no time, and no one got sick.…

A must for camping and backpacking or emergency kits!

Haven't used it. But my husband is impressed. he checked out quite a few different brands. I keep it with my emergency supplies in a crate. My grown daughter teases me and says the crate is for the Zombie Apocalypse. It's an especially nice addition as we are near a river and have a pond right outside our property.…

A necessity for boating, camping, Hunting and back country travel.

Have not had a chance to use it yet. I am confident from the reviews and published lab testing that it will work as advertised and become an indispensable part of our safety requirements. Add On: 10/03/17 Finally had the opportunity to use this product this past weekend. Worked as advertised and produced excellent tasting water.

What is the difference between this one and the $35 one???

Well, I can’t answer that because I am not sure which specific one you are referring to? The specs for each product should be posted. I am very happy with this one, to the point that I bought a second because we usually camp/hike in a group of 4-6 people and it just saves time.

0.01 micron?! Is this legit? Are those who have purchased these still happy with them?

It is legit. I backpack with 3 other people who all have their own systems. 2 have Sawyer systems and the other with the 3L Platypus gravity system. The Playpus system is great for camp with the blaster for plenty of water. The Sawyer systems especially the squeeze one is fast. But the entire group agrees that the best tasting and clearest water comes from the Survivor PRO system. I have never had any tannins from river, creek, stream, lake water visible after filtering with this filter. Whereas my companions have water that looks like tea (still drinkable and filtered) in their bottles/blatters while my bottles are crystal clear water. I've done 2 through hikes with this system and it has performed above expectations. Pro tip. Keep pump on ground when pumping, your reservoir will fill much faster than holding the unit in your hand. Happy hiking.

May be the most important item in your pack!

Perfect for hiking/camping or even if your tap need filtering.…

Love these bottles!

In spending a lot of time day hiking, mountain biking, camping and in the backcountry we have found these to be one of our indispensable go to items.…

AGR
If I am doing solo camping so maybe need to filter 3L per night, can I use this instead of much heavier pump?

As long as you leave the time to do so and have a good water source it shouldn't be a problem. Keep in mind the recommended number of liters the filter will "purify" is limited but camping means you should be able to clean filter easily as needed and it should last you multiple camping trips

Best filer on the market

…I also usually will chug a 3rd liter at the water source AKA Camel up, and if I knew I was going to be dry camping that night, I would fill the BeFree 1L bladder with an extra liter, so I would have extra water for cooking and in the AM.…

Water is a perpetual need -- thirst is a life-sustaining constant. Unfortunately, access to clean, potable water is not, nor is electricity. That's what makes gravity water filters so valuable. The force of gravity, like the need for hydration, is a constant wherever you go. So, as long as you have a gravity water filter on hand, you can get safe and drinkable water. All you need is a freshwater source (rivers, streams, etc.). This is because this type of water filter doesn't desalinate, meaning you can't use seawater. That said, provided you choose a good quality filter, you can be safe against everything from coliforms to parasites. To help you in this pursuit, we've listed the best gravity water filters available. Let's take a look.
The last thing you want to do after a long day on the trail is squat over a creek to filter your water and pump seemingly forever. Gravity filtration systems take the work out of water filtration. They’re as simple as they sound. Just fill a reservoir with unfiltered water, hang it from a tree, your pack, or even just hold it, and let gravity do the work. These filtration systems are ideal for basecamps but can be a hassle getting water on the trail as they aren’t as fast as hand-pumped systems. Most of the filters on our list make up for this by having the inline capability, so you can attach to your hydration bladder for filtering on the go. Take a look at our top picks below.
Whether you are hiking in the remote backcountry or traveling abroad, having access to clean drinking water is essential. Packing a portable water filtration system is one of the best ways to protect yourself from contaminants like bacteria, viruses and heavy metals to ensure you always have refreshing, safe water on hand.
If you're planning a backpacking trip, you need a reliable water filter. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things to keep in mind while hiking, and you may not have access to fresh water on your route. While you could take a chance and drink water straight from the river, that may be unwise. Instead, here are the best backpacking water filters you should consider to filter out any contaminants.
